From the GM's Desk
r. Lalit Kumar of Softline Sales Corporation is not the only one who is
frustrated with the Chinese Products. Like Mr. Lalith Kumar, there are many
small, serious remanufacturers, who take their business seriously. They are the
foundation of the Indian remanufacturing industry. They have worked
seriously, through the years, learning the process, refining it, building the
business, brick-by-brick. They are now watching helplessly, erosion of their
customer base. Anyone who has a little money can import finished Chinese
cartridges and throw them in the market at throw-away prices. The sad part is
that once the customer switches over to Chinese Cheap Cartridges, he rarely
comes back. In most cases it is observed that he switches over to originals.
The overall image of remanufactured cartridges in India is getting hit. Like small
time refillers managed to create a bad image about refilling in corporate
segment, likewise, these traders are helping create a negative image of
Remanufactured Cartridges with the users.
It is becoming more and more important for the remanufacturing industry to
unite and educate the customer about the industry. The question is who is going
to do it? Neither the refillers nor the traders are interested; they are fly-by-night
operators who are cashing in on an opportunity. HP would be very happy to
educate the user, but they would not talk favorably about remanufacturing. A
need for a core group of serious remanufacturers uniting and pooling in their
resources to combat China is emerging. This threat if not controlled would be
greater than the need to combat OEMs.

Hi & Bestech Company report for Reciclamais in Sao
Paulo
Taichung, TAIWAN –In response to the demands of serving a growing
worldwide customer base Hi & Bestech Company attends Reciclamais
2009 in Sao Paulo, Brazil again.
The below is the report from Hi & Bestech sales director, Mr. Alvin Hsu.
1. Is this show professional? Why?
The Reciclamais in Sao Paulo is the biggest show of the re-industry in
Latin. And, this year Reciclamais once again proved this. All the big and
important companies were present with their own booths at the Expo.
Each of the companies showed their new cutting-edge products and
services, and they could also see what their competitors are up to. This
only shows the high professional level of the Reciclamais.
2.What are our products? What are usually asking questions? What are
visitors looking for?
Our hottest products are the toner chips and the HP convertors that we
are producing. Most of the customers that stopped at our booth showed
great interest for them. The questions they asked were about the features
of our products, how do they work, what is the level of compatibility. We
were also asked about our newly-developed toner chips for Minolta
bizhub C203/253, C353, Minolta magicolor 1600/1650, 4650, Xerox
6180, HP HP P2035/2055, HP CP2020,3525 (we had some chips on
our booth). Some of the visitors from smaller companies were astonished
that there is a company which produces such a wide range of chips for
toner cartridges. These visitors were glad to receive information about
Hi&Bestech Company and they required our product list and price list.
3. How do u feel about this show? Are you satisfied about this show?
I am fully satisfied with Reciclamais. It was an invaluable experience for
me to get acquainted with the Latin leaders in the re-industry, and to
meet some of their presidents personally. I did not expect that so many
people will stop by our booth and would be interested in our products
before I went there.
After this Reciclamais, I am already convinced that our products have a
high demand in Latin market. I saw the strength of the re-industry, and
also the capabilities of a company like Hi&Bestech to conquer first to
market products to satisfy Latin customers ; I think that hardworking
and high quality are the key factor for our success.

Track & Indigo Introduce New Laser Component Tray and
Samsung Toner Cover
Mumbai based Track Engineers and Indigo Prints Smart Pvt Ltd both
well known companies to provide complete solutions for the Refilling
industry have added few
more products to their tally.
The first one is Laser
Component Tray. This is
meant to be used by any
refiller / remanufacturer of
Toner cartridges. The
component tray has been
designed such that you can
keep all the important parts
of the toner cartridges like
OPC Drum, PCR, Wiper
and Doctor blades, small
screws, springs etc in the
tray. Since most of these
parts are photosensitive,
these get damaged by
mishandling or dust present
on the working surface. The
tray helps in keeping these items systematically in such way that it does
contact surface area is minimal. So ideally even the smallest refillers
would also benefit from using the component tray.
The Samsung / Xerox Toner Cover is designed to protect the
photosensitive OPC drum from getting any physical damage since most
of the Samsung toner cartridges do not have protective shutters on the
OPC drums.
The cover can be used with Samsung 1710, 2050 and 1640 and Xerox
3115 toners. This can be used as an packaging material and given to the
customers who bring their Samsung/Xerox toners for refilling.

Canon has released a new generation ofinkjet cartridges with the PGI-520 andCLI-521. These cartridges are thesuccessors to the PGI-5 and CLI-8cartridges. Like the previous models, thePGI-520 and CLI-521 cartridges arecomposed of a five color single ink tankwith pigmented black for text printing andphoto black, cyan, yellow, and magentafor photo printing. Canon has also addeda new intelligent chip for the ink levelindicator.
These new cartridges arecompatible with the printer seriesPixma iP3600,iP4600, MP540, MP620, MP630,MP980 and MX860, which areequipped with the FINE printheadtechnology. The picture on the leftshows the Pixma iP4600 (successorto the popular iP4500), which looksidentical to the smaller iP3600 fromthe outside but differs in theprinthead equipment.
The number of nozzles in the iP4600 printhead has been decreasedcompared to the iP4500. The printhead of the cheaper iP3600 has beenimproved by the photo black cartridge and the 1 picoliter drop size, whichresults in better photo printing quality.

We are pleased to announce, after extensive tests by our R & Ddepartment, that we have released a new line of compatible OCP inkswith quality equal to the OEM.
OCP's number one goal is to produce high quality ink that is equal to theOEM inks and their performance. You, the customer, can expect that acartridge filled with OCP inks will result in both optically comparableprintout and light fastness (the property which OEM's often argue is notcomparable.)
To grant this light fastness, a special type of dye had to be used for thecyan ink. Therefore you, as our customer, will have the certainty thatprintouts with OCP inks will result in comparable data regarding the lightfastness as the OEM.
The product codes of the suitable OCP inks for those cartridges are:
An updated compatibility list for Canon printers is available at the OCPwebsite (www.ocp.de). Samples are - as always - available on demand in0,25kg packaging. For individual samples and quantities please inform usabout your detailed demand.

Mr. B.B. Somani has taken up an ambitious project of becoming the
Intel Inside of the Cartridge Industry.
Born in 1959 in a place called Takalibhan in Shrirampur Tehsil,
Ahemadnagar District of state of Maharashtra, Mr. Badrinarayan
Bansilal Somani studied till second year Commerce in Shrirampur. He
then went to Pune to complete his B.Com and LLB. Although a
commerce graduate and a Law Graduate, Mr. Somani was always
interested in technology. He got married to his wife Priya, in 1984, to
who from that day and until now has been the woman behind this
successful man. Mr. Somani took his first job in 1985 in a cloth retail
chain in Pune as an accountant. He was responsible to install computers
and modernize the cloth retail, where he was working.
The turning point of his
career came, when the
P r i n t e r C a r t r i d g e
Ribbon in his newly
installed printer got over.
Back then the choices
were limited and some
“smart” cookie offered to
refill the cartridge. After
making a big deal (and
good money) out of it,
the printer ribbon was
refilled and installed.
Curious as he was, Mr.
Somani did manage to
learn how to remove and
install the ribbon. He
also noticed a small
opening in the ribbon
cassette, thereby guessing
that the cartridge was
open-able and refillable.
He quickly realized that it
was a pretty simple job.
He saw an opportunity in
this and saw a huge
potential if done in an organized and ethical way. The idea was born and stit took form on 1 January 1991, when he formed Abee. The name Abee
was derived from a combination of his name and his daughter
(Anuradha). Never follow the market, always create your market was the
mantra he followed and Abee Printer Ribbons took the market by storm.
Even today the Abee Printer Ribbon Brand is a brand to recon with.
In the year 2001 as the market was shifting to inkjets, Mr. Somani started
his work in that direction. After doing a lot of research and market study,
by 2003 he was ready with the product. “Abbeefill Cartridge Refill

Till the year 2007 the products were made available in closed circles.
Only after satisfying himself and putting ERP and other necessary
infrastructure in place did he start his Franchise model.
He decided to go retail as
his experience had
taught him that the

Cartridge Refill station took off and has reached a 130 mark today.
Mr. Somani's vision was to have a one stop solution. So he devised the
following structure:
1. Remanufactured Printer Cartridges – Dot Matrix, Inkjet and Toner in
the brand name of Abee are being manufactured at his facility in
Parwanoo.
2. Abbeefill Cartridge Refill Station is the franchise retail chain which
sells and services the Abee Printer Cartridges.

adds a R & D centre and a training centre in his Pune facility to facilitate
human resource requirements of the retail chain and to ensure quality of
imaging components and keep updated with the technology. He plans to
open this in another six months time.
Mr. Somani is currently busy in establishing the Gloima Brand. He is
aiming to create awareness in the consumer mind that the
Remanufactured Printer Cartridges should contain Gloima
components, similar to Intel Inside.
The parent company is : Abbee Consumables and Peripherals Sshope

I remember, a couple of decades ago, a statement that a customer made.
"Compatible, generic or aftermarket; it's all the same garbage" (not the
word he used!). It got me to thinking: The public really doesn't
understand the truth about compatibles, and sadly, neither does my wife!
They know "garbage" when they see it or buy it. They know that they've
been burned and they know that they're unwilling or have enormous
trepidation about re-involving themselves in it again. People still use
compatible and generic as interchangeable terms. Hopefully this article
will help dispel some of the myths, lies and rumors.
What is a compatible?
• Compatible, as defined by Merriam-Webster is:
• Capable of existing together in harmony <compatible theories>
<compatible people>.
• Capable of cross-fertilizing freely or uniting vegetatively.
• Capable of forming a homogeneous mixture that neither separates nor
is altered by chemical interaction.
• Capable of being used in transfusion or grafting without immuno-
logical reaction (as agglutination or tissue rejection).
• Designed to work with another device or system without modification;
especially: being a computer designed to operate in the same manner and
use the same software as another computer.
By the very definition, compatible will always be, well, compatible, or as
commonplace language, generic. On the other hand, generic will not
always be compatible or necessarily a recommended alternative. Why?
Simple. The drug industry took generic as its own to symbolize "being or
having a nonproprietary name," or as once again Merriam-Webster
states, "having no particularly distinctive quality or application."
Now that we've got the "What" clarified, we'll move on to the "Why" with
stopovers at "When, Where, Who and How." Why compatible?
The most obvious answer to this question would be economics. With the
downturn of the dollar, and competition being fierce for copy clicks,
compatible makes more sense than ever.
The following are some good points and rebuttals:
Is compatible toner cheaper than the OEM?
Debunking the Myths and Rumors About Compatibles
By Mitch Schwartz • Densigraphix Kopi Inc.
No, it is less expensive, but definitely not cheaper. Most compatible
manufacturers spend tens of thousands on R&D and intellectual prop-
erty (IP) investigation before releasing new product. The savings that they
generate are from the choice of raw materials, but more on that later.
Will using compatible toner void my warranty?
No, it won't, according to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975.
This act gives consumers the right to purchase and use consumables at
their discretion. There is however certain obligations that the consumer
must be aware of. The machine or device must be maintained reasonably
well and that if a compatible supply has irrefutably caused damage to the
machine or device that the manufacturer has the right not to service it
under the warranty agreement. But if the balance of the warranty is still
in force, that is, that the warranty cannot be cancelled or modified for the
balance of time remaining.
Is compatible toner poorer quality than OEM?
No, if anything it is just the opposite. Most compatible toners go through
rigorous testing during the R&D process, then through the QC and QA
processes. Compatible toner cannot only save money, but also can give
better image quality and yield.
Aren't all compatible toners the same?
No. Buying from a reputable source will save you not only money, but
time, aggravation and customers. Always ask your supplier what tests
have been done to insure the quality of the product. Are these tests
internationally (ASTM, STMC, etc.) recognized? Does the toner match
the performance of the machine? And finally, take time to visit your
supplier.
Those that are truly involved with quality will not only be happy to show
you their facility, but will be proud of it as well.
Why do compatible toner cartridges sometimes look different than the
original?
In the last decade, manufacturers have become aware
that a viable compatible toner industry has made great
strides in the ability to understand the relationship of
toner to machine.
August 2009

Technical
ability to understand the relationship of toner to machine. With these
strides, or improvements, the OEM has looked for ways to slow down the
compatible market trade. Under the guise of creating a cleaner delivery
system, we went from a simple bottle to add toner, to the more
complicated cartridge system. In most cases, this accomplished two
things: a cleaner delivery system and a much more expensive delivery
system. With the advent of program chips, what once was a simple task of
opening and pouring in a bottle of toner became installing a toner
delivery system.
These chips, whether they completely shut down the machine or just
caused reset errors, added another layer of research and development to
the products. And finally, even the color of the cartridge parts can be con-
strued as proprietary.
When do compatibles become available?
In the early 1970s when compatibles (mostly generics) started, most were
for older models of photocopiers, usually between four and six years.
There were of course characters of questionable repute who claimed to
have the latest toners for the newest machines; usually these companies
sold product only once before disappearing.
By the early 1990s, compatible supplies had gained a solid reputation as a
good alternative to older, out-of-production machines, still in the four-to-
six year range. These toners were produced with little or no patents
issued by the OEM. Quality manufacturers and suppliers now
outnumbered the "fly-by-night" operators.
By the beginning of the millennium, almost all "fly-by-night" operators
were gone. Compatible suppliers were now involved with intellectual
property awareness due to the OEMs filing not only for toner, but
cartridge shape, operation and design as well. The biggest change came in
fact that the compatible market now had the resources to develop their
product and have it in the marketplace in as little as a few months after
the OEMs released new machines, with the average being eight months.
As of this writing, there has been some change in speed of delivery to
market, and much change has occurred within the industry. The
traditional copier OEMs have taken a page from the laser printer manu-
facturers as some are now incorporating chip technology in their car-
tridges. This addition not only increases the delay to market, but also
adds cost. While most of these chips are of the typical touch contact type,
some of the newer versions are radio frequency proximity (RF) or radio
frequency identification (RFID). Toner manufacturers have become
adept at "reformulating" product that is a "kissing cousin" to product
formulas that already exist. They are also in a better position to
understand the new chemical toner structure and what workarounds are
(Toner manufactuers) are in a better position to
understand the new chemical toner structure and what
workarounds are best. So whether a base formula exists
or not, the average to market time is about 12 to 18
months.
equipment that is too far outside the box such as large format, XHS
(extreme high speed) or too small, such as off-brand equipment that
there's little or no interest in. Remember that the above estimate of time
to market includes, but is not limited to:
Toner development
• R&D of the equipment features and functions.
• Investigations of the toner base and additives, polarity, flow, fix
temperature, participle size w/distribution, H/H, N/N, L/L environ-
ment testing, etc.
• Lab grade sampling. (corrections)
• Small production grade sampling. (corrections)
• Production.
Cartridge development
• R&D of equipment features and functions.
• Investigation and research of patents: Including, if necessary, function
of electronic control/disable device (chip), patent discovery for same.
• Initial workarounds, with testing. (corrections)
• Small production sampling with running tests. (corrections)
• Production. (With future corrections for IP infractions)
Note that the above can, and most usually is accomplished on or within
the same time frame. There are however occasions when toner becomes
available long before the cartridge. While this is not the most ideal
situation, there are end users that would welcome even this. Also note
that this example does not include time to packaging, marketing or sales
training.
Where does compatible product come from?
The simple answer would be almost anywhere in the world. The truth of
the matter is that there are many places or countries that still rely on
manufacturing generic toner as opposed to compatible toner. So where
are the best places that manufacture toner? Start with the birthplace of
toner, the United States; Japan came later. The U.S. was responsible for
the invention and creation of the first toners as we know them. These
toners were the forerunner of the compounding process, dry mixing,
melting, chipping, pulverizing via the jet mill method and finally sieving
to correct particle size, usually 20 to 25µm. Today's toners are generally
under 10µm, with some approaching the 5µm range. (Handbook of
Imaging Materials, 2nd edition.)
One note on the above paragraph. While pulverized toner is still the
prevalent product on the market, OEMs have been moving to a newer
technology known as CPT, which stands for chemically produced toner.
CPT is known by many different names, all depending on what process
the manufacturer actually uses, but for all intents and purposes it is the
same. Where pulverized toner starts as a large particle and is ground
down to size, CPT is a chemical reaction that starts with a nanoparticle
and "grows" to the needed micron size. Manufacturers that invest in the

Technical
new technology, especially those that produce strictly compatible, are the
ones to work with. This new technology is not by any means inexpensive;
therefore the ROI (return on investment) will be a long time coming.
These manufacturers are in it for the long haul.
While there are still a few U.S. manufacturers of compatible toner, the
biggest OEM is still the original, Xerox. In Rochester, N.Y., and Mis-
sissauga, Ontario, Xerox is still developing new toners for themselves as
well as others.
Next is the Pacific Rim. This is where the world's largest tonnage of toners
comes from. Obviously Japan is a leader in OEM toners, but within the
last few years certain world events have compelled them to seek alternate
sources of revenue. China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam are the
bigger centers. Moving west, India, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are centers,
while there are some much smaller manufacturers throughout Europe
and South America. None currently reach the tonnage to compete with
the rest of the world.
As for what's available from the assorted worldwide manufacturers, a
good portion of the output is strictly OEM being manufactured by
captive manufacturers. As an example, in 2008 there were approximately
35 solely non-captive manufacturers in China. That is that none of their
production was destined to the OEM market. (Toners & Photoreceptors
Conference 2008.)
Who are compatible manufacturers?
For the most part:
• They are companies that have either at one time produced only OEM
product, then branched out to compatible, or were forced to compatible
by loss of market strength.
• They are companies that have specialized in only one type of toner
base, i.e., Canon type mono-component or Mita dual-component.
• They are Japanese with manufacturing plants in other parts of the
world.
• They are companies that have been "in toner" for decades.
• They have the willingness to invest in future manufacturing methods.
While this is by no means a complete list of toner manufacturers, it is
however complete as to compatible toner manufacturers. There are
countless manufacturers, distributors, agents and the like that come and
go all the time. As stated earlier, compatible or generic are not
interchangeable terms; they are two completely different groups of
manufacturing mindsets. Can a generic manufacturer ever become a
compatible manufacturer? Only if they desire to stay in business, invest in
future technology and show cause and effect in quality performance
repeatability.
While there are still a few U.S. manufacturers of
compatible toner, the biggest OEM is still the original,
Xerox.
As to compatible manufacturers of cartridges and parts, the same applies.
If they complete their due diligence not just in form, function and fit of
the device, but also the intellectual property issues, then they too are true
compatible manufacturers.
Those that have in the past and continue to flaunt patents will have short
business life spans. Not only are their products for the most part low
grade, but they are in violation of laws that can affect their respective
customers as well. The term "indemnification" uttered by customers has
brought many foreign manufactures to their knees.
How is compatible toner differentiated?
Quite simply we can go back to the beginning. Compatible is capable of
forming a homogeneous mixture that neither separates nor is altered by
chemical interaction. Generic toner cannot compete with this simple
concept. Compatible toners are tested in much the same way OEM
toners are tested, but with one more important stipulation: The toner
must be forward and backward compatible. OEMs do not need to test in
the above manner; they will never need the ability to mix well. It is up to
the manufacturer and their representative to function test the
compatible toner in the following manner:
• OEM benchmark, Ex: 10,000 prints
• Compatible over OEM, 10,000 prints
• OEM over compatible, 10,000 prints
The above is just one small example of testing that must be done in order
to verify that any toner (other than OEM of course) can be accepted as a
true compatible. There are many other tests and benchmarks that must
be reached even before the above can be attempted.
Analyses that the product must go through include, but are not limited
to: (ASTM, Volume 15.09, 2008, Section F05, Business Imaging
Products.)
• Particle size measurement and distribution.
• Particle thermal properties.
• Particle electrostatic charge/discharge capability.
• Testing for toner usage, yields in both mono and dual systems.
• Testing of image density.
• Testing of background density.
• Testing for adhesion on varying media.
• Testing for image transfer on varying media.
Compatible toners are tested in much the same way OEM
toners are tested, but with one more important
stipulation: The toner must be forward and backward
compatible.
August 2009

Technical
These tests and procedures should not only be carried out by the toner
manufacturer, but also should be repeated by the finished product sup-
plier. This is not to say that one does not trust the other. But the latter is
more in sync with the local marketplace, its needs and its particular issues
with such things as year-round environmental conditions, media types,
equipment variances and so forth.
Finally, unlike some suppliers of generic product, compatible suppliers
will never "re-grade" product that has not met the specifications put forth
by the standard of the OEM product. A compatible may in fact be better
than the OEM product, but never less than.
Let's review.
A compatible product is not a generic product. Compatible is as the word
implies: well-matched, well-suited.
Economics for the most part get you in, quality keeps you coming back.
In as short a time period as possible, with the best solution available. It's
better to be late to market, then to break the market.
Wherever you need to go to qualify the best solution for your
marketplace.
One who invests in updated technology, for current and future solutions.
By scientific analyses and RW (real world) testing.
While I have attempted to put forth an explanation of compatible in
general, I have in fact ignored parts and accessories and given the stage
completely to toners. While this was not the intent, toner is a big (and
possible the biggest) part of our industry. It is the one item that keeps
repeating orders like clockwork. It is, or can be solely responsible for
increase of sales, or loss thereof. Everything in this industry revolves
around the engine that drives the hard copy, and the fuel that it runs on.
