DFC MISSION STATEMENT

Most of my fishing is done by reading books....

Bob McKeon, DFC Newsletter Editor, Graphic Guru, Head Wrangler of Stuff, Stay at Home Fly Fisherman and Certified Lawn Tosser of Rods an' things. Questions/Comments? Catch me at: [email protected]

I found something different to do while running an idea for a newsletter ar-ticle in the attic of my mind...As I was moving some of the lumber I thought of of our DFC Trout Bum buddy...Larry Allen, as he for weeks on end, practiced his casting skills to great extent and compassion to take in the 108th Ameri-can Casting Associations (ACA) Annual Tournament. The event was being held in Lexington, Kentucky July 25-30, 2016. There are 14 events spread over this past week, along with practice rounds, awards each day, a collection of fishing items to be auctioned on the 29th and the Annual Banquet scheduled for Saturday, July 30th. I had the good fortune to hang with Larry a few times as he got me hooked on casting tournament style with rod, spinning reels, bait casting reels and casting plugs. I thought if I could pull it off I’d make room in the newsletter and follow Larry at the ACA this past week. Through some correspondence via an e-mail, I became acquainted with Pat-rick McFadden, ACA Treasurer and a board member of the Blue Grass Sports-men’s League (Casting Division) in Lexington, the host for the 108th ACA Tourney. I asked Mr. McFadden, if he would be kind enough to possibly send me daily results of the tournament of Larry Allen’s day with rod, plug and fly. I found Mr. McFadden has the highest respect for our Trout Bum buddy, Larry, and both are great friends. So each night I’ve gotten an e-mail with the daily results of Larry’s day. This has been fun partly because of the contact I devel-oped with Mr. McFadden. As I received the results each night from the ACA tourney, I can’t help but re-alize what gifted individuals there are in this sport working with rod in hand. Our results herein this DFC Newsletter reflects only that of the Men’s Division where you’ll see many names that have contributed to the continued success of tournament casting- including Larry Allen and my contact, Pat McFadden (...many thanx, Pat!), for the daily casting events. As much as I concentrated on just the Men’s Division, there are equal divisions for women and seniors, along with a much talented and popular individual in the Junior Division, plus an Intermediate Division as well. After looking at the seniors events I thought...yeah, maybe I can see myself doing that! There’s hope...and I’ve had fun with what Larry’s worked on with me. Thanx, Larry, we’ve had fun looking over your shoulder, so to speak of, and look forward to a chat with you at a club meeting sometime. You gained a life time of memories in Kentucky...we’d like to hear more of your experiences at events like this. And, of course look forward to hangin’ with you during one of your Rio Salado Casting Club Meet-Ups in the late Fall.

Come along and find the ACA events and how Larry Allen did on pages 7, 8 ,9 & 12

Don’t forget we have our annual club swap meet this month. Wednesday, August 10, 2016- Doors open at 7:00 PM....The swap meet will be held at our normal meeting location, the Chandler Elks Lodge, but the format will differ from our typical meetings. Members are encouraged to bring their gently used equipment to sell or trade to others. We do ask that items be limited to fly fishing, camping or hiking only. Retail sales are prohibited. However, handcrafted items are welcome. All tables will be provided. This event is a great opportu-nity for new members to pick-up serviceable items at reasonable prices. In addition to the swap meet, we’ll have demonstrations on knot tying, fly tying, rod

building, etc. As per usual, dinner, drinks and mingling will also be available. This is a fun event and I look forward to seeing everyone there. Until next time, enjoy your time outdoors—it’s truly special.Cheers, Gentry SmithPS: If you’d like to submit your fish picture(s) for inclusion in the club’s monthly fishing report, please submit them (along with a brief description) to my email, [email protected]

Life for me was simpler

back in the late 40's as

you can see back then

everything was in black

did really fish in those

days! This is a pi

of my little brother,

Scott. And if I think

back then- it was his

turn to hold the fish for

a picture my dad took.

We had 31 pearch on that

the Grand Haven pier in

Lake Michigan with cane

poles an' bobbers

My brother and I fished

with 2 of the greatest

fisherman in the world

during those early years

of (B&W) baggy jeans,

Yup...my dad and

grandfather were the

greatest fishermen in our

world back then.

Desert Fly Casters

Fly Fishing TipsFor BeginnersBy Pearl O. Wisdum

Casting at Night...Casting a trout fly on a black night can pose prob-lems. One solution lies in marking your flyline so you know the exact distance past the tiptop of the rod. Take the measurements in the daytime, and then either make a nail knot with monofilament around the flyline at the precise spot, or wrap it with dental floss. When your fingers feel this projection, you know you’re ready to make the cast.

Bright Water Angling...When stream fishing, look for what I call “dancing dia-monds” -the small, bobbing wavelets that appear (when the light is right) where fast water meets slow. I have caught some bog trout in these turbulent spots. Food being swept along by a swift current settles to the bottom when it meets slower water. Practically all fish have to do is lie under these patches with their mouths open, making these spots prime locations for large lazy trout. If the dancing diamonds are over shallow water, you will do better on overcast days, early and late in the day, and at night. IIf they are over deeper water, fish may hold there at any time.

SUMMER FUN AT THE LOWER SALT RIVER Vince DeadmondThis years August Lower Salt River event is scheduled for Saturday, August, 13 at 6:00 AM. Assemble your gear before you arrive. We are fishing early to avoid the heat and the tuber traffic that usually starts around 9-10AM. We will park and meet at the Blue Point Bridge Pebble Beach area. Those of you driving from Mesa will take the Bush Highway until you cross the Blue Point bridge turn right and you will be at the Pebble Beach area. If you are coming from Phoenix or Fountain Hills off of Highway 87 you will need to turn left off the Bush Highway before you cross the Blue Point Bridge. The Lower Salt River is one of those close to home destinations that sometimes gets overlooked. The Lower Salt River is a good place to practice your moving water techniques. Many times I’ll set up the same as fishing at Lee’s Ferry. I’ll use a 4 or 5 weight rod, a floating line with a strike indicator one or two BB shots with two nymphs under it. Favorite flies Gold Ribbed Hares Ear, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Prince Nymph, and the San Juan Worm. Without the strike indicator I may fish by stripping Wooly Buggars, or Clouser Minnows, and I have had fun with small poppers. Sometimes I’ll try out my sink tip lines. This time of year I usually wet wade in swim trunks and wear water shoes like Tevas The rocks are usually algae covered and very slick, a wading stick can be helpful. Sun block, fishing shirt with big pockets, polarized sun glasses, a hat and plenty of drinking water should round out your gear. Don’t for-get your Tonto Pass for parking. The Lower Salt gives you the opportunity to catch Trout, Large Mouth Bass, Chub, Carp, Crappie, Yellow Bass, Sucker, Cat Fish, and Bluegill. My idea for this outing is to partner up. When we meet at the ramada we can match people who have fished the Lower Salt with people who have had limited fishing opportunities. There is a lot of water to fish so we can spread out and have good spacing between us. NOTE: I would like to fish until 9:00 AM, then take a break at the picnic area with breakfast burros, cof-fee, and continue with fly fishing discussions and plans.

DFC OUTING: AUGUST•2016

Beginning Fly Tying classes starting in August...It is time for another beginning tying class. We hold a class at least once a year – more often if there is enough interest. The dates for the next class are Tuesday and Thursday nights of August 16th through the 25th from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm. The Location: is Redden Construction Office locat-ed at 4131 E. Wood Street and nearest cross streets are 40th street and Broadway Phoenix. The class is structured to teach the basics of fly tying that allow you to tie almost any fly you find in a book or magazine (well maybe not Atlantic Salmon flies). We will cover tools, materials and tying methods. You will tie 8 different patterns starting with the Wooly bugger and ending with Elk Hair Caddis and Adams with a variety of nymphs in between. COST: There is no cost to members. For non-members $35 will get you into the class and membership for 2016.

Please note, there will be a deposit to borrow equipment. You can bring your tools or the club will check a set out to you for the duration of the class. Please sign up at the meeting or call to get on the list. This allows us make sure to have enough copies of hand-outs and tools. The club will provide material for flies tied during the class. Bring your equipment or the club will check a set out to use and take home during the class. Best of all it is free to members. For those interested, sign-up at the meeting or contact Tom at 602.768.7280. I look forward to the 4 classes and the joy that beginning fly tying brings to those who catch their first fish on a fly that they have tied. Tom Horvath

Arizona Game and Fish Department Aquatics Chief Chris Cantrell gave a great presentation on the Departments Plans for Coldwater Fishing throughout the state, with a full rundown on the various categories under which trout management and stockings are conducted. Those categories range from Intensive managed with frequent stockings to support put and take fishing, all the way up to Quality Waters like Canyon creek and to Blue Ribbon Waters like Lees Ferry and Becker Lake. All are managed with particular care to the needs of angling on that water. All of the plans

will appear on-line on the Department’s Web- Site in early August with a request for Public comments and feedback. Chris also gave a brief summary of proposed Regulation changes, and highlighted those for the Lees Ferry Rainbow Trout Fishery to reduce the harvest and extend the lower walk in boundary and for the Frye Reservoir Gila Trout Fishery to minimize harvest of those fish. The DFC Board has voted to support those changes and will send a letter expressing that support to the Arizona Game and Fish Commission before they consider the proposal.

The 4 FRI Rim Country EIS Scoping Comments Period is underway (See DFC July Newsletter for detailed Report). This EIS covers some 1.24 Million Acres across the Mogollon Rim, with many of our favorite streams slated for Stream Habitat Restoration to support their resident fish and aquatic species. The DFC Board has voted to submit comments during this scoping period, and those supportive comments urging the US Forest Service to help improve our fisheries and the valuable waters we have in the Rim Country are now being drafted and will be reported to the DFC members.

Comments on this Proposed Action should be submitted by August 11. Information also found here: www.fs.usda.gov/goto/4FRIRimCountry Written comments accepted at Four Forest Restoration Initiative1824 S. Thompson St, Flagstaff, AZ 86001Fax to 928-527-3620Email to [email protected].

Let’s go Carp'n. If you are looking for a fly fishing carp adventure close to home you probably have a canal in your neighborhood. The very thing that allowed Phoenix to flourish, is controlled water. Diverted and controlled water in canals was first practiced by the Hohokam Indians, later by the pioneers, and more recently by business and government. When you look at a map of the greater Phoenix area you will be amazed at the many miles of canals in every part of the valley. I would like to share with you one centrally located carp destina-tion. Kiwanis Park in Tempe, AZ off of Mill and Baseline has been a good steady place to find carp. If you have a closer canal in your neighborhood, do yourself a favor and walk or ride the banks with a bike and try to locate fish. Once you determine where the fish are you are ready to return with your fly fishing gear and let the fun begin. Can I fish here? Most of the canals are enter at your own risk and are posted as such. Some canals are posted NO walking, swimming, fishing, etc and you will be ask to leave if you try to fish there. What kind of fish can I find in the canal? You can find almost every kind of fish in our canals, but I am interested in finding Grass Carp (White Amur), the Common Carp, the colorful Koi, Mirror Carp, and even Goldfish will take a well presented fly. Your carp fishing success can be influenced by a number of outside factors. Some days you have fast water rushing down the canal, and that usually means the fish are sulking and hanging out near the bottom where you can’t see them. Sometimes you can walk up or down stream to the next dam and get more fish-able water. This is a visual sport where you need to see the fish you are casting to, and lighting is very important. I usually fish more mid day. Fishing early and late in the day produces glare and shadows that don’t give you a good look at the fish. Carp are not shy about getting in the buffet line for food. That green band of algae on the canal bank will hold fish, and carp will eat it with great gusto, slurping, sucking, and moaning affectionately at their food, it’s almost obscene. The structure of a shopping cart discarded in a canal will hold fish. If vegetation falls in the water with enough regularity to form a seam, carp will eat it. Watch for flowers, seeds, berries, carp will feed just like trout eating insects. I have had better luck with casting to fish on the far bank or mid stream. Getting a good drift to a fish that is on the same side of the canal as you is difficult. Gear needs are simple: Rod - 9 foot 5 weight rod will work fine on the canals, your basic reel with a weight forward floating line will work well, and I use a 4 foot piece of 20 pound fluorocarbon to start and a 6 pound 4 foot long section of fluorocarbon as my tippet. I usually carry two boxes of carp flies, but will generally use a green rubber legged beetle as my go to carp fly in the canals. The canals are hard to remove hooked fish unless you have a long handle fish net. I also find that a stripping basket is helpful to keep me from standing on my fly line. Polarized sun glasses are a necessity for spotting fish. For those of you who are not ready to announce that you plan to go carp fishing, you may want to tell friends and family that you are going for a walk in the park. Desert Fly Casters

Hook: size 14 nymph hook, Tiemco 3761 or Daiichi D 1560Bead: 7/64 GoldThread: 6/0 white or chartreuseBody: Chartreuse micro-chenille. I also tie some with olive.Tail/legs: small white round rubber legs, or orange barred legs like Spirit Rivers “Taran-tu-Leggs”Tying notes: The only thing even remotely challenging about tying this fly is the legs/tail. To make these, I double over a single length of leg material (about 3” long) and lash it to the top of the hook, with the closed end of the loop facing back, and the open end facing the eye of the hook. Leave some room behind the bead when wrapping forward, so that you can take one or two wraps of chenille between the legs and the bead head. It is this wrap of chenille that forces the legs out to the side.

Once the fly is tied, you can then cut open the back loop of rubber to form the split tail. You want the tails and legs to be a bit long—this drives the bluegills crazy.Backstory and fishing notes: I have used flies like this many years for bluegills. Over the years, the length of the tails and legs has increased a little bit, because the big bluegills have voted with their mouths! I usually fish two of these flies (an olive and a chartreuse), using a floating line, a 9’ 5X leader, and a very slow retrieve. Give the flies plenty of sink time before starting your retrieve. For whatever reason, the chartreuse version almost always out fishes any other color.

I do fish. I think there is a connection between thinking and fishing mostly because you spend a lot of time up to your waist in water without a

whole lot to keep your mind busy.Anthony Doerr
