    Cool Cities Delaware is a

    state-wide volunteer effortthat encourages localgovernments adopt energysustainability,environmental stewardshipand climate protectionpolicies and programs.

    Sustainable Delaware 2010 Conference

    The 5th annual Sustainable Delaware conferenceorganized by the Delaware Chapter of The AmericanInstitute of Architects in cooperation with the Sierra Clubof Delaware Cool Cities Program is scheduled forSeptember 22nd in Lewes and September 24th inNewark.

    This conference isthe only Delawareevent to holisticallyconsider the three-legged stool ofsustainability: landuse pattern reform,renewable energyand energyefficiency.

    Those ofprominence whowill speak at theconference includeGovernor JackMarkell, DNRECSecretary CollinOMara andSenator Harris

    McDowell.

    Delaware Nature Society, City of Newark, and the National Trust for HistoricPreservation insure a well-rounded event that delves into the themes of environmentalurbanism, historic preservation, environmental protection, energy sustainability andpublic policy. Special attention is paid to designing walk-able, healthy, and sustainablecommunities for all age groups, as essential to carbon-neutral design, Americasobesity epidemic and Aging in Place for seniors.

    Next Planning Meeting, Thursday Sept. 9th

    Please join us on September 9th at 7 pm at the WestminsterRetirement Center located at 191 Westminster Drive in Dover,Delaware.

    This planning meeting will discuss the Sustainable DelawareConference, as well as outreach efforts to promote the U.S.Mayors Climate Protection Agreement and U.S. Counties ClimateStabilization Declaration at the local government level in Delawareand to insure citizen participation.

    87 Million Benefit from U.S. Mayors Climate Protection

    Agreement Nationwide

    An article by United Press International (Aug 17) reports that the mayors of U.S. citiesrepresenting 87 million residents have endorsed the U.S. Mayors Climate ProtectionAgreement to date.

    At a seminar for the U.S. Conference of Mayors held this month, Gavin Newsom, themayor of San Francisco, said of his own city that ... energy efficiency projects createand sustain green jobs, save people money on their utility bills, and cut the city'scarbon emissions by more than 3,000 tons a year."

    Of Delawares 57 villages, towns and cities, 4 have signed on to the U.S. MayorsClimate Protection Agreement. These are the cities of Wilmington, Dover, Newarkand Lewes. The Sierra Club of Delawares Cool Cities Program is committed toencouraging all of Delawares local governments to adopt energy sustainability,environmental stewardship and climate protection policies and programs.
