The principle of timeliness and the seasons of our lives bears some thought, though. When Wesley wrote about doing things at the time, he was reinforcing his counsel to new pastors to be punctual in all things. He gave important advice, because being on-time for appoint- ments, meetings, and other engagements is a show of respect and maturity. I hear his good words; in addition, I take a second meaning from his words. Following the Ecclesiastes advice, I need to know that it is important to do things in an appropriate season, not to rush them, or to delay in do- ing them. I know that people are making some preparations for Christmas right now. Bravo to you, well-disciplined shoppers; may your bargains be many. Parents might have started to buy some back-to-school clothes or classroom materials; maybe youve started to plan for a wedding or a special vacation a year or two in advance. These are practical ways to make sure that we are pre- pared for events that are routine, or are important for us. John Wesley most likely would put his stamp of approval on this kind of organization. Where he and Quoheleth (author of Ecclesiastes) might send up distress signals would be when we are so busy getting ready for what is coming next that we do not pay attention to what is happening right in front of us. Indeed, we can prepare our hearts and pantries for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I hope that we will take the time to enjoy the fullness of a summer day, and to stop our shopping and our planning long enough to spend an afternoon watching the waves on the water, or drinking iced tea with special friends. Doing everything at the time includes appreci- ating what is happening at the time, so that our conversations, our meetings, and our daily work can be holy at the moment we are experiencing them. If we keep anticipating the wonderful day when we have all of our tasks done, the house perfected, andwhatever is on our lifes ambitions list, we might miss the richness of this particular day. I think that some of our best advice comes from Psalm 118:24, This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it(New King James Version, emphasis in text). We are given the gift of each day, and it will come only once. I hope that each one of these August days will hold a gift for you, and I hope most of all that you will enjoy each one as it comes to you. Peace to you, Pastor Weatherly 1

August Tidings 2019 A WORD FROM PASTOR

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:”

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (New International Version)

“Do everything exactly at the time.”

John Wesley, from the Historical Questions of The United Methodist Church

The picture of the pumpkin spice candles at Meijer was dated July 8th. The woman who posted the picture on Facebook was surprised and a bit distressed that autumn products were on the shelves already. I sighed a bit, and thought of these two passages. The post was about a small thing. The world will continue to turn despite the appearance or absence of pumpkin spice can-dles. The principle of timeliness and the seasons of our lives bears some thought, though.

When Wesley wrote about doing things at the time, he was reinforcing his counsel to new pastors to be punctual in all things. He gave important advice, because being on-time for appoint-ments, meetings, and other engagements is a show of respect and maturity. I hear his good words; in addition, I take a second meaning from his words. Following the Ecclesiastes advice, I need to know that it is important to do things in an appropriate season, not to rush them, or to delay in do-ing them.

I know that people are making some preparations for Christmas right now. Bravo to you, well-disciplined shoppers; may your bargains be many. Parents might have started to buy some back-to-school clothes or classroom materials; maybe you’ve started to plan for a wedding or a special vacation a year or two in advance. These are practical ways to make sure that we are pre-pared for events that are routine, or are important for us.

Doing everything at the time includes appreci-ating what is happening at the time, so that our conversations, our meetings, and our daily work can be holy at the moment we are experiencing them. If we keep anticipating the wonderful day when we have all of our tasks done, the house perfected, and…whatever is on our life’s ambitions list, we might miss the richness of this particular day.

I think that some of our best advice comes from Psalm 118:24, “This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it” (New King James Version, emphasis in text). We are given the gift of each day, and it will come only once. I hope that each one of these August days will hold a gift for you, and I hope most of all that you will enjoy each one as it comes to you.

Peace to you,

Pastor Weatherly

I was so glad I had the opportunity to go on mission trip this year. It was such an amazing and life changing experience. I had absolutely no idea going into it that I would come out feeling almost weightless. The services at night and in the morning were very moving for me. Seeing God’s light reflected in many different ways helped me grow more spiritually. However, my favorite part of camp was being able to help people in need, hands on. The people I got to help were such a loving and generous family. I will remember them for the rest of my life. The friendships I made were amazing as well. Working with the same people for a long time caused us to grow and learn together and builds an incredible bond. I’m looking forward to next years mission trip and to see God’s light shine through on the people we will help.

CONNECTIONS Come and connect with God, Church and Community. Our first fall fellowship will be Thursday, September 19th….mark your calendars now….you won’t want to miss this first fellowship beginning our 4th year. If you have never been, we invite all adults to join us at our Connections’ Fellowship on the first and third Thursdays of each month; our meeting time is 7-8:30 p.m. We focus on spiritual growth, missions and fun. We have a wide variety of upcoming fellowships and missions that you won’t want to miss. For those of you who have been attending Connections, you know what to look forward to this fall and we can’t wait to see you again.

FROM THE LOAN ARRANGER & MORTGAGE CAMPAIGN COMMITTE

The objective was to reduce the mortgage payment to free up funding for programs. Contributions to-date are $90,891 plus additional pledges of $55,493 so we are at $149,184 (as of 7/14/19) thus exceeding our Base Goal of $132,000. We also recently received a new gift of $7,000 and a new pledge of $6,000. A special thanks to everyone for your generous support of this campaign. This will allow us to apply for a loan from the United Methodist Michigan Area Loan Fund to refinance our mortgage. The application will be submitted the end of September, so we would like to have all contributions received by September 22. (If you need longer, just let Kaj Ostergaard know). So now on to our Stretch Goal of $200,000. You can watch the progress on the Ther-mometer display in the Gathering Area by the Office. We welcome your questions and pray for your support. Craig Dukes, Church Treasurer Kaj Ostergaard, Church Financial Secretary Terry Pritchett, Campaign Committee

UMW: MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK

Noah Project sandwich makers are needed on Wednesday, September 11, 2019. This is a UMW bi-annual activity that takes place in the fall and winter. We will gather in the church kitchen at 1:00 p.m. on the 11th and

prepare approximately 450 turkey, ham, and cheese sandwiches which will be

delivered the next morning to the Central UMC in Detroit to feed the homeless. The total sandwich making only takes a hour

or so. Join us for a great time and fellowship while contributing to a worthy

cause. Contact Jim Gaul to sign up.

DO YOU LOVE WORKING WITH THE

CHILDREN AT OUR CHURCH?

We have an opportunity for you!! The Greater Detroit District is hosting Revive

Children's Ministry Leadership Training September 21st at St. Paul’s UMC in Rochester. See the flyer on the next page for

VBS: To Mars & Beyond was a huge success this July. We had 52 children throughout our building participating in Bible Stories, crafts, mission projects, science experiments, indoor and outdoor games. They also enjoyed tie dying their own VBS shirts and assembling space themed snacks. A daily visit from our favorite alien, EP-3:20 (named for our weeklong vector Bible verse from Ephesians) was a highlight of the program. The songs we learned and all of the activities were based on our daily power launchers of FAITH, BOLDNESS, KINDNESS, THANKFULNESS, and HOPE.

A huge thank you goes out to all who helped make VBS a success this summer. In addition to the roster below, we had generous donations, a great team assembling the pieces of our set and decorating the lower level spaces. It was truly a church-wide effort!
