October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month Did you know October is Down Syndrome Awareness month? Every 1 out of 691 babies are diagnosed with Down syndrome in the United States each year. (Wikipedia) Down syndrome children are like any other children except they have one extra chromosome that gives them different characteristics. Some different characteristics are stunted growth, flexible ligaments, flattened nose, and hypotonia, which is a symptom that lowers your muscle tone. October is an important month it is Down Syndrome Awareness month. In honor of this awareness, each year the Down Syndrome Awareness for Families Foundation (DSAF) holds the “Buddy Walk”. At this year’s walk, there were more than 1,600 registered walkers, who raised more than $80,000 for this great cause. One of those walkers was Waverly Middle School’s very own Evan Horner. His cousin, Tyler Matthew Brill was born on April 23, 2012. He was diagnosed with down syndrome two days after his arrival. His whole family loves him very much. Tyler’s Team, “Team Tyler” came in second place with the most amount of walkers at 105 registered walkers. By Evan Horner

You ASKED… We FOUND OUT!

You may ask, “why do we have chicken so much?” According to Mr. Stephen they get more chicken than anything else and they try to balance out all the food sources.

As you may know the government has created the “Health Hunger Kids Act,” and it wants us to eat more whole grains. Did you know that we need 8-10 oz of grains a week, 9-10 oz of meat, and we need 3 ¾ cups a week of vegetables.

Last year was grain, protein, and milk was a full meal. This year you have to have a one-cup of fruit or one cup of vegetable or ½ cup of fruit and ½ cup of vegetable.

Mr. Stephen said that if you have any questions that you could ask someone who works in the kitchen. He also wants to know, is getting real silverware a good idea? If so tell him. By Courtney Sayer and Riley Dixon
