Welcome TO THE 21ST ANNIVERSARy OF PIONEER NETWORK AND THE 2018PIONEERING A NEW CULTURE OF AGING CONFERENCE! WE’RE COMING OF AGE THIS yEAR WITHMUCH TO CELEBRATE AND A SENSE OF ExCITEMENT AS WE LOOK TO THE FUTURE.

This year’s Conference blends the old with the new, the traditions you love and expect like the RollCall of States and Nations along with innovative ways to connect like the Tech Experience featuringsome of the latest technology available in the world of aging.

We heard your feedback and we’ve brought back Guides who always draw a crowd and added manyfresh faces and topics. We have intensive sessions on nine different topics and site visits that not onlylet you see and hear communities with pioneering programs but also let you see the sites and soundsof Denver and the Rocky Mountains. We are here to “Promote the growth and development of all.”

Our Program this year is designed to bring our Values and Principles to life — starting with the WelcomeSession on Sunday night where you’ll begin to “Know each person” to our Coming of Age Party atCoyote Ugly where we’ll “Respond to spirit, as well as body and mind.” (See all of our Values andPrinciples on page 4.)

This is your Conference because all of us are “Entitled to self-determination” and we hope you takeadvantage of not only the educational opportunities that abound but also in creating new connectionsand deepening existing relationships. Our exhibit area is designed for you to connect with our Exhibitorsand Sponsors as they share products and services that can support you on your person-centered journey, see the latest in technology, view the beautiful photographs of Elders, go through the DementiaLive experience and gather with each other. There are gathering places for quiet discussion or whereyou can engage with a lively and a robust group but always with others who share your passion andenthusiasm. “Community is the antidote to institutionalization.”

And don’t forget to go outside and get some Vitamin D in the Mile High City. A refreshing walk will getyou energized for the mornings and afternoons ahead and allow you to “shape and use the potentialof the environment in all its aspects.” We invite you to enjoy all that Denver has to offer.

Join us in committing today and everyday to Pioneering a New Culture of Aging. Enjoy the Conference!

VALuES ANd PriNCiPLES Know each person. Each person can and does make a difference. Relationship is the fundamental building block of a

transformed culture. Respond to spirit, as well as mind and body. Risk-taking is a normal part of life. Put person before task. All elders are entitled to self-determination wherever

they live. Community is the antidote to institutionalization. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Promote the growth and development of all. Shape and use the potential of the environment in all its

aspects: physical, organizational, psycho/social/spiritual. Practice self-examination, searching for new creativity

and opportunities for doing better. Recognize that culture change and transformation are

not destinations but a journey, always a work in progress.

Our ViSiON a Culture Of aging that iS life-affirMing,SatiSfying, huMane and Meaningful

We recognize our need to create ways of living and working together that are different from the traditional models. PioneerNetwork supports models where elders live in open, diverse, caringcommunities. Pioneers are working for deep system change by bothevolutionary and revolutionary means, using Pioneer values andprinciples as the foundations for change — in-depth change in systems requires change in governmental policy and regulation;change in the individual’s and society’s attitudes toward aging andelders; change in elders’ attitudes toward themselves and theiraging; and change in the attitudes and behavior of caregiverstoward those for whom they care. We refer to this work as culturechange. Our aim is nothing less than transforming the culture ofaging in America.

Our MiSSiONPioneer Network advocates and facilitates deep system change andtransformation in our culture of aging. To achieve this, we: Create communication, networking and learning opportunities. Build and support relationships and community. Identify and promote transformations in practice, services,

public policy and research. Develop and provide access to resources and leadership.

Pioneer Network Quilts Exhibitor and Sponsor Gallery and in variouslocations around our host hotel21 years ago, a quilt square was chosen as thesymbol of the Pioneer Network, depicting thewarmth and homey feeling that a quilt conveys. As the first conference was being planned, itonly seemed natural to have a quilt as a part of the conference, further representing thediversity and networking required to create

something special and unique. This traditionhas been carried through at every conferencesince, and so in celebration of our 21st birthday,we have brought all the quilts from prior yearsto display. Don’t forget to sign this year’s quilt,so that years from now, you can come back andremember and know that you responded to thecall in 2018 to be a part of “pioneering a newculture of aging!”

Afternoon GeneralSession Are You ready for the Future?3:00pm – 5:00pmPlaza Ballroom B/C/E/F

The future is coming, and while we asPioneers have been working for changefor over 20 years now, we know that thefuture holds many challenges that weneed to identify and then figure outhow to meet. We can start by askingourselves if we are ready for the future…but more importantly, we need to GETREADy for the future!

As we all come together as a group forthe last time, we have some very specialspeakers who will be sharing messagesto inspire, motivate and teach.

We will begin by hearing from somewise leaders. Individuals who have ledtheir organizations through change, creating and sustaining cultures wherethe Pioneer Network mission, valuesand principles are lived out every day. These leaders met earlier at the conference, bringing their shared wisdom and experience as they

discussed some of the secrets to theirsuccess. Now we have the opportunityto hear from these wise leaders as theyshare some of those secrets and give usa little advice to take home on how wecan help spread the message to otherExecutive Leaders who can help takeour movement into the future.

While we know we need to prepare ourorganizations for change, we also knowthat being ready for the future requiresa personal journey for each one of us totake, as well as one in which we supportand grow current and future care partners.

And so, as we end the session, we arepleased to welcome a fellow Pioneer,Emmy Award winner Leeza Gibbons.Perhaps you know Leeza from her timeas a host of Entertainment Tonight, or asa winner of Celebrity Apprentice, but didyou know that Leeza has a connectionto us? Caregiving and passion. After caring for her mother as she struggledwith Alzheimer’s disease, Leeza startedthe Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundationand its signature program, ‘Leeza’s CareConnections’, an organization whosemission is to “prepare caregivers for anever-changing life by providing innovative self-care and wellness programs and resources.”

We are confident that you will leave thissession feeling renewed in the beliefthat each person can and does make adifference!
