A Universal Message

(20
th
Ordinary Sunday: Isaiah 56:17; Romans 11:13
32; Matthew 15:2128)

For reasons that are not immediately clear, Jesus’
mission did not include the gentiles, though he did
respond to the prayer of a Roman Centurion (Matthew 8:5
13) and, in today’s Gospel, a Canaanite woman.

Earlier, when he sent the Twelve on their first missionary
experience, he instructed them, “Do not go into pagan
territory or enter a Samaritan town. Go rather to the lost
sheep of the house of Israel.” Only at the end of
Matthew’s Gospel did he give them the command: “Go,
make disciples of all nations.”

Over time, and after many persecutions, the Psalmist’s
prayer, “May all the peoples praise you,” was heard. In
every nation today, there are at least some persons who
fulfill Isaiah’s prophecy, “Them I will bring to my holy
mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer.”

Universality (being inclusive) is a challenge, however.
There is a tendency in every group toward a certain
exclusivity. In today’s Gospel the disciples want Jesus to
do whatever it takes to make the Canaanite woman go
away, not only, perhaps, because she is a gentile but also
because she is a nuisance.

Have you ever found yourself trying to avoid
uncomfortable situations, difficult people, unwanted
appeals from someone in need, etc., etc.? It can be hard
to maintain the inclusive spirit that is inherent in our
mission of Reconciliation.

St. Paul had in his day tried to exclude Christians from
Judaism. Then, some early Jewish Christians wanted to
exclude gentiles. Now Paul longs to bring the salvation of
Christ to the Jews as he has to the gentiles.

This vision is echoed in the closing words of Mary’s
message at La Salette, “You will make this known to all
my people.” Today there are La Salette missions in 27
countries (and we continue to discover small La Salette
shrines in other places), but that leaves us with well over
150 countries where La Salette is unknown. Compared to
the spread of the Gospel, we have a long way to go!

The message has many elements, attracting different
persons in different ways. This is true also of us
messengers, individually unique but, together, universal.

Pray for Our Nation
Difficult times call God’s faithful to
more frequent and diligent prayer. In
these days of protests, riots,
pandemics, and social unrest we will
gather to pray the Rosary and Divine
Mercy Chaplet monthly to invoke His
Holy Will for ourselves and our families, our loved ones,
our government, our medicine, our laws, and our Church.
May God in His Mercy protect us and keep us faithful to
the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Please join us after 5:30
PM Mass in the St. Joseph Chapel on the first Saturday of
the month. For more information, please contact Deacon
Paul Robison at 7134161585.
Men’s Ministry Challenge to Honor Father Moe
As you know, Mary Queen has established a Memorial
Fund to honor Father Moe Linehan’s life. Gifts to this fund
are used for a technology ministry to reach out to people
in our own parish and beyond, by livestreaming Masses,
Holy Hours or other opportunities of prayer to help us
focus on what is central in our faith and formation. All
gifts received to this Memorial Fund in August and
September will be matched dollar for dollar (up to
$15,000) by the Men’s Ministry. Please take advantage
of this opportunity to double the impact of your donations.
We invite you to make a gift to the Father Moe Memorial
Fund which will honor his legacy, as well as share in our
important Mary Queen Ministry of evangelization and
pastoral outreach through today’s technology.

Mary Queen will now be offering Baptism Preparation
classes online. For more information on how to sign up for
a class or information on having your child baptized,
please contact Anita Shorosky at 2814821391 ext. 310
or [email protected].
Weekend Mass Worship Aids
In an effort to help minimize exposure, we shall refrain
from using the hymnals, until further notice. Please visit
Mary Queen’s website, app or Facebook page to
download the worship aid for each Mass. You will be able
to utilize your mobile device, computer or tablet to sing
praise and thanksgiving during Mass. This will be
especially beneficial for those who are participating via the
streamed Mass.

Food Pantry Volunteers Needed
The Food Pantry is in need of volunteers on a substitute
basis. The Pantry changed procedures in midMarch, to
ensure the safety of volunteers and clients. The
scheduled pantry volunteers are down to the bare
minimum and when one is not available on a given day, it
causes a hardship for the entire group. Substitute
volunteers are needed to help during these times, to keep
everything running smoothly. All volunteers are required
to wear a mask and social distance while working in the
pantry. If you are interested in volunteering in the pantry
as a substitute, please contact Chris Austgen at 281482
1391 or [email protected].

Spiritual Act of Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy
Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to
receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into
my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and
unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be
separated from You. Amen.

th
Sunday in Ordinary Time
We are hardwired for wholeness and crave it. When
something is broken, we want it fixed. If a part of our body
is not working properly, we want it healed. How often do
we find ourselves saying, “I’m tired of struggling with this
cold, I can’t wait for my surgery to heal, or I want my
treatments to make me better.” Wholeness and healing
restore our relationships and make us free to love as we
desire. We know very well how our limitations,
imperfections, and brokenness really limit us. They can
easily prevent us from being and doing what we want to
do.

Our physical and emotional wounds and maladies are
easier to identify. If my back hurts, I feel it and know what
part of my body needs attention. If I am feeling intense
anger, I can identify the emotion and take necessary steps
to uncover its cause. Being persistent often brings greater
and quicker results. But will pursuing and even achieving
our physical and emotional healings really be enough?
We forget that there is a deeper healing that we seek and
desperately need. As we look around at humanity, there
are some physical and emotional wounds and scars that
cannot be made whole. They are limitations that must
remain and, for one reason or another, cannot be
rectified. Does this mean that the wholeness and healing
that my being longs for is not possible for me? Must I
settle with less than what God promises?

The answer is no. Ultimately, there is a desire that goes
deeper than the physical and emotional. It is a desire that
resides in our soul. What we really seek and thirst for is
healing and wholeness for our soul. Inner strength,
conviction, focus, grounding, love, hope, faith, courage,
determination, peace, and connectedness are all words
that center us on eternity. They direct us to a presence we
discover in our core, which is none other than the
presence of God. In God, we are healed. When we are
persistent in reaching out to and establishing our
relationship with God, real healing and wholeness begin
to happen.

There are some limitations and some of our brokenness
with which we may simply have to live. This does not
mean that we have to abandon our journey to wholeness
and healing. If we have done our inner soul work, we have
worked toward and acquired what and who we ultimately
need and desire. ©LPi

Consecration to Jesus through Mary

This year we are trying ZOOM classes for anyone who
desires to begin or renew this personal consecration
process with the support of others.

Souls consecrated to our Holy Mother are under her
protection and receive great graces in special ways. She
takes us closer to Jesus then we ever could get on our
own. The Total Consecration founded in the 18th
century by Saint Louis Marie de Montfort is the most
complete and most perfect consecration formula to Jesus.
It is the formula personally made, lived and recommended
by Pope Saint John Paul II.

Consumer Alert: Scammers Impersonating
Pastors to Solicit Gift Cards
Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a consumer alert
regarding persons alleging to be priests or pastors,
texting members of the church and asking them to buy
gift cards for a false charitable cause.

Texans have received deceptive texts from people
pretending to be pastors, then requesting that they
purchase a gift card and send them the information to
access that card. The scammers claim these cards are
needed for some charitable reason, but insist they cannot
pick up a gift card themselves and the purchaser will be
reimbursed. All Texans should be aware of unsolicited
calls and texts from scammers impersonating leaders of
the church. We believe that the scammers are using
information found on churches’ websites or bulletins.
Churches throughout Texas have seen reports of this
scam.

The Challenge of Stewardship

Every day we are called by Christ to respond in some
way. The more practice we have at giving of ourselves
freely and living in His presence, the easier it is to
discern that call. Once we hear the call, the choice is
ours: will we respond with yes or no? We could say that
we are not required to say yes because God has given
us free will. However, our response speaks much to
where we are in our maturity of faith. When we were
children, the word “no” used to be one of our favorites. If
we continue to say that as we get older, well, that says
something about where we are in our walk with the Lord.
If we truly are disciples of Jesus Christ and are serious
about growing in our faith, we will say “yes.” We are not
required to say yes, but we say yes because that is who
we have become.

This is the challenge of a stewardship way of life. Have
we matured enough to say yes when God calls,
regardless of how much our answer may cost us? What
matters more to us: what it will cost us or our relationship
with Jesus? Some days we will easily be able to say yes.
The grace and love he gives us will be plenty to see us
through whatever situation in which we find ourselves.
However, we are imperfect beings and there will be days
when we are more into ourselves than him. It is on those
days that we find ourselves at a true crossroads of a
challenge. The choice is always ours. Hopefully, our faith
will be strong enough. His call is never for his own sake.
He calls us because the world he created and the Church
he instituted need us. They wait just as he does for our
response. Tracy Earl Welliver ©LPi
