Chapelwood’s Mission is to embody God’s grace as we receive it to those who need it.

The Chapelwood family is a service-focused body of believers who welcome all to experience God’s grace and goodness through Christian community. While we are determined to “take church” to those who do not belong to a local church family, we also delight in serving those individuals and families within our church. We provide ongoing faith-building activities and meaningful fellowship opportunities for men, women, youth, and children.

1,190—what does this number represent?I suppose it could be any number of things:• The number of miles driving from Houston to Colorado;• The number of children, youth, and adults who participated

in VBS, Summit, and Choir Camp (actually this number plus another 300!);

• The approximate year that St. Patrick’s cathedral was built in Dublin (1192), where the Chancel Choir toured this summer with the Houston Children’s Chorus;

• In August, the number of days someone whose sobriety birthday is May 1, 2012 has been sober;

• The approximate number of online viewers who watched at least one of our worship communities on the web this summer.

My guess is you might have your own definition of what this number represents to you this summer. My point is this – it is less important to record the number than it is to think about the story that the number tells.

The early name given by outsiders for the small groups that John and Charles Wesley started was “Methodists.” It was an insulting way to refer to the methodical system the Wesleys were encouraging for spiritual formation. Some might say we have not come too far from those early days of being overly methodical, and I might agree

if number tracking and statistical reports were the ultimate goal. However, just as in the days of the Wesleys, the purpose of capturing numbers and statistics is not just to report those numbers and statistics. Data always tells a story.

At Chapelwood, we have five unique worship communities for children, youth, and adults. We try to capture the statistics of these communities in attendance and participation in the life of the church, but the real purpose is to try to capture in words and stories the life-forming work of God in our midst.

This fall you will start hearing a lot more about the spiritual pathway or journey at Chapelwood in your worship community. Each of us is invited to discern where God is shaping us and calling us to serve. Remember – don’t get bogged down in the numbers or the details of all the different small groups and serving opportunities. God is uniquely shaping the story of grace within you and around you.

Peace, abundant peace,

Melissa Maher Community Pastor, Mercy Street

Please excuse our dustThis summer is seeing the repair and renovation of two of our large gathering spaces – the Fellowship Hall and the Chapel. The Fellowship Hall work is primarily cosmetic – while efforts in the Chapel involved replacin several ceiling boards that fell and re-securing all ceiling boards.

We appreciate everyone’s patience with any disruption that has occurred due to these efforts, and look forward to the completion of all repairs later this summer.

Karen Lopes is Chapelwood’s new Director of the Special Needs Ministry. Originally from Honduras, she moved to New York with her family when she was eleven and then to Texas in 1998. Karen attended Spring Woods Middle School and graduated from Spring Woods High School. Shortly thereafter she enrolled in community college and later graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Special Education. She has a four-

year-old half-Labrador, half-Chow named “Snooki.”The Special Needs community wasn’t a part of her original career

plan, though. In high school she was an assistant manager at Pier 1, but after she graduated and that store closed she decided to do something completely different—teach. She inquired at the Arbor School, not knowing it was a school for kids with special needs. She prayed about it, was accepted, and taught there for three years. “I fell in love with the special needs community,” she said. “God just kind of placed me there.”

Along the way she heard about a part-time position at Memorial Drive Presbyterian – helping a child with autism. That ten-hour-a-week job transformed into a full time job composed of two parts: special needs director and preschool co-director. That allowed her to

do ministry and use her special needs training, and she decided that was the path that was right for her.

And now she’s here at Chapelwood – with an office in the Family Ministry area near the Game Room. She’s been on staff for about two months – learning about the programs and meeting the volunteers involved in the different areas: Circle of Friends, Pal’s Place, Special Artists in Action, and Super Place Camp – scheduled to be held here at Chapelwood this year.

Karen is looking forward to expanding the children’s side of the Special Needs ministry. “We are really good at doing what we do for teens and adults, but we should offer more for our little ones,” she said. “Right now I’m trying to figure out what we do with that.”

Karen wants everyone to know that there are volunteer opportunities available for any and all of the different programs in the ministry. The greatest need is a Sunday School leader – someone who will plan and teach the lesson - for the Circle of Friends adults. All programs need “buddies,” who are those extra people in the room making sure things go smoothly and helping out as needed. The Circle of Friends Wednesday night program and Special Artists in Action program are off during the summer, but will start up again this September.

If you see Karen in the hallway, say “Hello.” If you’ve been looking for a way to get involved and think that the Special Needs ministry might be what you’re looking for, let her know. She can be reached at (713) 354-4475 or [email protected].

Welcome Karen Lopes

Kristin Kruse and Wes Lotz participated in Chapelwood’s Prepare/Enrich premarital counseling program, led by Kaisi Cunningham, in preparation for their July wedding. Kristin and Wes met after she asked a colleague if he knew any smart, Christian, single men. Kristin's co-worker set her up with his law school classmate Wes Lotz. That was not the first time they’d crossed paths. If you look at their Memorial High School graduation picture, you can see Kristin and Wes standing four people apart waiting to receive their diplomas. Kristin and Wes now practice law two blocks away from each other’s offices in downtown Houston. The happy couple sat down recently with Allison Carter to share their experiences with Chapelwood’s premarital counseling.

Kristin: Chapelwood’s wedding coordinator Toni Meason told us about the premarital program. We wanted to do everything we could to be ready to have a great marriage so we put it on our calendars and attended the February session.

Wes: Chapelwood’s premarital counseling program covers a lot of ground including communication, finances, family background, religious beliefs, conflict resolution, household responsibilities, and more. The focus of Prepare/Enrich is building and strengthening your relationship and making sure you discuss important topics before you get married. Kristin: You start by taking an online test ahead of time. You answer a hundred or so questions and rate various issues. The purpose of the test is not to determine whether you’re supposed to marry the person but to equip each of you to be a better spouse for the other. The test helps you be more in tune with how your future spouse views the world and vice versa. Participants should not be afraid of the test or think if they take it they’ll be given a score that says, “Don’t marry this person.” There are no wrong answers.Wes: The online survey took about 30 minutes. You answer the questions on your own, and they compile the results and group them into categories. The questions are attitude oriented – how strongly do you agree or disagree with a particular statement. Kristin: For example, financial management – rate whether or not you think that is the husband’s responsibility. Do you strongly agree, somewhat agree, have no opinion, or disagree? Or is it the wife’s responsibility? The questions and test results help facilitate conversations when it’s time to discuss finances. Wes: Chapelwood's program strikes a balance between group activities and private breakout sessions with your fiancée. A counselor introduces each topic, and then you and your fiancée can talk privately about the topic and how you both answered the questions on that topic. The room was arranged with bistro tables so there is enough privacy to talk. You could also go to the Fellowship Hall or walk outside to a bench – wherever you felt comfortable. Kristin: I found the structure of the conversations and topics to be helpful. In such a fast-paced world, it is great to have a full day that is dedicated to focusing on getting ready for marriage without any distractions. You’re not going to cover everything in one day, but having some structure makes it easier to have an in-depth conversation and identify topics for further discussion.Wes: In addition to the breakout sessions, they had newlywed-style games which allowed us to meet some the other couples who were

also getting married at Chapelwood. Kristin: The newlywed game happened during the lunch hour. That was a lot of fun – couples had the option to answer questions in front of the group or at their tables. Participation was on a volunteer basis, so no one felt put on the spot. Wes: Another one of the things we liked about the Chapelwood program is that participants were from all age groups and stages of life. In total, there were about 20-30 couples who were engaged or in a long-term relationship. Kristin: It was also helpful that Toni Meason came during the lunch hour to answer questions about how weddings are conducted at Chapelwood. She answered questions about the timeline for meeting with the minister, the organist, and herself, to determine the order of worship and music for the wedding ceremony. Wes: At the end of the program, you receive a certificate for a discount on your marriage license for completing a premarital counseling course. Normally the marriage license costs $70, but with the certificate the marriage license only costs $12. Kristin: We are so excited to be getting married. We told Rev. Wick Stuckey, who will be officiating at our wedding, that we want the theme of our wedding to be “To God be the glory.” We are so grateful to have found each other. We want our wedding to be focused on giving Him thanks and giving Him the credit for bringing us together.

IN THE BEGINNING…A STUDY OF GENESIS 1, 2, AND 3 WITH JOHN STEPHENSWednesdays, September 9 – 30, 6:30 p.m., ChapelJoin Senior Pastor John Stephens to study the foundation of our faith as it is presented in the first three chapters of the Bible. Here we get more information about God, creation, and ourselves than we may have ever imagined. The content of Genesis is vitally important, but the way the book is written tells us just as much about the Hebrews’ understanding of God, humanity and the relationship between God and humanity. Many questions are raised as well, and we will take a look at some of them.

MEN'S LIFE BBQ KICKOFFWednesday, September 2, 6:00 p.m., Fireside Room Men’s Life is a weekly gathering focusing on men's identities as Christians in the family and workplace. Presentations are followed by small group time for personal interaction. Invest in other men's lives as others invest in you. We’ll kick off with a Goode Company barbecue dinner and begin the study in October after John Stephens’ “In the Beginning” study concludes. Go to www.chapelwood.org/menslife to register for dinner.

NEW EVENING STUDY FOR WOMENWednesdays beginning October 7, 6:30 p.m., East RoomGet in on the ground floor of this new discipleship group for women that will meet in the evening, complete with childcare and optional dinner before the study. Designed for working women and their busy schedules, this study will renew those who participate through a mid-week time of spiritual refreshment. If you are interested in helping to shape this study, contact Teresa Rossy in August at [email protected]

A LIFELONG LOVE BOOK STUDYWednesdays, September 16 – November 4, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., W203What if marriage is about more than just staying together? This view of marriage by best-selling author and Houston pastor Gary Thomas will be discussed in a safe setting with other couples. It will be facilitated by Chapelwood members and certified marriage mentor couples Gianna and Stuart Cooley and Trisha and Ted Mohle. A dinner with the author is planned for Sunday, September 13. See the lower right-hand corner of page 11 for more information.

THEOLOGICAL BUFFET WITH REV. BOB JOHNSON AND AL HOPPEWednesdays beginning September 9, 6:30 p.m., W101-102Bob and Al are Bible scholars who enjoy leading groups into deeper theological waters. If you are hungry to combine Bible study with history, science and cultural learning, this is the group for you. New topics begin about every six weeks. Come for one or all short courses.

Chancel Choir Tours Ireland

The Chancel Choir (and a few friends and family) toured Ireland in June, beginning in Dublin and ending in Belfast, with stops in Kinsale, Kilkenny, Westport, Irvinestown, Derry, and the Antrim coast along the way. They sang in venues ranging from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin to the tiny First Methodist Church in Irvinestown.

The music they shared across the country ranged from spirituals to classics, and for two of the concerts they were joined by the Houston Children’s Chorus. Of course there was plenty of time for sightseeing. The friendliness of the Irish people and the beautiful weather left everyone in agreement this was one of the best choir tours ever.

JOY OF THE LORD WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDYThursdays, September 10 - March 24, 9:30 a.m., W101Hebrews: Jesus is Better - Part IIn today’s world it can be challenging to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Maybe you claim Christ as your Lord and Savior but on a day-to-day basis you don’t know what that means. The book of Hebrews can help. The Tabernacle/Temple - Part IIThe tabernacle was a sign of God dwelling among His people. The Temple replaced the tabernacle yet all of the practices of the priesthood continued to point to Him in this more permanent structure. We will study how God’s plan all along was for the Temple to direct us to Christ.

SURVIVING DIVORCE, THRIVING AGAIN SUPPORT SERIESKickoff Workshop, Thursday September 17, 6:00 – 8:30 p.m., Fireside RoomSupport Group Series, Sundays, September 20 – November 8, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Fireside Room “I want a divorce.” Those are easily four of the most devastating words a person can hear or say. And yet, there are another four words a person can say -- “I want to heal.” This workshop and support group series, led by Deanne Yartz and Wendy Campbell, MSW, LCSW, is designed to help those who are divorced or divorcing take positive steps toward healing and wholeness.

During our time together, there will be time to discuss our struggles and focus on our strengths over a meal. Not only will we be equipped with helpful strategies, but we will be able to meet and share with others who are experiencing a similar journey and hope to rebuild their lives and thrive. For more information and to register, go to www.chapelwood.org/divorcesupport.

GRIEF SUPPORT August meetings - Mondays, August 3, 17, and 317:00 p.m., W203Have you suffered the death of a loved one and found that your friends and family are unable to truly understand what you are going through or what you are feeling? Pam and John Adams experienced the death of their daughter five years ago, have wrestled with the road to healing, and want to assist others who are having similar struggles. The grief support group will be offered in the Mercy Street tradition of "Come as you are." Hurt, bewilderment, anger, and doubt are recognized to be common in the grief experience and will be accepted with nonjudgmental support. This ongoing support group will meet every other Monday. All are welcome as they discover their need, and may continue as long as they feel it necessary.

"At the beginning of my senior year, I did not think that I would be attending college after I graduated from high school, but you gave me the inspiration and courage to believe in myself and to believe that I could do it...” Fatima R., Northbrook class of 2015, planning to attend University of Houston Downtown

“I have been waiting for a long time to say the following: I will be graduating next Spring with my Bachelor’s Degree. Not just one but two! I will earn one in Finance and the other in Marketing within the regular four year mark. I cannot explain how unreal this feels. I can still remember graduating from Northbrook just yesterday. The path to this level has been full of surprises but I am always grateful to those who helped me along the way……….Thank you for all that you did to push me to come to college. I am always grateful to have had you as my mentor.” Pablo P., Northbrook class of 2012, currently attending Texas A&M Kingsville

NORTHBROOK COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE STUDENTS CELEBRATE LIVING INTO THEIR T-2-4 GOALS!

Northbrook High School has the largest and longest running Collegiate Challenge program in SBISD. Started in 1999 by Chapelwood members Janet Sims and Pat Waldrop, the program connects adult mentors with high school seniors who need help navigating the college application process to fulfill their dreams of college enrollment. Most of the students are the first in their families to go to college.

While every graduating class is special, the 46 students and their mentors in the Northbrook Collegiate Challenge class of 2015 had much to celebrate! Among their group were the class Salutatorian, three Jesse H. Jones scholarship winners, the Boys and Girls Club Texas Student of the Year, and the Newspring Art Program scholarship winner. They completed applications to 27 different colleges and universities in four states, and have committed to 14 different universities, including UT Austin, Texas A&M, Texas Women’s University, LSU, and Sam Houston State, among others. One of the students will be serving as a US Marine. This year’s group also topped previous classes by earning over $1,000,000, collectively, in scholarships, grants, and awards!

The students were not the only ones who gained from their participation in the Collegiate Challenge program. New mentors Lori and Derek Jones described their experience with Collegiate Challenge this way:

“We became involved with Collegiate Challenge last year for the first time. We were really looking forward to helping young people in our area who were bright but had limited family

knowledge of the college application process."Neither of us had any idea how rewarding the experience

could be. We enjoyed the two students we were paired with immensely. They are great young people from Northbrook High School who had tremendous potential, applied to outstanding schools, were admitted based on their records, and who received substantial scholarship money to allow them to pursue their dreams and contribute to our community. They will be the first in their families to attend college. Our role was to help them navigate the process and encourage! The instruction we received as mentors made the process very simple! It was an honor to be a part of such a meaningful and impactful work, and we look forward to meeting our new protégés this September!”

Sincere thanks go to the Chapelwood community for supporting Northbrook Collegiate Challenge, and to our Chapelwood mentors who committed their time and talents to making the program so successful.

If you have a heart for young people and a desire to truly make a positive impact on the future of Houston and our community, then Collegiate Challenge may be for you! Collegiate Challenge meets during the school year on Thursday nights from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Northbrook High School. A mentor training and information session will be held at Chapelwood on August 30, from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. in LC211-212. For more information, contact Patty Cordrey at (281) 216-6102 or [email protected].

Bishop Huie sent a request to Texas churches that $500,000 be raised by June 30 for all Texas disasters, including the floods and Van tornado. Chapelwood sent a donation in the amount of $20,000 to the Texas Annual Conference toward this initiative. An additional $10,000 was sent to our local partner Gracewood for flood damage, and $5,000 was sent to Wimberley UMC to help directly with Wimberley efforts.

A long-time Chapelwood member reached out requesting donations of food for the 2,000 volunteers working in Wimberley. Ivan Rhone provided a large amount of food from our kitchen that was cooked and sent, and we also provided $1,000 to three local restaurants in Wimberley that prepared and delivered meals. These efforts were led by Betsy Sutherland, whose parents Fran and Dick Adams lost their home in the flood. Stephen Simmons coordinated with Betsy as well so that SUMMIT teams (in the area June 21–25) could go to Wimberley to help with cleanup. We are very proud of the financial and physical support Chapelwood members gave to the flood relief efforts. Thank you!

SHARE OPPORTUNITIESTHINKING ABOUT CHOIR? NOW’S THE TIME!Now is a great time to come sing with the Chancel Choir! Just give it a try for 90 days. You don’t have to commit for a lifetime. We will begin rehearsing Christmas music in September, and what a wonderful time to be singing in the choir that is. We sing every Sunday morning at the 11:10 a.m. Sanctuary service, and in December we will have a concert of Christmas music with an orchestra and sing for the 9:00 p.m. Christmas Eve Candlelight service. If you haven’t seen that service from the choir loft, you don’t know what you’re missing. It is a spectacular sight and so meaningful.

We are a close-knit, fun loving, caring group of people who would love to have you become a part of us. We are so privileged to participate in the worship services on Sundays as well as other events throughout the year.

No reservations or auditions are necessary. Just show up Wednesday evening in the Choir Room a little before 7:00 p.m. for rehearsal, and someone will be there to greet you and get you started on being a part of our choir. We’re usually out by 8:30 p.m. or so. On Sunday mornings we meet at 10:30 a.m. to warm up and prepare for the worship service.

Consider making Chancel Choir part of your service to Chapelwood for 90 days. We think you’ll want to stay for even longer. We are truly blessed to be a blessing.

BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE — SPONSOR A CHILD! Please sponsor a child through Memorial Assistance Ministries’ annual Back To School Campaign to help children prepare for a new school year. You may donate any amount and 100% of your donations will be used to purchase school clothing and supplies.

A table will be set up Sunday mornings in the Fountain Hallway on August 2, 9, and 16. Online donations may be made through www.chapelwood.org/donations, or checks can be made payable to Chapelwood with “MAM Back to School” in the memo line. Please send checks to the church, attn: Colleen Lingle.

THE BRANCH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM NEEDS YOUR HELP

MAKING IT BETTER – ONE CHILD AT A TIME

Success means different things to different people, but to the kids we serve, success means learning to be a better reader; learning how to tackle a different situation in a positive manner; and learning that they have gifts, talents, and value. Our kids are taught that success doesn’t need to impress others; it’s about staying true to yourself and striving to be your best.

Making It Better (MIB) began at Walnut Bend Elementary in January 2007. Most of the original 91 students were children who had been evacuated to Houston as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Since that time, the MIB crew has worked tirelessly to address the severe disadvantages faced by at-risk children in the Houston area. How? By offering a variety of programs that provide quality support services to enhance students’ social-emotional learning and provide a foundation for academic success. Programs are tailored to meet the needs of each school campus. Whether the program is academic or enrichment-oriented, delivered during

or after school, on a school campus or in an apartment-based program; the overarching goal is always the same . . . developing relationships and improving self-esteem by sparking creativity, fostering the desire to succeed, developing social skills, and expanding life experiences.

MIB equips volunteers in a one-volunteer-to-six-student ratio (rather than the state’s 1:15 ratio) for a volunteer-facilitated mentoring program. Toddler story time and Family Literacy outreach events combine to educate parents and provide materials that promote not just literacy but reading for a lifetime.

Last year, the Chapelwood Foundation gave Making It Better a Community Giving Grant for their “Steps 2 Success” after-school program. To learn more about the Chapelwood Foundation or to make a direct gift to the Foundation, please contact Teresa Cannon at [email protected] or (713) 354-4485.

One of our outreach efforts in Spring Branch is The Branch Enrichment Program. Volunteers help elementary students in the community by picking them up from school in one of Chapelwood’s “Turtletop” vans, serving snacks, assisting with homework, and interacting with them during recreation activities. The hours are from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (except on SBISD holidays), at the Branch campus, 3911 Campbell

Road. You may volunteer for one or more hours per week – we are flexible!

School starts on Monday, August 24, and we hope to have a full team of volunteers helping this year. Please contact Christa Hash at [email protected] or Nina Hanks at [email protected] for more information.

JOYS AND CONCERNS

GIVE BLOOD…EVERY DROP COUNTSChapelwood will host a quarterly blood drive on Sunday, August 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., in the Courtyard Room. Representatives from M.D. Anderson will collect your donations. Cancer patients need more blood components than do patients with any other disease because cancer often impairs the bone marrow where blood cells are produced. M.D. Anderson's blood bank uses more than 300 units every day. This is why donors are the most important part of the process. Giving blood provides hope for cancer patients who depend on the support of their family and friends and on the generosity of donors just like you. Consider giving 20 to 30 minutes of your time to give a pint of blood. Walk-ins are welcome. Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. Eat a sensible meal within four hours prior to donation. You need to bring your driver's license to donate blood. For more information, contact Judy Sharp (713) 354-4443 or [email protected].
