Forest and Birds mandate is to rotect all native secies onland and at sea. Did yo know that domestic cats consmemore sea fish in etfood than all the worlds seals combinedand that over 50 marine fish are caht for fishmeal to rearone commercial salmon (EWT, 14 May 07)? The worldsoceans are hastily slidin into a new era. unsstainablefishin, olltion, and other hman imacts are deletinor sea life. Accordin to the uNs Food and AricltreOranisation, the demand for fish within the last five decadeshas risen at twice the rate of hman olation rowth.

polat ionc o l l a s e sof all majorr e m a i n i n secies coldoccr within40 years! It isan old myth that the seas bonty is infinite. Environmentalactivists illstrate the redicament with some soberinanaloies. A sokeserson for Sea Sheherd stated that therincial marine redators on earth are now cattle, withover half the lobal fish catch servin as feed for domesticlivestock. Nations arond the world are beinnin to realise

that rent action is needed to rotect the oceans resorces.A uN general Assembly resoltion was assed in December2006 to redce hih seas bottom-trawlin beyond national jrisdictions. In a more recent ste, more than 20 nationsareed to discorae nrelated and destrctive bottom-trawlin in the Soth pacific. The areement will take effecton 30 Setember and shold halt any frther exloitationof dee-sea fana ntil 2010. After this eriod a vessel canfish in a new area only after the contry has condcted ascientifically acceted imact assessment so as to ensrethat no sinificant adverse imacts on vlnerable marineecosystems occr.

Tuff crater plantingwas really tough!Snday the 10th of Jne saw or annal plantin Day at Tff Crater. This year we were assisted by Te Nahere who oranised the selectionof lants, laid them ot, and came on the day to hel s lant.Throh the NSCC we were iven lots of mlch and this was sreadbefore the lantin day so or lants have more of a chance to srvivein a somewhat harsh environment. [Mulch inhibits the sprouting ofweeds Ed.]

We laced the lants on the reserve down by the water some in acomletely new area and some a relantin of the area we coveredlast year.

Or thanks to all the eole adlts and children who trned ot inthe orin rain to t in an hor of diin and lantin. By the endof the mornin the area was lookin reat and, desite the weather, everyone osed for a hoto and seemed hay with the reslt. Aftera hot drink and a sizzlin sasae slied by the Concil, it was timeto head home for a well-deserved hot shower!

Forest and Bird has been fortnate to be iven a he ile of mlchin an area above the ond which needs relantin, so Romily and Ihave been sreadin the mlch and ttin in trees. Anyone who hastime or inclination cold ive me a rin on 480 5570 so some morelantin can be done.

It was a cold, dam day bt over 50 hearts with sades clbbedtoether. Diamonds all. What a ack of workers! Not a card ame btthe annal lantin at Tff Crater across the stream from the motorway. The fence does hide what was achieved alon the bank, bt it alsoave some shelter to hman and lant. Thoh the mayor was not

there, some Concil staff were, led by Anela, friend of all volnteers. They were sorted by reresentatives from ARC and DOC, as wellas Branch birders incldin a continent from KCC and secial estsNeil and Sheryl.

Another 1,000 lants in a bed of thick mlch, all rovided by theConcil. More family for Anne and Romily to nrtre and to rotectfrom weeds and rashly driven mowers.

Bt ors is not the only lantin Concil is sortin. Note some ofthe other laces and dates in Whats On (inside yor wraer) if yomissed ors; yo may be able to hel elsewhere.

Are we makin a difference to or city? Certainly by the nmberslanted every year, bt invasive lants, blldozers, secret oisoners and

those who erceive land as sites for bildin are constantly diminishinor rban veetation. As mch of the citys native veetation is inrivate hands, erhas Concil can consider ways to sort residentsto maintain what we already have. Environmental rotection reqiresfndin as well as new lantin. Check yor local Concil candidatefor their views.

Le Roys Bus a real gemLe Roys Bsh is a em in the heart of Birkenhead forthose who havent exlored this delihtfl reserve;its well worth a visit!

A ro of local residents maintain the reservein artnershi with the North Shore City Concil.Several of these residents form the extremely ro-

active and dedicated manaement committee (allForest & Bird members). Relar workin bees areheld to tend the bsh, bt the ro have onoinconcerns abot invasive creeers and other weedsthat are smotherin and killin ona, totara, kariand other native secies. The committee has jstachieved a major ste in winnin an award fromthe Ackland Reional Concils CEF fnd. Thisis a rant of $18,000 to hel eliminate willows, wattles and amas rass which are re-invadin theLittle Shoal Bay wetland and threatenin to chokethe waterways. part of this rant will ay for acontractor to start work on the willows this comin

srin. The committee will then monitor the areaand lant natives to redce the risk of re-rowth.

Paying our way in the world a quick look at an easy way

to do your bit by reducing your grubby carbon footprint

Overwhelmin scientific evidence sorts the conclsion that the observedchanes in the lobal climate are, in lare art, de to hman activities.Activities sch as transort and electricity eneration which brn lare amontsof fossil fels have released nnatrally hih concentrations of carbon into theatmoshere, in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This as ersistsin the atmoshere, train warmth that shold otherwise have dissiatedot into sace. This is termed the greenhouse effect, whereas the heatin-rocess is called global warming, and the overall effect is known as climatechange. While the reenhose effect itself is a natral henomenon and isnecessary to sstain life on earth, hman-indced increases are threatenin thedelicate balance. As hman activity increases, reenhose ases are bildin and train more heat.

As a reslt of climate chane, extreme weather events sch as drohts, storms

and floods are occrrin more freqently. There ndobtedly will also be majoreconomic, social, and environmental effects as direct and indirect reslts ofclimate chane. These will affect yo and yor home, bsiness or worklaceone way or another. We can all contribte to lessenin the extreme effects byredcin the amont of CO2 (and other reenhose ases) bein released intothe atmoshere, and by comensatin for excess CO2 in the atmoshere bysortin rojects that enerate carbon credits. The cost of combatin climatechane now is cheaer than doin nothin, and then ayin for the costs ofadatation later on.

One otion is the carboNZero roramme rn by Landcare Research. If yovisit the website (www.carbonzero.co.nz) yo will find a ser-friendly carbonfootrint calclator which lets yo work ot the amont of yor hoseholdsCO2 emissions. It offers sestions for redcin these emissions, which can

hel redce yor enery bills as well as yor imact on the environment!

Yo can also offset yor remainin emissions by rchasin carbon creditsonline, esecially for activities like air travel! This is a roramme which sholdbe taken by every home and every bsiness, however lare or small.

Somethin else was the Live Earth concert (www.liveearth.or) which tooklace on 7 Jly. This has been rn in association with Al gore, athor of AnInconvenient Truth, with the aim of drawin attention to lobal warmin. Theirwebsite incldes another carbon footrint calclator.
