During the thermal deburring process, parts are coated in a thick and generally undesired iron-oxide coating. When this coating needs to be removed, aqueous cleaning tends to be called upon. Choosing the correct cleaning agent and wash equipment is necessary to ensure thorough cleaning, achieve reasonable bath life and prevent bottlenecking. A well-designed process can effectively remove iron-oxide coating in high volume. Two aqueous cleaning methods for thermally deburred parts will be covered in this presentation.

High level cleanliness is important in many applications, notably in oxygen service systems where the hardware is used to transport, store and deliver concentrated gas oxygen or liquid oxygen. Small a.m.ounts of particulate or hydrocarbon residue (non-volatile residue) in the presence of concentrated oxygen can lead to a catastrophic fire or explosion. This presentation will share details about rinsability, particularly in aqueous cleaning systems. The effect and role of cleaner chemistry, water quality, rinse method, soil loading, temperature and time will be covered.

The world is changing. New challenges in industry require a look at technical cleanliness in the entire process chain and high-quality tests in advance. Planning a new process must include a clear analytical approach and realistic tests. There is also the benchmark with comparable processes. The presentation will cover a feasibility check regarding the required cleanliness specification, and include such topics as definition of the process and the requested parameters; determination of the suitable detergents and rinsing media; determination of process and time critical sub-processes; balancing between cycle time and process time; and determination of the suitable filtration and media treatment.

There are costs associated with process change. Most manufacturers consider the cost of cleaning agents and the initial investment in capital equipment. There are other costs — many even more significant costs which may not be apparent. In this program, attendees will learn ways to identify, minimize and sometimes eliminate the hidden costs of cleaning process change. Whether the reason for process change is a reduction of defect rate, increased customer requirements for cleanliness or new safety/environmental regulations, attendees will develop approaches to achieving positive process changes and avoiding costly mistakes. Attendees will learn about technologies that extend the life of cleaners, including a cleaner/membrane technology that results in a 95% reclaim efficiency. Manufacturers and component suppliers must have the ability to detect all types of contamination particles, no matter the reflection properties, to ensure the highest quality product. The JOMESA PSE (Precision Scan for Elements) system allows for the correlation of optical analysis with EDS material identification. In a mass production environment, the efficiency of the quality testing is essential to catch problems before they grow out of control. Correlating these two analysis methods is necessary to ensure the most damaging contamination particles are detected and removed from upstream processes.

Inspections of functional or safety-critical parts and components are increasingly required. While there are guidelines and specifications available, those specifications cover general methods and cannot go into detail to describe suitable procedures to inspect specific components’ dimensions, design and surface areas. This presentation will offer insight into various challenges and provide ideas such as dealing with extremely large and heavy components, often with a very high contamination level, which is clogging the membranes and does not allow the required particle count under the microscope.

To combat corrosion in manufacturing environments, production facilities have been turning to stainless steel passivation. This step of removing the free iron from the surface of the metal has become important in high-reliability markets such as medical, aerospace, automotive and more. Plants that are required to meet specific ASTM or a.m.S standards do not even have the choice of whether to passivate.

Pretreatment cycles in metal finishing vary due to the substrate material being processed. When setting up to clean a part, the soil type must be considered, but the substrate material, the process by which it is formed or made, and any subsequent treatments need to be taken into account as well. Is the part a casting, stamping, alloyed, hardened, machined, impregnated, wrought, cold formed, etc.? This presentation will touch on the part types we commonly see and provide tips for proper cleaning cycles with a focus on the dos and don’ts to be successful.

Neutral surface treatments were developed primarily to eliminate the hazards associated with the use of traditional strong acid treatments (acid pickles). These neutral surface treatments were intended to be drop-in replacements wherever acid pickles were being used in the plating or conversion coating process and come with the ability to perform the same functions — removal of oxides and heavy scales.

Since its development in the 1980s, CO2 technology has evolved greatly. This presentation will focus on the solid phase of CO2 for applications of cleaning, surface preparation and various residue removal in typical manufacturing operations. The presentation will also highlight relevant applications that use liquid CO2 phase and supercritical CO2 cleaning for medical implants, medical PPE (specifically N95 masks for cleaning and disinfecting), aerospace outgassing and silicone extraction. It will also cover specific industries and applications where CO2 cleaning and extraction is impacting parts cleaning in immense ways.

The presentation will also share information on federal environmental regulations affecting solvents. In addition, attendees will learn about a new law — the a.m.erican Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act — that will affect production of hydrofluorocarbons.

Increasing energy costs drive the need for lower operating temperatures, and regulatory restrictions on some chemistry effluents are making some traditional components obsolete. Ever-increasing competitiveness of the market drive the need for materials that work better and last longer. New technology is now available to meet these needs, but how does it work, and how do you know it works better? This presentation will cover new available technology and new methods that manufacturers can use to validate improvements in their cleaning processes. Several case studies will also be reviewed.

The key to useful component cleanliness measurements is to have a well-written and understood cleanliness measurement specification and testing procedure. The testing procedure should incorporate recommendations from ISO standards on component cleanliness measurements. These recommendations include equipment setup and verification, blank tests, contamination extraction procedure validation and analysis of extraction liquid.
