W hen elementary students re-turn to school this month,

many of them — especially those from low income families — will be starting with achievement levels lower than where they were at the beginning of the summer break.

Over the summer, the flow of re-sources slows to a trickle for stu-dents from disadvantaged back-grounds. Their more affluent peers continue to have access to financial and human capital, such as travel and parental involvement, which enables them to continue to learn. If quality education is a child’s ticket out of a life of poverty, too many are being left behind at the station.

That’s why the Lafayette Urban Ministry has been so committed to our 5th Quarter Summer Learning Retention Program.

The LUM 5th Quarter staff members have 50 children for five days a week, up to 12 hours a day. The LUM teachers and program director work hard to keep the students en-gaged in fun, experiential learning all day long. Each day begins with a nutritious snack, recreational read-ing, fun gathering sessions, followed by learning groups.

This year there were fre-quent on-site sessions from groups like Purdue Extension & College of Education, and field trips to the public library, Pur-due University and other locations where our stu-dents learn and experi-ence new things.

LUM 5th Quarter is a quality program which

gets consistent positive feedback from the students and their parents.

Please, won’t you consider invest-ing in 5th Quarter? Your support will help LUM to continue to offer this remarkable program that has proven so effective in reversing the summer learning slide for vulnerable children. Give a child a ticket to a brighter future.

Summertime — Fun, Travel & Reflection Summer is in full swing, and many of us are enjoying trav-el and fun outdoors with our family & friends. Summer-time can also be a time for reflection and planning. You too may spend some time this summer planning for the future and reflecting how you may assist those less fortunate. Per-haps you could create a personal legacy by continuing your support of the mission of Lafayette Urban Minis-try beyond your own lifetime. Through Planned Giv-ing your support of our ministry will continue for all perpe-tuity.

In addition to the altruistic benefits, your charitable gift to Lafayette Urban Ministry brings tax relief — and also allows you to make a larger gift to LUM than you could

make from your income alone. Whether you use cash, appreciated securities/stock, real estate, artwork, partnership interests, personal property, life insurance or a retirement plan, the benefits can make it attr active to you as a well as LUM. We also hope you will remember Lafayette Urban Ministry in your will.

First, meet with your professional advisor. When you are ready to begin the conversation, please email or call Joe Micon, LUM executive director , who is eager to meet with you ([email protected] | 765-423-2691). Wednesday night at LUM Camp is our traditional Board Night.

On August 1, our LUM friends & board members traveled in the LUM bus out to Hanging Rock Assembly Camp in Warren County to experience an evening at LUM Camp.

When our LUM friends & board members arrived they met the campers and sang camp songs. They were then treated to an authentic camp supper followed by an ice cream social — ice cream sundaes with all the fixin’s. Our guests scooped and served the ice cream to our campers which encouraged even more interaction.

LUM Camp is an overnight summer camp for 85 boys and girls (8, 9 and 10 years old), who come from families served by the Lafayette Urban Ministry. Our camp includes all the traditional activities that a great camp should have like morning chapel, horseback riding, swimming, hiking, boating, arts & crafts, campfires, corn maze, zip-line and an outstanding staff of camp counselors.

Along with all of these activities, LUM Camp focuses on interactive and experiential learning. Our theme was Let Your Light Shine. Throughout camp, our campers spent much of the week learning about wonder & science of light. Over 25 scientists and educators from Purdue and

the community engaged each child’s natural curiosity with loads of hands-on activities and projects. LUM Campers learned about the Indiana State insect, the firefly, and were treated to an awesome fireworks display, made possible due to a grant from the Riley Children’s Foundation. The highlight of Board Night for the campers, as well as our guests, was the laser light show. You could tell that our visitors enjoyed returning to their childhood for a few hours and our campers enjoyed having them visit them at camp.

Thank you to everyone who helped make LUM Camp 2018 possible. Through your donations, campership gifts, and volunteer time, you have once again made it possible for our LUM Campers to have a positive, life-changing experience that they will remember fondly for the rest of their lives.

If you wish to make a donation to LUM Camp, go to lumserve.org/donate.

54th Annual — LUM Camp 2018 — Going Strong

2 The SEED—August 2018

Lafayette Urban Ministry relies on donations from individuals, businesses and organizations to offer programs & services that strengthen families & children in our community. LUM has recently been blessed with five special gifts. Special thanks to the following:

The Riley Children’s Foundation donated $5,000 to LUM Camp to be used on programs that focus on the wonder & science of light — including a chapter book for each of the campers. {Pictured to the right: Stephen Pennell, Riley Children’s Foundation representative; Joe Micon, LUM; Susan Miles & Kelly Coleman, Riley representatives.}

An individual who wishes to remain anonymous recently donated $42,000 to scholarships for the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program to be distr ibuted in the next five years and $21,000 to the LUM After School Program.

A local couple who wishes to remain anonymous gave $15,000 to support LUM programs.

The Catholic Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana donated $5,038 to the LUM Immigration Clinic to contract a Spanish interpreter.

Seven downtown churches participated in Worship in the Streets — and the sponsoring churches donated $318 to LUM. The participating churches were Bethel AME Church, Brown Street United Methodist Church, Congress Street United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church, First Christian Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church & Trinity United Methodist Church.

LUM relies on talented volunteers like Pat & Adelia.

Patricia (pictured above left) and her husband, Floyd, grew up in Battle Ground, Indiana, where they raised their family and eventually moved to West Lafayette. Pat earned a BS in Sociology and an MS in Counseling & Per-sonnel Services, both from Purdue University.

She and Floyd are members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and have three grown children (all who have earned at least one degree from Purdue) and four grand-children. She retired as the Senior Executive Associate Director for the Center for Career Opportunities at Purdue.

At LUM, Pat has been volunteering with the Good Samar-itan Program for over six years — and was one of the founding volunteers of the Immigration Clinic when it was established in 2014. She still occasionally teaches Citizenship Classes but regularly volunteers, one morning a week, meeting clients who need emergency financial assistance.

Adelia grew up in Oakwood, Ohio. She and her husband, Dennis now live in West Lafayette. Adelia earned her BA in Psychology with a comprehensive in language from Manchester University as well as two Master's degrees in Child Development and Counseling both from Purdue University. {Pictured above: Adelia & Luis Urbano.}

Adelia retired as a Purdue Krannert School of Manage-ment academic advisor. Dennis, who is a past president of the LUM Board of Directors, is retired as the Director of Academic Research & Services and K-12 Outreach for the Purdue College of Science. Adelia & Dennis are active members of St. John's Episcopal Church and have three grown children, all of whom graduated from Purdue, and eight grandchildren, two who are currently enrolled at Purdue.

With the LUM Immigration Clinic, Adelia volunteers weekly and has been willing to assist in any task big or small. Recently she assisted a client, Luis Urbano, in pre-paring for his citizenship test. Luis attended a series of LUM Citizenship Classes but needed more one-on-one tutoring. Adelia and Luis met often and worked diligently. In July 2018, Luis became a US Citizen, and Adelia shared that she was humbled to be a part of his journey.
