MTEF AWARDS SPRING GRANTS Project Manhood/Women in Leadership at MTHS (grades 11-12)
Both programs connect student achievement, community service and public leadership through peer modeling and
mentoring. The programs offer the combination of positive character education as well as community service to others
while targeting at-risk students and focusing on high school retention rates. The student composition includes every
ethnicity within the school and district, and also includes special needs students.
Electrical Wiring Project at MTHS (grade 9)
The goal of the program is to increase the real world connection for 9th grade Physical Science students. Authentic
components are used to install a light and light switch implementing both theoretical and practical skills. Students learn
both the theory of basic home electricity as well as the hands-on skills needed to build an electrical component.
Biology Stream Study at MTHS (grade 10)
The biology stream study is designed to give 10th grade biology students the opportunity to incorporate what they are
learning about the environment and watershed management and conservation within the watershed of their local
community.
“F1 in Schools” Design & Engineering Competition Team (grades 9-12)
A team of five MTHS engineering (STEM) students coordinate their expertise and knowledge base to research, design,
build, test, and race a CO2 powered car according to strict specifications. They also present their work by designing and
building a display, creating a portfolio, and delivering an oral presentation.
Virtual Business Sports and Entertainment (grades 9-12)
This highly visual computer simulation of a football franchise lets students all aspects of running a business in conjunction
with Business Education classroom instruction. The simulation will provide an authentic application of business skills
while integrating technology in an interesting way for students. Continued on page 3

Alumnus Joins MTEF Team
Greg Will ’77 has joined the Manheim Township Educational Foundation (MTEF) team
as the Community Partners liaison. In this role he will work with local businesses to
develop opportunities for brand-building and marketing on the Manheim Township campus. Greg also has professional
experience as a golf course builder and general contractor.
While at MTHS, Greg played football for Coach Kruis and wrestled for Coach Whisler. Both sports were championship
teams at that time. His favorite faculty members were Mr. Gallagher (Art teacher), Coach Kruis and Coach Whisler.
Greg and his wife Dawn live in MT and have three children; Melissa ’00, Ryan ’07 and Austin ’13.
If you know of a business that would benefit from a Community Partnership with MTEF,
contact Greg at [email protected].
MTEF Spring Grants continued 2013 MT Summer Robotics Camp (grades 5-8)
The goal is to provide a fun, interactive and educational introduction to engineering systems and system control. It will
support students who have an interest and abilities in technology and engineering. Students completing the program will be
able to apply their basic NXT control system skills to successfully complete 6-10 design challenges of the “Deep Space
Terraformers” camp curriculum developed by Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy.
Concept 2 Rowers (grades 7-8)
The goal of this grant is to provide students with learning experiences that will not only educate students on how to exercise
properly, but also engage them in aerobic style exercise. Rowers would be incorporated into the curriculum to provide
students with the opportunity to build aerobic conditioning and stamina as well as core strength. They are also tools that
teachers can use to evaluate students’ aerobic capacity.
First in Math (grades K-6)
This software program allows access for all K-6 students to the First in Math program which focuses on math skills at
various levels. Students can use the program at school and at home to practice basic math facts, reinforce math concepts
being taught in class or challenge themselves with extended learning opportunities.
Sprouting Readers (grade EDK)
Headsprout Early Reading is a supplemental early reading program that ensures reading success for every child. It is
designed specifically to address the needs of non-readers, struggling readers, and beginning readers in the early grades.
Both the Extended Day and Full-Day Kindergarten at-risk students will be using this program to promote literacy skills.
Kindergarten Razzy Readers (grade Kindergarten)
Raz-Kids is an online, interactive reading program that gives students access to an extensive collection of print and online
books and quizzes. Raz-Kids provides teachers with detailed reports and the resources to fit instruction to the needs of
every student. The program can be accessed at school and at home to promote literacy.
Brecht Summer Reading Kickoff (Brecht Elementary School)
This program will allow each student to select a book to read over the summer to support the literacy skills learned during
the school year. The goal is to encourage reading even when school is not in session. Many of these students do not have
easy access to books in their homes so the book they receive will serve as a reminder to read over the summer. The
initiative will kick off at school with a year-end summer reading celebration. This grant is funded through the Louise Engle
Memorial Fund who was an alumna of MT and a retired teacher from Brecht. It was established by Fred Engle to support
the literacy efforts at Brecht.
NovaChat 7 (Speech/Language students)
The NovaChat 7 is a portable communication device that can be programmed with word-based systems, phrases and
sentences. This assistive technology would be purchased for use by students who cannot verbally communicate without
assistance. The NovaChat 7 would be used for a student trial to determine its effectiveness in improving communication
and thereby participation in school. If the device works for the student, the therapist will work with the family to apply for
a device through their personal insurance.

Did You Know… How the MT yearbook, Neff-Vue,
got its name?
Thanks to William “Bill” Glassman
’43, who donated two copies of the
original edition to the alumni office,
you will!
Bill served on the yearbook
committee and came up with the name
Neff-Vue as a takeoff on the theme
“Neff view”. The Neff School was a
significant building in the town of
Neffsville.
Researchers Seeking 1960-63 MT Graduates (originally printed by Lancaster Newspapers)
Researchers are looking for members of the Manheim Township High School graduating classes of
1960 through 1963 who participated in a national study 53 years ago.
The Project Talent study assessed the aptitudes and abilities, hope and expectations of 440,000 high
school students from across the U.S. from a wide range of demographic groups.
The graduating classes of Manheim Township took part in the study in 1960; no researchers are
trying to find them for follow-up interviews.
The study will assess how family and educational background affected participants and why some
of them stayed healthier and happier than others and are more able to enjoy their later life.
Study participants are asked to call 866-770-6077 or send an email to [email protected].
They also can visit the Project Talent website, projecttalent.org.

construction of a model car, a 20-page portfolio, a 10-minute
verbal presentation, and a display table.
The five-student MT team, called Imperia, and faculty adviser,
Jim Campbell are still working to secure the funds needed to
travel to the competition. If you would like to support this
