All adults at some time in their youth had some individual or an event that perked their interest and influenced them to pursue a career in a chosen field. It may have been a teacher in school who conducted a lab experiment that led a student to be interested in medicine or science. Perhaps it was an airline pilot who was a friend of their parents who sparked an interest in aviation, or a veterinarian who saved the life of a child’s pet that created an interest in animal agriculture. Often it is not possible to recall any one person or single event that leads to the development of an interest in a particular field – but always that person is held in high esteem and the event is positive. Young people are naturally idealistic and look for role models who reflect their own ideals. It behooves adults to consider their conduct at all times – you may affect the direction of someone’s life without even being aware you are a role model. Every profession, sport or other activity has individuals who excel and are looked up to as leaders in their chosen field. These are people who have the dedication to devote the required time at task to make the most of their natural talents, developing the skills necessary to allow them to reach the top of their profession. These individuals are today’s heroes. The Show Calf Industry is no exception. There are individuals in the industry that excel at dif-ferent levels of competition from the smallest County Fair to larger Major Shows. Who is to say that someone who shows only at County Fairs will serve as a role model less than someone who shows at Major Shows? All can have a positive effect on the lifetime interest of the people whose lives they touch.

I’ve been impressed with animal magic ever since an assembly in the second grade when a man brought his horse to our school. The man would rattle off a math problem such as, “What’s 6 plus 2 minus 3 plus 5 divided by 2?” And the horse would stamp the ground with his hoof five times and all us kids would stand there with our eyes wide open, very impressed! Naturally, we didn’t know if the horse was correct because we were not quite at the horse’s level in higher mathematics yet. The les-son the teachers were attempting to impart to us was that if a horse could figure out such a complex equation certainly there was hope for us kids. Although, that’s not the message I took away from the exercise. I remember my impression being that I didn’t need to learn math be-cause when I grew up I was going to have a horse. I just figured the horse was so smart because he never had to go to school and fill his brain with all sorts of useless stuff. Which bring me to my subject... idiotic pet tricks. I’ll admit that I am envious of anyone who can teach their pet to do tricks. Of course, I did finally grow up and get a horse but the only trick I was able to teach it was to sleep standing up. I bought a talking bird once who never spoke another word after it left the store and one of my dogs rolled over when I said “speak.” This was the same animal I taught to retrieve by throwing a red rubber ball in hopes it would be a bird dog. It might have worked out fine if I was shooting red rubber balls but this dog wouldn’t hunt. It was afraid of anything that had feathers and flew. I had high hopes of turning my last dog into a sheep-herding machine. I trained her as a pup on ducks, which is a common practice, and sure enough when Aussie got older she was a Grand Champion duck herder. But sheep intimidated her. The only trick my dog ever did was have puppies, which was quite a feat be-cause we thought we had her fixed! A person has to be really insecure to teach their pets stupid tricks just to impress their smug friends with

their overachieving pets. And for what? People get a watch dog and immediately teach it to shake hands, roll over and play dead. I submit that these are not admirable traits for a watch dog! Or, they teach a dog to beg. BIG DEAL! Begging comes naturally to most dogs anyway. Give me a dog who performs useful tricks: like fetching the neighbor’s newspaper on a Sunday morning. I’ll admit there was one dog that made me jealous of its owner. One day many years ago I was fixing fence with Todd, the manager of the ranch next door. It was a hot day and Todd asked if I wanted a beer. I answered in the affirmative, requesting my favorite brand, Coors. I swear on my honor Todd told his dog to go to the refrigerator and fetch me a Colorado Kool Aid. Mind you, I did not laugh because I already knew Todd’s dog could do things that I couldn’t, like catch a frisbee and scratch his head with his foot. But fetching a beer, now this would be a real trick indeed! Sure enough, Todd had taught his dog to go to a small refrigerator in an old dairy barn, open the door, grab a cold can without getting slobber on the top, and retrieve it. Please keep in mind that dogs are color blind and do not have opposable thumbs! This was the most useful dog I’d ever seen. “Surely” I said, “this is some kind of magic.” Nope. Todd asked what other kind of beer I wanted and I said that I’d have a Bud. I believe he would have re-trieved pretzels and beer nuts had I asked. The only beer that dog couldn’t come back with was a Mexican brand because Todd was all out and I doubt the liquor store would have sold the dog any without an ID. Maybe they would have, who knows? Being an amateur animal trainer myself, I thought I’d teach my pets a couple of these useful tricks to really impress my friends. An Egyptian princess who lived more than 3,500 years ago is the oldest known person to have had clogged arteries, dispelling the myth that heart disease is a product of modern society, anew study says. To determine how common heart disease was in ancient Egypt, scientists performed computer scans on 52 mummies in Cairo and the United States. Among those that still had heart tissue, 44 had chunks of calcium stuck to their arteries — indicating clogging.

“Atherosclerosis clearly existed more than 3,000 years ago,” said Adel Allam, a cardiologyprofessor at Al Azhar University in Cairo, who led the study with Gregory Thomas, director ofnuclear cardiology education at the University of California in Irvine. “We cannot blame thisdisease on modern civilization.” Allam and colleagues found the Egyptian princess Ahmose-Meryet-Amon, who lived in Thebes (now Luxor) between 1540 and 1550 B.C., had calcium deposits in two main coronary arteries, making her the oldest mummy found with heart disease. The princessʼ father and brother were both pharaohs. The mummy had pierced ears and a large incision in her left side made byembalmers to remove her internal organs.

Allam doubted she would have received much treatment beyond maybe taking special herbs or honey. “If she were my patient today, she would get open heart surgery,” he said. He added the princessʼ clogged arteries looked remarkably similar to heart disease in contemporaryEgyptians. The 43 younger mummies with calcium deposits showed a range of heart and arteryproblems.

Experts say that during the princessʼ lifetime, beef, pork, mutton, antelope, duck and othermeats were readily available in the royal courts. Egyptians didnʼt eat much fish but ate manydifferent kinds of fruits and vegetables. Salt was also likely used to preserve their food.

Joep Perk, a professor of health sciences at Linnaeus University in Sweden and a spokesmanfor the European Society of Cardiology, said the heart disease discovered in the mummies wasprobably due to the rich diet and lack of exercise among the Egyptian elite. He was not linked to the mummy research.

“The pharaohs and other royalty probably had more fat in their diet than the average Egyptian,” he said. “The sculptures and hieroglyphs may show people who were very thin and beautiful, but the reality may have been different.”

He added there may have been other factors, like the stress of holding onto power and genetic factors that could have made the Egyptian ruling class more susceptible to heart disease.The Egyptian royals were more likely to be killed by heart problems after surviving otherinfections that would have killed poorer Egyptians. “They simply had the good luck to live longenough to develop heart disease.”

Definitions of common terms need to be clarified in discussing the weight and valueof a carcass. Dressing percentage is the percent of a carcass as compared to the live weight ofthe animal. Dressing percentage is part of the equation used in determining yield grade,with the lower number (yield grade 1) having the highest percentage of red meat. Carcass weight is determined by live weight minus offal (hide, head, hoof, andentrails). Other factors that negatively influence dressing percentage are gut fill, amountof bone, horns, abscesses, bruises and mud on the hide. Hide weight also varies by breed. Fat thickness, on the outside of a carcass, reduces red meat exposure to air and is included in the weight of the carcass. Kidney fat (body cavity) decreases the percentage of edible product. Packers buy cattle on the rail, with prices based on the weight of a carcass. Whenselling, it is important to know if carcasses are being weighed hot or cold as there is cooler shrinkage. Cooler shrinkage is the amount of water lost from a carcass the first 24-48 hours after harvest. Percentage of shrinkage is the difference in pounds lost between hot and cold carcass weight. Red meat is made up mostly of water, ranging from 70 to 75 percent. A percentageof this water can evaporate, resulting in loss of carcass weight. External fat thicknesscovering the carcass greatly reduces cooler shrinkage. Carcasses with a thin covering offat (blue carcass) will have greater exposure to air and therefore increased shrinkage. Conditions in the cooler also influence the rate of evaporation from the carcass. Theprocessorʼs goal is to maximize the cooling rate and minimize cooler shrinkage. Spraychilling, intermittently spraying the carcass with cold water, during the first 48 hours,decreases the amount of shrinkage. In addition, less air movement, carcass spacing, andhumidity can keep shrinkage below one percent. Packing plants without spray chilling andwith stronger air movement can have increased shrinkage up to five percent. Producers, paid on cold carcass weight, should consider pricing the product at threepercent higher to compensate for cooler shrinkage from the hot carcass weight.

Sheep and goats, normally without thick outside fat covering the carcass, can expectup to a 10 percent cooler shrinkage. Poultry (chickens/turkeys) are routinely soaked intubs of ice water and covered with chipped ice for several hours to increase the weight of the product by water absorption. While the industry average is five percent, it can be as high as eight percent. The amount of water added to poultry is required to be listed on the packaging of the product. Being familiar with the meaning of the terms buyers, sellers, and producers use,gives a better understanding of the entire meat industry.

United Egg Producers announced an unprecedented agreement with HSUS to work together toward the enactment of comprehensive new Federal legislations for all 280 million hens involved in U.S. egg production.

The proposed standards advocated by HSUS would be the first federal law addressing treatment of animals on farms.

The National Pork Producers Council said, if enacted, would set a dangerous precedent for allowing the federal government to dictate how livestock and poultry producers care for their animals.

A federal law would have no measurable benefit to public or animal health, could raise retail prices and could have the unintended consequence of forcing production to a foreign country.

Farm Bureau is also opposed to federal legislation standards, preferring that care standards be based on science. If enacted egg producers will have to invest $4 billion to effect an industry-wide makeover.

HSUS is a non-profit organization, that hides behind animal welfare to promote its real agenda, to eliminate animal agriculture. Less than 5% of contributions is used for actual care of animals. Most is spent on salaries, lobbying and fund raising.

A national spokesman for HSUS was allowed to address members attending the 4-H Leadership Conference last year.

Pending lawsuits in Oregon and Washington state by HSUS and PETA were dropped following this agreement. This follows standard procedure by HSUS and PETA against production agriculture organizations to coerce them to accept their demands. The threat and cost of a lawsuit goes beyond coercion, it is legal blackmail.

Viewing Calves in a PastureCattle have a herd instinct and this can be used to an advantage when looking for show prospects in an open pasture setting.

The herd should always be approached head on. If approached from the side, cattle will move away in a group. Approaching near the center or a point with fewer cattle will divide the herd and neither group will want to leave the other. If more than one person is present, stay together and cows will consider the people as one entity.

It is important for the cattle to remain calm and unthreatened. Refrain from eye contact with cows. Because hand and arm movement will appear threatening, keep your hands at your side or in your pockets. Slowly work your way through the herd so calves can be accurately evaluated.

For five full years now I’ve been her sage and Santa Claus and pal and playmate and mother and friend. Now she’ll learn to share her worship with her teachers ...which is only right. But no longer will I be the smartest woman in the whole world. Today when that school bell rings for the first time...she’ll learn what it means to be a member of the group...with all its privileges and its disadvantages too.

She’ll learn in time that proper young ladies do not laugh out loud...or kiss dogs...or keep frogs in pickle jars in bedrooms...or even watch ants scurry across cracks in sidewalks in the summer.

Today she’ll learn for the first time that all who smile at her are not her friends. And I’ll stand on the front porch and watch her start out on the long, lonely journey to becoming a woman.

So, world, I bequeath to you today one little girl...in a crispy dress...with two brown eyes...and a flash of light brown hair that bounces in the sunlight when she runs.

I trust you’ll treat her well.

Viewing Calves in a PastureCattle have a herd instinct and this can be used to an advantage when looking for show prospects in an open pasture setting.

The herd should always be approached head on. If approached from the side, cattle will move away in a group. Approaching near the center or a point with fewer cattle will divide the herd and neither group will want to leave the other. If more than one person is present, stay together and cows will consider the people as one entity.

It is important for the cattle to remain calm and unthreatened. Refrain from eye contact with cows. Because hand and arm movement will appear threatening, keep your hands at your side or in your pockets. Slowly work your way through the herd so calves can be accurately evaluated.

While a fl at tire is aggrivating, nothing is more frustrating than a lug nut that just won’t budge. Tire shops often use an impact wrench when mounting a wheel with little regard as to how someone else will get it off. A breaker bar (pipe used as extension) is often a solution. Lacking this, a jack can be used to provide greater force to your 4-way wrench to reverse the lug nut.

Remember turning right is tight - left is loose.

You have no doubt heard the statement that “a watched pot will never boil?” Well, I am here to tell you that a watched cow will never calve! I developed this theory observing a heifer that fell in love with the wrong bull. She was supposed to be bred by my junior herd sire, a bull so thin he can’t cast a shadow. The bull of unknown origin looks like he was weaned on a pickle and the best description of him that I can think of is he looks like an old cow hide draped over the top wire of a barb wire fence. His hide flaps on his bones like a quilt hung over a fence. But no, the heifer could never fall in love with the easy calving bull so that we could all sleep easy. At just ten months of age she had to break through three fences to become intimate with a bull so big he could shade an elephant. The senior herd sire’s feet are bigger than a loading chute and I swear he must have had ticks on him bigger than his young love interest. The day this muscle bound bull was born surely the earth shook. I basically had three options. I could have abort-ed the heifer, or I could have sold her to an unsuspecting neighbor. But since she was carrying my return address, a big brand, I decided to take my chances and hope she was too young to get bred by the brute of a bull. My third option, therefore, was to do nothing, which, it just so hap-pens, I am exceedingly good at. We were doubly surprised a couple months later when we were measuring the replacement heifer’s pelvic areas. The first shocker was that the heifer had the small-est pelvic area and the second surprise was that, yes, she was in face bred. So, we named her Patience, for reasons that will soon become apparent. Then we watched and we waited. Several times I would wake in the middle of the night to go check her. I had permanent rings around my eyeballs from the binoculars from watching her from afar so I wouldn’t disturb her. Her every movement was a sign to

me that parturition was approaching. “Is she swelling up? Is her bag getting bigger? Is she walking the fence?” “No,” my wife would respond, “she is chewing her cud with not a worry in the world.” We would sit for hours in the truck watching and waiting. “My patience is growing thin,” I told my wife. “It’s worse than sitting in the car waiting for you to get dressed and put on your make-up when we are trying to go out.” “Why don’t you do what you do when you are wait-ing on me,” she answered. “What’s that?” I asked. “Go ahead, honk the horn. I’m sure it will work.” Then one day we were watching Patience patiently when I noticed something different about her. “Do you no-tice she is not as fat?” I asked my wife. “And is that milk dripping from her canteen? Patience has had a calf!” I yelled. “You were expecting puppies?” my wife replied mockingly. Sure enough, Patience had miraculously given birth to a healthy calf that already looked big enough for the weaning pen. I marveled at the size of the calf, “Pa-tience giving birth to that big calf reminds me of the time two of us had to carry a painfully heavy slate pool table down two flights of stairs, around two extremely tight cor-ners and then through a narrow passageway.” “Yeah, and you weren’t very patient with me then either,” my wife accurately recalled. “After all our worrying maybe I should have known that cows are just like people and they have an inborn in-stinct for selecting the right individual to mate with.” My wife looked at me in a disgusted manner and sarcastically said, “No, I’m very sad to say that not all of us are always that smart.”

CROP PRACTICES ARE BOOSTING HERBICIDE RESISTANCE IN WEEDSThe battle against a growing population of herbicide-resistant weeds could be a los-ing one. Within the past two years, weed scientists have confirmed fields with com-mon waterhemp and ragweed that do not respond to glyphosate in Iowa, although problems were rumored for years before that. To date, glyphosate resistance has been confirmed in 12 weed species in North America, with glyphosate-resistant weed populations identified in 25 states.

However, weed resistance isn’t new, and it isn’t limited just to glyphosate. There are 18 different types of herbicide-resis-tant weeds in Iowa, according to the In-ternational Survey of Herbicide Resistant Weeds.

It could be the development of resistance, or it could be weed shifts-something (the herbicide) never controlled in the first place.

The repeated, widespread use of glypho-sate makes it likely the problem will only get worse over time.

Resistant populations tend to grow on a logarithmic scale, growing at a low level then exploding all at once. It may seem like resistant weeds are a new problem, but they probably have been in the field for a few years.

Adding to the challenge are an increasing number of weeds that are resistant to mul-tiple herbicides. For example, waterhemp in Iowa and Illinois has shown resistance to triazine herbicides, ALS inhibitors, PPO inhibitors, glyphosate and HPPD herbi-cides.

In cases where resistance already exists, the way to manage the problem depends on the situation. In corn, there are still some options available: however, soy-beans can be more difficult, especially post-emergence, as a lot of glyphosate-

resistant weed species are resistant to other herbicides as well.

The best hope for managing resistant weed populations is for growers to scout their fields and adopt integrated management practices- rotating herbicide modes of action as well as focusing on herbicide efficacy, persistence and frequency of application. Agronomic practices such as crop rotation and tillage can also decrease herbicide selection intensity.

Growers are beginning to see the advantages of starting out with a pre-plant residual her-bicide, while others view as an unnecessary expense. Applying a residual gives better control, and whether it is measured or not, there are probably better yields because of elimination of early weed competition.

It’s important to know what herbicides are in-cluded in the products used to control weeds. Products labeled with a variety of names and formulations often have the same mechanism of action.

Most pre-mixes include an ALS-inhibitor that doesn’t help at all because all the waterhemp in the Midwest is ALS-resistant.

To eliminate resistance, you need redundan-cy. You need two mechanisms of action to control waterhemp.

Maintaining the effectiveness of current her-bicides is critical because there are no new mechanisms of action on the horizon.

111th American Royal Livestock ShowAmerican Royal officials announce an expanded schedule for the 111th Livestock Show to be held Oct.22 through Oct. 31, 2010.

With the rising number of exhibitors attending and animals exhibited at the Livestock Show each year it was necessary to find a bit more breathing room. Therefore, the show has been expanded to include two weekends of livestock excitement. With this expansion comes the opportunity to add a few new shows as well.

The junior market shows which include: steers, hogs, lambs and goats; will be held on the first weekend, Oct. 22 – Oct. 24 with the Junior Premium Livestock Auction on Sunday, Oct. 24. Also included in the first weekend will be the return of a Pedigreed Breeding Gilt Show, the All Breed Fancy Heifer & Prospect Steer Show & Sale, as well as the following breeding cattle open shows:Gelbvieh, Salers, American Lowline, Braunvieh and, new this year, Miniature Herefords.

We have added two Boer Goat Shows to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 26 and Wednesday, Oct. 27. The second weekend, beginning on Thursday, Oct. 28 will include another great line up of breeding cattle open and junior shows: Angus, Limousin, Maine-Anjou, Shorthorn and Simmental. The American Royal will host the National Shows for the Charolais and Hereford breeds in 2010.The Livestock Show will culminate this year with the Supreme Junior Heifer Show. Each breed champion competing receives a $500 scholarship and the Supreme Heifer is awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Stanley E. Stout Memorial Scholarship Fund. True to the purpose of the American Royal several other scholarships for junior exhibitors are available relative to theiractivities at the show. They are listed in detail on the American Royal website.

There will be numerous breeding cattle auctions held throughout the week. A detailed schedule as well as the entire premium book, entry form and DNA kit order forms are posted online at www.americanroyal.com. DNA deadline is Aug.1 and the entry deadline is Sept.10, 2010.
