Update on the Leawood Lions’ Hunger Initiative. In late 2008 National Organizations reported a substantial increase in requests for food assistance. Local Food Pantries were facing special difficulty from greatly increased demand for their help and/or depletion of resources.

Our Response to this crisis affecting local families was the Leawood Lions Club Hunger Initiative to provide meaningful assistance to local area food pantries.

In December 2008, the Leawood Lions Foundation distributed gifts of $400 each to thirteen food pantries serving the needy in Johnson and Wyandotte Counties. The Leawood Lions Club issued a challenge to other Lions Clubs and civic groups to provide donations to individual pantries. The Leawood Lions Foundation provided an additional $2,600.00 to help those 13 food pantries during the spring 2009. In January 2010, the Leawood Lions and the Leawood Lions Foundation authorized an additional contribution of $200 to each of those food pantries ($2,600 total). Most recently, in May 2010, the Leawood Lions and the Leawood Lions Foundation authorized another additional contribution of $200 to each of those food pantries ($2,600 total). (See the attached thank you note from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.) With this recent contribution, the total contributions since the project started in December 2008 is $13,000 ($1,000 for each pantry). We have supplemented our collective contributions with an Individual Food Contribution Initiative. Each Leawood Lion is asked to bring one food item for each member of their household to each of our meetings. These items are then distributed by Lion Dale Curtin and other members of the Benevolent Committee to the food pantries we are working with.

July 3, ZALA

Dear Mr. Curtin:

Thank you very much for bringing the Leawood Lions Club contributions to thePantry at St. Paul's! They are deeply appreciated,

You asked at that time I send some materials, so I am pleased to do sol

St Paul's Episcopal Church is located in the middle of the two poorest ZIP codes inKansas! Since it's founding in 1857, over L50 years ago, St. Paul's has been feedingits neighbors, beginning with Indians living in the area. The Pantry as we know itbegan forty years ago and two years ago moved to the larger space we occupy at thenorth end of the lower level, under the high Altar, just in time for the recession!

The need has not diminished, In fact we see it increasing every year. With an agingcongregation, however, we depend very much on the generosity of persons likeyourself and your group, living in suburban areas, to keep this work going'

Each household that qualifies may come monthly, We feed approximately 800-1000persons per month, We give both commodities, originating with the U,S.

government, and other food obtained through Harvesters and through directdonations.

The Breakfast, offered free every Saturday morning at 9:30AM for the last L3 years,

was begun here by members of St. Michael and All Angels Church at 67OA Mission

Road. Now volunteers come from all over Kansas City to help each week. Persons

interested in donating to the Breakfast or volunteering with it should contact Miss

]ulie Marcus at 9L3-46t-7733. Volunteers interested in the Pantry may contact ourvolunteer coordinator, Kim Palmer at 913- 321-3535. Our volunteers discover a

fulfilling experience here, Over 600 volunteer hours are given monthly! These

feeding ministries at St. Paul's are part of the Hunger Relief Network of EpiscopalCommunity Services in Kansas City,

Please let me know if there are any questions, or if your group would be interestedin coming for a tour.

Again, thankyou very much for your kind generosityl
