SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES – SHOP LOCALLY 3
July has been a challenging month for the Nightingale in Brislington. There were a few
mistakes on my part such as writing down the wrong information about St Anne’s Well, and a few delivery issues to boot. However, the future is becoming more optimistic. Many of you have emailed or phoned to volunteer delivering magazines to your road and for that I’m grateful. Last month we had a lot of help from Rhian Greaves, Kayleigh and Mikayla Jones, Terry Hicks, Kerri Hall, Ruth Morgans and Heather Hogg.
This month we have contributions from Ken Taylor about St. Anne’s Well - do buy his book from the Library
if you’d like to learn more about our local institution, Jonathan Rowe on the Brislington Conservation and Historical Society, plus cool artwork from Nombo. On top of that we have the regulars, What’s On and a spot from the Women’s Institute.
There are some big changes ahead though, we will be going bi-monthly until Christmas so there’s more time for me to organise new editions. It’s been quite tough to organize each issue while delivering them and working at the same time. This means a autumn/halloween special in October and then a Christmas/New Year special in December.
With Halloween in mind, we have launched a themed short story contest for both adults and kids here - http://bit.do/brizcontest1. We’ll be working on a fantastic range of prizes that includes being published in the magazine and hopefully, in a print anthology too.
Don’t forget, you can support both me and the Nightingale by becoming a Patron here: http://bit.do/nightingale - Please support us if you can.

Brislington Goes Green ApeThe winning project in Brislington for the 2015 Neighbourhood Arts Project as part of Bristol’s Green Capital 2015 Award will be the Sailor’s Walk project run by The APE Project. Based in St. George, the APE Project will be engaging residents around St. Anne’s Woods with an arts/play trail in November.
According to Bristol 2015, the APE Project “are an artist/playworker led community arts, play and environmental organisation. Their passion is for empowering communities and creating opportunities for children, young people and adults to engage in
meaningful ways in arts and play for positive social, individual and environmental outcomes. APE have done lots of engagement work in Greater Brislington, so will be welcomed back warmly.”
So far, the Nightingale has been unable to get any more details about the project, how it relates to the environment, how they might engage with the wider Brislington community or what its long term legacy will be. Hopefully more will be revealed in the coming months.
NewsWick Road Library Saved? The battle is not over yet, but Wick Road Library took a step toward safety after recent council meetings. It now appears that the library on Wick Road will be saved, but nothing has been set in stone. If saved for now, the library will be faced with shorter opening hours (min. 20 per week) and a greater dependency on volunteers. This is a statement of intent only, so it is not binding and we will only fi nd out the fi nal decision in the September council meeting.

Brislington Women’s Institute @BrislingtonWI
PLEASE NOTE: NO AUGUST MEETINGNEXT MEETING: Tuesday 15th Sept.THEME: The science of fi reworks.
This year the Women’s Institute celebrates it’s 100th birthday. And with it a whole host of
festivities – the highlight in many people’s books being a garden party hosted by the Duchess of Cornwall in Buckingham Palace.
Inspired by this Brislington Wi are holding our very own garden party for the whole family on Sunday 6th September. The price of tickets include a high tea consiting of a selection of sandwichs, savories and cakes, along with scones and cream.
All proceeds will go to charity including The Rainbow Centre for Children - our charity of the year.
We can’t promise the Duchess of Cornwall, but there will be a live band, games for all, face painting, and a lot of laughs (and a limited licenced bar – well… its not all about the tea in Brislington WI! )
To book your tickets please contact Janice on 07814 030413 or email [email protected]

Brislington Conservation and History Society (BCHS) was formed in 1984 to promote interest
in Brislington past, present and future. The society established a conservation area, centred around the old village and 15th century parish church of St. Luke’s, and was involved in the saving of Lynwood House on Bath Road, currently being restored and redeveloped after being derelict for 30 years.
We have produced many leafl ets and articles on the local history of Brislington, as well as two books Brislington (1995) and Brislington Revisted (2008), and the BCHS has also collaborated with two local history DVDs, Yesterday’s Brislington (2001) and Brislington Remembered (2002) made by 1st Take Video.
We hold monthly meetings in St Cuthbert’s Church Crypt, Sandy Park Road, on the last Thursday of the month, which are open to non members. Members can also join in on coach trips, social occasions and other events.
If would like to become a member, have a Brislington local history enquiry, or just want to fi nd out more, come along to one of our events contact Chairman, Jonathan Rowe [email protected].
Annual individual membership is £5 single or £7.50 for a couple (at same address). We look forward to seeing you!

The well as we know it, with its circular stone wall and enclosing railings, was constructed
when St Anne’s Wood opened as a public park in the early 1920s. Several years later the well was given a pillared canopy with a stone sphere on top (instantly targeted by boys throwing stones). Today’s picturesque little ruin serves peacefully as a wishing well, but with the centenary of the park drawing near, thoughts of restoration – even complete re-landscaping – will come to the fore.
We may distrust the medieval coins found in the well, but other artefacts date to the early 1700s, so this was no mere Victorian folly. The 18th century well shaft may have replaced a much older structure, and it’s possible this site was sacred even before the medieval pilgrimages to the chapel downstream.
Modern visitors still fi nd something special about this place. It seems to calm everyday cares and, in this clearer frame of mind, new insights can solve problems... As such, it may still be claimed as a healing site. Is it just coincidence that the tranquil waters of this holy well were said to improve eyesight – helping us see more clearly?
We need to approach the question of its future with great care and sensitivity – or risk spoiling something possibly very ancient, rare and valuable indeed.
By Ken Taylor, author of The holy well and the Chapel of St Anne in the Wood (on view and on sale at Wick Road Library).
