It. is. the. first. transitional.housing.program.within.the.State.of. Florida. specifically. designed.to.address.the.unique.needs.of.homeless.female.veterans.. According. to. Sara. Romeo,.CEO.of. Tampa.Crossroads,. Inc..and. Director. of. Athena. House,.“Our.goal.is.to.assist.our.homeless.and.at-risk.veterans.back.into.a.life. of. independence. through.economic. self-sufficiency.”. I. stood.out. in.my.yard. and. thought. about. the.grass,. I. let. my. imagination.start.churning..If.we.put.some.mulch.here.and.some.flowers.there.and.planted.some.grass.here…BINGO!. Best. yard. on.the. block!. Well,. maybe. not,.but.at.least.no.more.ugly.yard..I.put.the.plan.down.on.paper.and.showed.it.to.my.wife..She.gave.me.two.thumbs.up,.so.off.we.went.to.“Lowe’s.Depot”.to.get.what.we.needed. for.our.extreme. home. makeover,.“landscaping.edition.”We. picked. up. some. mulch.and. wall. blocks. and. grass.seed,.as.well.as.a.cart. full.of.other.odds.and.ends..But.we.still. needed. sprinklers.. I. had.done. some. looking. online.and.learned.what.not.to.buy,.based.on.ratings.and.reviews..I.ended.up.going.home.with.two.metal.lawn.sprinklers.with.spiked. bases. that. allowed.them. to. be. placed. in. one.spot.and.moved.as.needed..Perfect. for. an.area. the. size. I.was. irrigating.. Then. we. went.home. and. got. to. work.. I’ll.spare. you. the. griping. about.how.hot.it.was.–.it’s.Florida..It’s.July.. Nuff. said.. As. afternoon.rolled.on. toward.dusk.we.set.out.lawn.chairs.while.our.little.guy.ran.his.Big.Wheel.up.and.down.the.sidewalk..It.was.time.to.test.those.sprinklers..Next. door. there. were. two.other. kids. riding. bikes.. My.little.guy,.who. is.closing. in.on.three. years. old,. kept. running.next.door.and.asking.the.kids.to. play.. They. did. not. seem.too. interested. in.playing.with.someone.a.few.years.younger.than.they..After.all,.they.were.riding.bikes.and.“this.little.kid”.was. struggling. to. get. his. Big.Wheel. going.. They’re. sweet.kids,.but.they.were.doing.“big.kid”.stuff…and,.let’s.face.it,. it.takes. patience. to. deal. with.someone.who. is. just. learning.how.to.do…well,.pretty.much.everything..But. he. was. persistent,.repeatedly. trying. to. race.down. the. sidewalk. behind.the. other. kids. on. their. bikes,.getting. left. in. the. dust,. but.never. giving. up.. I. kept. one.eye. on. this. while. trying. to.find.the.right.spot.to.plant.my.sprinkler.. I.stuck.the.spike.into.a.corner.facing.the.street.and.hollered.to.my.wife.to.turn.on.the.water..With.that.signature.“squitch”. of. sound,. the.

sprinkler. kicked. on,. spraying.a.wide.arc.across. the.yard.. I.adjusted.a.bit. to.water.more.of. the. yard. and. less. of. the.street.. But. the. sidewalk. was.still. in. the. path. of. the.water..Remember,. this. is. July,. so. at.7. PM. the. mercury. was. still.hovering.around.90.degrees..Suddenly,. all. three. kids.had. abandoned. the. bikes.and. were. sprinting. through.the. spray,. laughing. and.playing…together.. I’m. not.sure.how.much.water.ended.up. on. them. instead. of. the.grass,. but. it. was. worth. it. to.see. that. connection. being.made..Now,. for. the.past. few.evenings,.the.kids.have.been.playing. together.. One. silly.thing. in. common. –. a. shared.joy. of. running. through. a.sprinkler. –. and. they. are. fast.friends..That. got.me. thinking. about.how. divisive. the. world. can.be. for.all.of.us.“grown. folks.”.Sure,. there. are. things. that.matter,. but. there. sure. seems.like.there.is.a.lot.of.anger.and.hostility. out. there. about. stuff.that,.well,.really.doesn’t.make.a. hill. of. beans. of. difference..We. may. not. know. as. much.as.the.other.guy,.or.they.may.know.less.than.us..Either.way,.it. can. take. patience.. But,.truth. is,.none.of.us.have. it.all.together..We.all.still.fall.off.our.bikes.now.and.then,.and. I’m.willing. to.bet. that.most. of. us.have. at. least. one. silly. thing.in. common.. I. think. I’ll. take.a.lesson. from. those. kids. and.start. focusing. more. on. what.unites. us. rather. than. what.divides. us..After.all,. on.a.hot.summer. night,. it. sure. feels.good. to. have. somebody. to.run.through.the.sprinklers.with.

MemorialWOLFERT, LaVerne Marie 89, of Sun City Center, passed away

July 19, 2012. She was a member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Wolfert; her daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Jay Broida; her son-in-law, Robert Linc, and her brother, Edward Dunn. Survivors include her son, Kenneth (Patricia) Wolfert; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl (Nick) Bonnema, Connie Linc and Barbara (Ray) Stinson, 12

grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 702 Valley Forge Boulevard, Sun City Center. Sun.City.Center.is.something.special.The.Fourth.of.July.breakfast.was.the.second.for.SCC..Last.year’s.breakfast,.that.CA.Director.Ann.Marie. Leblanc. spearheaded,.was.part.of.the.50th.Anniversary.Celebration. she. chaired,. and.it. was. so. popular. that. another.was.set. for. this.year.. The.cadre.of.volunteers.served.about.1,025.people. from. 7. a.m.. to. noon..Diners.had.a.great.time.meeting.new. people,. socializing. with.those. they. already. knew,. and.enjoying. the. food. and. great.organ.music....Last. year’s. fireworks. display—again.part.of.the.50th.events—was. so. well. received. that.fundraising. started. immediately.for. 2012.. Front.Gate..After. the.call.of.escaped.cattle.was.made,. the. cowboys.would. arrive. in. their. big,. old.pick-up.pulling.a.trailer.with.their.horses. patiently. waiting. to. start.the. round.up..One.morning. the.cowboys.were.moving.the.herd.across.the.street.when.one.of.the.cows.slipped.and.fell.in.the.lane,.spooking.all.the.other.cows.who.took.off.running.in.every.direction.possible..Those.cowboys.were.still.rounding.up.the.cattle.after.the.Construction. Gate. was. locked.up.tight.at.5pm.That’s. what. the. South. Gate.was.called.in.the.beginning--the.Construction. RADM Chambers to Speak at MOAA MeetingRADM Larry C. Chambers will be

the featured speaker at the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) meeting / luncheon on Wednesday August 1st at the Sun City Center Atrium. The event will take place at 11:00 am in the Florida Room ($14.00). ADM Chambers received

scholarship offers from top universities, including Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but opted for the U.S. Naval Academy, earning his naval aviator’s gold wings in 1954. He flew just about everything the Navy used as fighters or fighter-bombers during his career. He started flying in the WWII vintage Corsair and did his last flights in the F-18. ADM Chambers was given command of the USS Midway (CV-41) in March 1975 and the ship was subsequently ordered out of Subic Bay Naval Station in the Philippines to take position off the coast of the Southern tip of South Vietnam. The Midway took over 3,000 Vietnamese onboard before sailing to Thailand to offload them and the Air Force helicopters.Chambers was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1976. He assumed

command of Carrier Group Three in 1979-80. He retired from the Navy in 1985.

NCWS Makes It An Even Dozen NCWS (Nondenominational Christian Worship Services) is honored and thankful to an-nounce the beginning of their 12th weekly worship service. Orchestra will conclude its summer series of concerts August 4 in Sun City Center, and August 5 in Riverview. “A Collection of Overtures” is drawn mostly from scores for operas, operettas and other stage works, ranging from Richard Wagner’s Overture to Tannhauser in 1845 to Aaron Copland’s “Outdoor Overture,” composed for use in a high school music program in 1938. Conducted by Dr. Susan Bailey Robinson, the SSSO will present,

in addition to the Wagner and Copland works, the overture to Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Nabucco,” the “Poet and Peasant” overture by Franz von Suppé, Johann Strauss II’s overture to “Die Fledermaus,” and the overture to “Egmont” by Ludwig van Beethoven. Wayne Bengston is the Sun City Center Photo Club’s featured photographer for the summer photo display at the SCC Chamber of Commerce. This is part of a series of photographic displays at the SCC Chamber of Commerce at 1651 Sun City Center Plaza. Wayne’s exhibit is entitled Americana. His interest in photography was sparked by the scenery around him and he has taken many country and city landscapes. Wayne has been a member of the SCC Photo Club for several years and has received many awards in competitions. His photos have placed high in Fun Fest voting as well. His work will be on display through September 13th. Palm Garden Open House ThrivedDespite Tropical Storm Debby

The staff at Palm Garden of Sun City Center decided the show must go on with their Open House, “A Patriotic Celebration”, held on June 26th. Despite Tropical Storm Debby unleashing torrents of rain and gusty wind, determined residents of Sun City braved the weather to participate in the patriotic festivities. The Front Porch Pickers and singer Ellen Chandler entertained guests while they dined on All-American fare and drinks. The Supervisor of Elections office was on hand to provide on-site registration or updating for the voters in the crowd.Palm Garden would like to extend a

special thank you to Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham, Dana Dittmar of the Sun City Area Chamber of Commerce, and the many Sun City Center residents who came out for braving the weather to attend this fun event.

Members and friends of the GFWC SCC Woman’s Club are playing Bunco from 9 a.m. to noon on the 4th Wednesday of every month in the Sandpiper Room. Bunco is a dice game that is easy to learn and fun to play. The Woman’s Club meets from September through May, and the Bunco group provides a great opportunity for people to get to know each other better and have a good time year round. Bernadette Mueller is Artist of the MonthKings Point Art League’s “Artist of the Month” for the month of

August is Bernadette Mueller. Bernadette lived in N. Olmsted, Ohio before moving to Kings Point in 2000. She had four children, and was a stay at home Mom during their young growing years. She then managed a dental office until she retired in 1989. Having majored in art in High School, she decided to take some watercolor classes held at night at the local High School, and was immediately enchanted with the medium. Watercolor is still her medium of choice, but she also likes to work in colored pencil. She gradually increased her involvement in art and became a member of The Westlake Watercolor Society, The Lakewood Art League, and The Cuyahoga Falls Art Society. It gave her the opportunity to take classes and workshops with a variety of artists, many of them known nationally. These days she likes to experiment with watercolor and colored pencil on surfaces other than paper, yupo, aquaboard and masa being some. The last few months, she has been working with watercolor on canvas. It has been both challenging and frustrating, but fun and a growing experience for her art.You will be able to enjoy Bernadette’s beautiful watercolors during

the month of August, beginning August 4th - September 1st. Make it a point to stop by the window at the Art Room in the North Clubhouse and admire her colorful artwork.
