From Pastor Kent

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

At the time of this writing there have been many horrific tragedies in our country and

around the world. It seems like every time we gather on Sunday for worship something

catastrophic has happened by the hands of an individual or small group of people. Black

men are being killed. Police are being targeted and murdered. Groups of people are being

shot, run over, or are the target of an explosive. Innocent groups of people numbering 49 or

84 or 8 or 4 or 3 or 5 or 20 are dying while hundreds are wounded. I grab my forehead and shake my head shout-

ing “No!” “Stop it!” My heart breaks and my whole being is in angst. People are asking, “What is the world

coming to?”, or saying, “I don’t understand it.” I personally think of my children Miranda, Tim, and Son-in-law

Justin, and my grandchildren Judah and Caleb, and the world they are growing up in. The conclusion: this is their

reality. This is the world they know, and it grieves me beyond measure. What are we to do? How do we face to-

morrow?

Brothers and Sisters, I don’t have all the answers but I know the one who does. I don’t understand, but I know the

one who does. For this I am sure and confident – God is present and He is still on the throne. He is the first one

shedding a tear every time a disaster takes place. There is no question that we are at war. “For our struggle is

not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world

and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Ephesians 6:12. There is an all-out attack by Sa-

tan in this world. Nevertheless, be sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is in control. Let us put our faith

and trust in Him and not be afraid though the world fall apart around us. “For God has not given us a spirit of

fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind.” 1 Timothy 1:7. Trust God, be strong, and hold to the faith.

Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep inviting others to know Jesus. “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid.

For the Lord your God goes with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Pastor Kent

Christmas Dinner Theatre Auditions Yes, it’s that time of year again! We’re gearing up for our 22nd annual Christmas Dinner

Theatre. Set in late 1941, I'll Be Home for Christmas is the story of the faith of a family, and a

nation on the brink of World War II, preparing to celebrate the birth of the Prince of Peace.

Most of the action takes place in the main characters' home, with the choir providing music

and drama as it is broadcast over the family radio. The music highlights the sounds of the '40s,

including swing, lush ballads, and big band songs interspersed with reenactments of radio

broadcasts during that time. Original music mixed with familiar Christmas favorites form the

backdrop for this memorable dramatic musical. I hope YOU will plan on being part of this

heart-warming show. Auditions will be held Aug. 16 & 17 from 6:00—8:00. (You only need to

attend one night.) For a script and/or music book, please see Brenda Dye.

through music. If you are feeling God nudging you in that direction, take the leap! Your

Church, your music department and your God can use you. For Praise Team or

Technical Arts inquiries, contact Anthony ([email protected]). All other inquiries,

Summer Opportunities

Sweet Memories - Senior Adult Choir sings on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesdays of each month at 10:30 a.m. in Room 107.

They have a great time of fellowship. Following their songfest, the fun continues over lunch at one of our area

restaurants. Come join us! Our first gathering of the season will be September 7th.

Glory Bells - Adult Handbell Choir rehearses each Wednesday 5:15—6:00 in Room 113. A basic knowledge of music is

helpful to be a part of this group. They perform occasionally throughout the season and are a staple of the Christmas

Treasurer’s Update Page 4

August 2016

“Stewardship ”

Brothers and Sisters in Christ. We are at the mid-year point for 2016 and as I prepare to present the financial update to you, I thought I would share these words from James A. Harnish’s book “Earn. Save. Give., Wesley’s Simple Rules for Money” excerpted from Wesley’ sermon “The Good Steward”. “We are now indebted to Him for all we have; but although a debtor is obliged to return

what he has received, yet until the time of payment comes, he is at liberty to use it as he pleases. It is not so with a stew-ard; he is not at liberty to use what is lodged in his hands as he pleases, but as his master pleases….For he is not the propri-etor of any of these things, but barely entrusted with them by another….Now, this is exactly the case of every man, with relation to God. We are not at liberty to use what he has lodged in our hands as we please, but as He pleases, who alone is the possessor of heaven and earth, and the Lord of every creature. We have no right to dispose of anything we have, but according to His will, seeing we are not proprietors of any of these things.” For the month of June, contributions of $58,000 were below expenses of $69,000, leaving a shortfall of $11,000. Year to date we received $406,000 in operating contributions and spent $472,000 to support our ministries, staff, facilities and ap-portionments resulting in a shortfall of $66,000 for the period. Our average weekly operational giving is $15,600 compared to our weekly need of $17,322, a deficit of $1,722. To make up the shortfall over the remainder of the year our weekly contributions need to be $19,043, an increase of 22% or $3,443 per week. For the year so far, we received $17,000 towards our New Sanctuary Fund which now stands at $738,000 As you make your tithes and designated giving, please consider the many methods available for your convenience to return your gifts to God:

On-Line Giving via the link on www.umcpb.org/giving using your debit or credit card in a secure account

Schedule payments via your bank’s On-Line banking program or via electronic funds transfers Checks payable to UMCPB or cash mailed or delivered to the office or placed in the collection plate

We are grateful for all your support of the ministries of UMCPB. Please let me know if you have any questions on Church finances.

Extending God’s extravagant love by opening our hearts and doors to persons with disabilities

It is such a joy to be speaking to someone in the community about our Through the Roof Ministry and the person responds with, “Oh yeah, you are the church who held Night to Shine.” We then discuss exactly where the church is located. How wonderful to be known as a church who accepts people who are different. Did you know that 90% of people with disabilities do not attend a church. Many of

them have been hurt or thrown out of churches. My friends, you are doing a good job of extending God’s extravagant love by opening your doors and hearts to people with disabilities.

In July, the Amigos TAG, our group of adults with special needs, met for worship and bible study. Dur-ing their time, one of our group suggested we make blankets for children in the hospital. So with the help of many, we have made 60 blankets to take to the Children’s Hospital at St. Mary’s. In August, we will make a trip to the hospital to deliver the blankets to the boys and girls. Thank you for those who helped!

Also in August, we are holding a Friday Fun Night of bingo and ice cream. We will open this event up to the community for individuals with special needs. You, as members of this church, are also en-couraged to attend. So, if you are available, please come to sit beside and help someone with the bingo cards or just play and have fun. If you have any small prizes, please give to Phyllis or Debbie Coolidge.

We will be once again hosting Night to Shine on February 10, 2017. Our planning has already begun. Many volunteers will be needed. Prayerfully consider how you can help.

Check out our new website: www.throughtheroofumcpb.net

Thank you for the opportunity to lead this wonderful ministry. In Christ’s Love, Phyllis

UMW News

Our foremothers left us a legacy of innovative mission, and we continue that legacy by being the organization the world needs today.

Until poverty, violence, inequality, racism, preventable deaths cease, until women and children are no longer marginalized, until we live in a world in which all thrive, women need to be organized for mission.

United Methodist Women will move into four new priority areas for our mission work in this quadrennium.

Our petitions to General Conference will focus on continuing our existing work and will build on these new

priority areas:

Climate Justice

Maternal and Child Health

Ending Mass Incarceration and

Economic Inequality

Through The Roof Ministry Page 13

Extending God’s extravagant love by opening our hearts and doors to persons with disabilities

It is such a joy to be speaking to someone in the community about our Through the Roof Ministry and the person responds with, “Oh yeah, you are the church who held Night to Shine.” We then discuss ex-actly where the church is located. How wonderful to be known as a church who accepts people who are different. Did you know that 90% of people with disabilities do not attend a church. Many of them have been hurt or thrown out of churches. My friends, you are doing a good job of extending God’s extrava-gant love by opening your doors and hearts to people with disabilities.

In July, the Amigos TAG, our group of adults with special needs, met for worship and bible study. During their time, one of our group suggested we make blankets for children in the hospital.

You, as members of this church, are also encouraged to attend. So, if you are available, please come to sit beside and help someone with the bingo cards or just play and have fun. If you have any small prizes, please give to Phyllis or Debbie Coolidge.

We will be once again hosting Night to Shine in February 10, 2017. Our planning has already begun. Many volunteers will be needed. Prayerfully consider how you can help.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead this wonderful ministry.

In Christ’s Love,

Phyllis

UMCPB Family Promise Team,

It is that time to start gearing for the UMCPB Family Promise Host week starting August 21st

till August 27th. Last host week was an improvement from the previous weeks and we got lots of accolades from the volunteers, below are some of the comments. Thanks so much for your service and for helping this ministry goal to help families in our local community.

"I think you guys did a fine job putting this together. Thank you” Scott and Mary Jo "Thanks for all you do for our church and for Family. God bless you and your family.” Carol & John Zipp "Great job! Congrats to the entire team” Margie Yansura "Great job by the Family Promise coordinating team. You are a blessing.” Beth Benvenuti "Jose, thank you so much!!! What a blessing,” Pam Cahoon Attached the timeline for the August 21st host week, as Tiffany brought to my attention this host week is one week after school start on August 15th. Tiffany has great ideas that will correlate the start of school and the start of service. This date may represent a challenge but I know we will do great. From the recent Family Promise emails it seems that the program is full, meaning that we may have multiple families and all volunteering positions will need to fill.

Again thank you all for your time and for been part of the team, it is truly a pleasure to serve the Lord.

Thanks,

Sammy Rodriguez UMCPB Family Promise Computer Coordinator 561-312-3516 (mobile) [email protected]
