Other benefits of the new ED include larger, more comfortable waiting areas with more seating, car parking close to the ED and improved pedestrian and wheelchair access via an undercover walkway. A patient drop off zone and disabled parking spaces are conveniently located at the entry to the Emergency Department.

The new building is also the new Main Entry for Gladstone Hospital. Below is a detailed description and map explaining changed access points to Gladstone Hospital.

TWO LOCAL CHARITIES WHO SAY THEY’VE SEEN AN INCREASE IN FAMILY VIOLENCE CASES SINCE THE ONSET OFCOVID-19, ARE NOW BETTER EQUIPPED TO TACKLE THE SCOURGE WITH CRITICAL FUNDING FROM GLADSTONE PORTS CORPORATION (GPC).

As part of GPC’s Community Investment Program (CIP), the two groups in the region will receive a share in $19,700 worth of funding to continue crucial community projects to end family and domestic violence.

Volunteers at Gladstone’s Coordinated Community Response to Domestic and Family Violence (CCRDFV) and Bundaberg’s EDON Place Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Centre have been working tirelessly during the health crisis to keep families safe.

EDON Place Service Director Lyne Booth said the Bundaberg centre has been providing essential items such as toiletries, food and clothing as well as rental support to regional, rural and remote victims.

“Between March and July this year we have noticed an increase in the number of clients seeking assistance and support compared to last year,” Ms Booth said.

VITAL FUNDING TO END“The spike in the number of police referrals we have received, we believe, is partly due to the fact that families have had to stay at home which has put more pressure on families,” she said.

“We’re extremely grateful for the sponsorship from GPC and we will now be able to host information sessions in the community to raise awareness and prevent domestic and family violence from happening.”

In Gladstone, CCRDFV’s RUBY program will receive $5,200 worth of funding while their My Safety Steps Initiative will receive a healthy $8,000 boost.

CCRDFV president Sergeant Vicki Dredge said the funding has come at an important time when families are at their most vulnerable.

“In particular our program My Safety Steps, - there’s not really a resource for children aged zero to 6six, it’s designed for little people to understand danger,” Sgt Dredge said.

“In conjunction with our other programs it hasn’t been funded as much as we’d like but we can make it a priority now with support from GPC,”

“It’s absolutely critical to have funding at this point in time.”

People, Community and Sustainability

General Manager Rowen Winsor said COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on family violence numbers in regional communities like Bundaberg and Gladstone.

“We’ve identified these groups as being a high- priority during the health crisis, and the funding will go towards providing more support and resources to end the scourge in our community,” Ms Winsor said.

“There’s no place for domestic violence in our community,” she said.

Last month, the Gladstone Women’s Health Centre also received funding to launch a Gladstone first DV program as part of GPC’s Community Investment Program (CIP).

OUTDOOR CINEMAAt 4 metres high and 8 metres

wide, the outdoor cinema screen is comprised of a whopping 903,168 LED

dots. The screen has 5,500 candela per square metre and has been

designed specifically for this outdoor environment. The screen took 30 days

to build and two weeks to install here in Gladstone.

TELLTALETelltale is a public art installation by

davisthomas, which pays homage to one of the most iconic and long-standing events in the region – the Brisbane to

Gladstone Yacht Race.

Two large aluminium sails are adorned with numbers representing the

navigation details for the mid-points of the start and finish lines for the annual yacht race. The third sail pays tribute to Laurabada – the only yacht to have

sailed 50 consecutive Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Races, from

1953 – 2002.

PATSY LEE PLACEPatsy Lee was a well-respected, local

fisherwoman who was part of the fabric of Gladstone. She was often seen casting a line, setting up a crab pot or sitting at a wharf, talking about fishing

conditions.

In 1998, GPC named a fishing platform at the entrance of Auckland Inlet after

Patsy, which has been given a new lease on life as part of the development of

East Shores 1B.

CAPTAIN JOHN CRAWFORD RODGERS

This monument commemorates Captain John Crawford Rodgers who passed

away in a helicopter incident while on pilotage duty in the Port of Gladstone in February 1997. The memorial was

previously located at Auckland Hill and has been relocated to be a part of East

Shores 1B.

SOUTH TREE LEAD LIGHT This lead light was installed at South Trees

Inlet in the 1960s to ensure the safe passage of vessels navigating through the channel.

More than 50 years on, the original ironbark timber frame has stood the test of time, having weathered severe wind and rain

events. The original installation of the South Trees Lead Lights in the ‘60s was a delicate

process conducted out on the water. A qualified carpenter working on the lead lights

had a reputation for being a strong diver, jumping into the water to retrieve hammers,

chisels or items that were accidentally dropped during the installation process!

CALCITE CONVEYORS AND HOPPERS

Seeing East Shores 1B now, it’s hard to imagine the site used to handle

stockpiles of calcite. As part of a new era in handling multi-product bulk materials, Auckland Point Terminal became home to calcite conveyors

and hopper systems.

Commencing operations in 1995, the calcite facility handled a throughput

capacity of 56,769 tonnes per annum. Dozers were used to push

the calcite product into the hopper system, which then dropped down onto a moving conveyor belt to be transported to the awaiting vessel.

D6 DOZER A nod to the site’s industrial history, an original

D6 Dozer has been refurbished to replicate the bulldozers that were used at the Auckland

Point Coal Terminal during the 1950s.

In 1954, the D6 Dozer came into operation at GPC, after a scraper repeatedly broke down disrupting operations. Employee Bill Turner

suggested using a bulldozer and so began the Gladstone tradition of using dozers on coal

stockpiles.

THE CQU CREATES 2020 COMPETITION HAS REACHED A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE WITH A RECORD NUMBER OF ARTISTS ENTERING WORKS - DESPITE THE RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED ON THE EVENT BY COVID-19.

CQU Art Collection Manager and coordinator of CQU Creates Susan Smith said 89 entries were received in the competition.

“It’s great to see so many entries this year – obviously the COVID-19 restrictions has lead to the creation of many wonderful works of art,” she said.

“The judge, Cameron Curd, from the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery &

Museum, is now looking at the works and we will have an online catalogue in place of a physical exhibition due to COVID-19 restrictions. This will coincide with the launch of an online exhibition in August,” she said.

“The online exhibition will culminate with the announcement of the winners on 4 September, which will also be an online event.”

LAST WEEK ARTMATTERS AT CREATIVE GLADSTONE REGION INC RECEIVED A NUMBER OF DONATIONS FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES TO HELP RENOVATE AND EXPAND THEIR GALLERY.

Many local businesses and community members were involved in the renovation with Helloworld Travel Gladstone donating a large desk and office chairs, Council Representative Natalia Muszkat donating a kitchen bench, Libby and John Green from RACQ donating their time and labour,

Inspirations Paint CQ sanding the concrete floor, and Allan Giles donated his time to give the studio a fresh coat of paint.

Christine Ward who is the secretary of Creative Gladstone Region was thrilled by the community support.

“It’s wonderful! We closed for a week to upgrade the gallery, there were quite a few donations, we had donations of paint and labour and they were all thankful that they could give us something, not monetary wise but furniture wise, it’s great to see locals supporting locals.”

Christine went on to say how important these donations are for small non-for-profits.

“Any donation in kind is wonderful support! As you know with all small organisations we struggle to raise the money to buy resources, so to have all these things donated to us, it’s really great.”

ARTmatters used the donated materials to renovate a new office space and to open up and renovate the kitchen, installing a new window. ARTmatters is now hoping for donations for a disable toilet block as they do not have the facilities to service the disable art community in Gladstone.

Currently ARTmatters has 60 active members in the Gladstone Region, with membership lasting 12 months. If you are interested in becoming a member head to www.creativegladstone.org.au for more information.

THE YARWUN COMMUNITY WILL BE BETTER PROTECTED FROM FUTURE BUSHFIRE DISASTERS AS THE LOCAL RURAL BRIGADE PREPARES TO EXPAND TO A BIGGER FACILITY, THANKS TO A 25-YEAR RENT-FREE LAND LEASE FROM GLADSTONE PORTS CORPORATION (GPC).

The Westowe Rural Fire Brigade was first established in 1953 and will now be able to increase their vital services with 1.4 hectares of land at Calliope River Road in Yarwun.

The existing Brigade on the corner Boyles and Spring Valley Road only has two vehicle bays inside the shed, meaning members have had no option but to park their third truck outside.

First officer Danny Devers said the new headquarters will future-proof the Brigade for the next two-and-a half decades.

“We’ve got a 30-year-old shed which is hidden from the road and impossible for some to find,” Mr Devers said.“Our current location has caused a few issues for us and recently we’ve had several break-ins,” he said.

“We’re all looking forward to more space and having a real meeting room, at the moment we have to take the trucks out to use the space and it can be very hot in summer.”

Mr Devers said the Brigade began looking for a new location three years ago before it found the port land.

“GPC were more than happy to give us the land at Yarwun and we have been fundraising for a new shed over the last 12 months,” he said.

“All our members are over the moon to be able to expand, especially because the last few fire seasons we’ve had, we had to buy water but now with our own bore we can cut costs, there’s a lot of benefits,” Mr Devers said.

LAST FRIDAY THE 31ST OF JULY, TANNUM SAND'S JUNCTION CAFE CELEBRATED IT'S SECOND BIRTHDAY.Melissa Smart and her husband bought the cafe back in 2013 after working with the previous owner for a number of years. Melissa is no stranger to cafe culture, having previously owned a cafe in Victoria before she made the move to Gladstone.

With a global pandemic and the restrictions that followed, the hospitality industry has suffered greatly. With a large amount of community support, however, Melissa said business hasn't been too bad.

"We were very lucky actually, we have a great following of locals that regularly visit the cafe, they come most mornings for coffee and sometimes twice a day, we are very lucky in that way."

During the pandemic Melissa had to come up with quick creative solutions for a new set of challenges. "We did takeaways from the front door for about 6 weeks at one stage. We also began opening 3 nights a week, as the local pub and surf club were closed."

Melissa used her time during the pandemic wisely by constructing and opening a new outdoor dining space. "Once the government allowed gatherings of 50 people that's when we thought we should work on the space outside. It only took about 2 weeks to build by my husband and then we had it ready to go!"

Melissa attributes her business's success to the care and focus she gives her regulars on a daily basis. "We know our regular customers by their names, by their orders, we know their family members and kids, we are more of a community orientated business."

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ENDOF THE SECOND WORLD WAR

COMMEMORATING THE

AT THE BEGINNING OF 1945, AUSTRALIANS HAD BEEN AT WAR FOR OVER FIVE YEARS.

In Europe, the Germans surrendered on 7 May 1945. Australian prisoners of war in European prison camps were liberated and Australian sailors and aircrew began returning home.

This was a war like no other in history, with Australians fighting in theatres of war across the globe from Europe to North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, to Asia and the Pacific, and conflict coming to the Australian mainland for the first time.

The 75th Anniversary Commemorative Service will be an opportunity for all Australians to pause, reflect and acknowledge the service and sacrifice of more than 39,000 who lost their lives, the some 30,000 taken as prisoners of war and those who made their contribution in service on the home front.

Acknowledging the significance of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs will produce a Commemorative Medallion and

Certificate of Commemoration.

The medallion and certificate will be made available to every living veteran of the Second World War. While Australia can never repay the debt we owe almost one million Australians who served, this medallion and certificate are a small but meaningful way we can thank living veterans of the largest global conflict of the 20th century.

Applications can be made online at https://portal.nationalmailing.com.au/DVA/certificate or by calling 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372).

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs will deliver a televised commemorative service to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War from inside the Australian War Memorial on Saturday, 15 August 2020, commencing at 10.00am.

CARLA JAYNE SMITH IS ORIGINALLY FROM WHANGANUI WHICH IS IN THE NORTH ISLAND OF NEW ZEALAND AND MOVED TO GLADSTONE IN 2012 TO BE CLOSE TO HER SON AND GRANDKIDS.

Carla has been working for Andersons Auto City, an amazing family owned local motor vehicle dealership, for almost two months and loves it.

“It's new to me and I'm challenged and learning every single day. I've sold quite a few cars now which is great, but for me it will always be about the customer experience being genuine, fun and honest. My co-worker has over 36 years in the industry and supports my growth.”

“Everyone has different motives for

wanting to purchase a vehicle based on their lifestyle or needs. This is the fun part for me, dealing with customers and finding out a little bit about them, which I find gives a more personal and genuine touch. It's exciting to hear some of the customers' stories as they are all different, some funny, some exciting and even adventurous. Some customers have recognised me from when my husband and I owned a local fashion boutique which is a great feeling to know that they remembered me.”

“I love Gladstone. It reminds me of my own home town in that the people are friendly and like to support local business.”

Outside of work Carla still has a hand in Fashion as a fashion stylist and is building confidence through fashion and the fundamentals of modelling.

“I have put my hand up to help women

in need in the community through the women’s centre. My husband and I are also helping our son Fabian and partner Ruby, set up their new shop and showroom for their business Mantis Sportswear here in town. We also have a small business called Ricky the Bricky doing home renovations and maintenance.”

“My passion is in people. I have worked in retail management for well over 25yrs. In the fashion industry and at a very high level. I love the magic that happens when a person is completely happy with the service you gave them. That's what it's all about, the experience.”

THE HANDMADE GIANT LAUGHING KOOKABURRA MADE IT’S WAY TO GLADSTONE THIS WEEKEND, STOPPING AT MCDONALD’S MEMORIAL PARK, HEADSPACE, CC FITNESS ADDICTS AND CQ UNIVERSITY.

The big bird was built by local Townsville artist, Farvardin Daliri while he was stuck in Brisbane during the COVID lockdown and stands at eight-and-half metres from the tail to the beak, and four-and-half metres tall.

The kookaburra was constructed using steel round bars that are rounded and put together and locked. Then on top of the steel bars, which are light enough to travel, Farvardin put natural materials like bamboo skins which were treated and painted. The lower beak hangs with a motor that pulls a shaft up and down, with a sound effect that is also built in, allowing the kookaburra to laugh.

Farvardin created the kookaburra for the Townsville Cultural Festival which he founded and now is the executive director of. This isn’t Farvardin’s first

sculpture, creating many others of the years, including a giant koala, Jolly Swagman, Slim Dusty and other icons.

Farvardin said the main motivation for building the Giant Kookaburra was to have the last laugh over COVID-19, “Kookaburras laugh and that makes us laugh”.

Alongside the Giant Kookaburra Farvardin also had laughing workshops along the road, so he could get everyone laughing around it and make them feel better.

If you would like more information on the Last Litter Program please contact Karen on 0497 292 318. Even if your animal is currently pregnant they can certainly assist you now.

Gladstone Animal Rescue Group is now heading into its third year of operation and has managed to save

THE ABC BANK &WENTWORTH PRIVATE HOTEL

THE AUSTRALIAN STOCK BANK WAS TRADING IN GLADSTONE AS EARLY AS 1864 AND WAS ESTABLISHED BY HENRY FRIEND IN HIS OWN HOME.

Later it became the Australian Banking Company (ABC) and moved to its own premises, first in Oaka Lane and then into Goondoon Street just down the hill from where the Observer offices were first built. This bank moved around quite a bit after this, but this particular building became Wentworth Private Hotel by the 1930’s. Later it was known as Wentworth Flats and later still as Florida Flats.

Ingredients300g green beans, trimmed3 bunches rainbow carrots, trimmed, halved lengthways1 bunch radishes, trimmed, thinly sliced1 small red onion, thinly sliced180g baby leaf salad mix¼ cup vegetable oil1 large lime, juiced1 tbs grated ginger2 tsp caster sugar½ tsp ground white pepper½ cup toasted cashews, choppedmicro herbs, to garnish

Method1. Thinly slice beans using a small sharp knife. Blanch

beans and carrot in boiling water for 2 minutes until just tender. Drain and refresh in iced water. Drain and transfer to a large bowl. Add radish, onion and salad mix. Toss to combine. Transfer to a serving platter.

2. Whisk oil, lime juice, ginger, sugar and white pepper in a jug. Add to salad. Top with cashews and micro herbs to serve.
