WHITBY High School governors have put a big dent in plans for academies in
Ellesmere Port.
They have voted no to the scheme which would see two academies replace Whitby,
Cheshire Oaks and EPSSPA Schools. This was their nal decision which now leavescounty education chiefs with a massive dilemma.
Chairman of governors Myles Hogg said they voted no because certain conditions
could not be met by academy sponsors. The original plan was for the academies to be based at
Whitby and EPSSPA with Cheshire Oaks School being
closed down. Teachers union the NUT were opposed from
the start and now Whitby governors may have nally killed
off the scheme.

PARENTS at Hinderton School fear that the discontinuation
of the current bus service will make life more difcult for
their autistic children.
The county council opted not renew the contract for its
current bus service and will instead use its own eet to the
school in Capenhurst Lane from September.

HUNDREDS of local school children are looking forward to experiencing a wilder side to
life this summer when they spend time exploring a unique haven in the midst of Shells
Stanlow Manufacturing Complex.
Since the Stanlow pond was rst opened in 2001 over 2,000 school children from the
surrounding area have joined Shell staff for a series of fun days out rummaging in the
sites nature pond and also learning a little about the companys operations.
Situated in a remote corner of the site, the pond continues to thrive each year with an
ever-increasing list of species from resident coots and Canada geese to frogs, water
scorpion and the great diving beetle. Shells hidden wilderness, which boasts two
dipping platforms, a bird hide and picnic area, provides the perfect environment for the
children to come and discover many forms of wildlife.
Nature walks, hosted by local ecologist Dave Platt, are an added attraction. Childrenare taught how to identify all kinds of ora and fauna and name birds by listening to their
calls. They also learn about the lives of the various mini-beasts they had previously
caught in the pond.
Shell public affairs assistant Rachel Evans said: This is a unique resource that
educates children about the environment and at the same time enables them to
understand the importance of the oil and chemical products we manufacture on site.
lShell contract and procurement manager for UK manufacturing Rasmus Valanko, left,
and Shell technical clerk Janet Taylor search for insects and mini-beasts at the Shell
pond with Year 5 school children from Cambridge Road Primary School.

A GROUP of artists from Little
Sutton are holding a major
exhibition this month.
A diverse and dynamic show will
be staged at Ness Gardens from
7th-19th August.
It is the second exhibition of the
work the Spectrum Art Group, who
were previously known as The St.
Pauls Artists.Originally established in 2002 to
enable practising artists to meet
and work alongside others of equal
passion and commitment, the group
continues to thrive and develop.
Its members have decided to mark
their continuing success and sense
of achievement by mounting this
second exhibition of their work.
The groups monthly meetings atSt Pauls Church Hall, Hooton, are lively and
stimulating. Ideas are exchanged and honest,
constructive criticism is welcomed as an
essential aid to individual development. All of
these painters relish the excitement of seeing
and discussing the work in progress of other
artists and all benet enormously from the
combined energy of the group.
Encouraged by the inspirational guidance
of painter and tutor Anita Reid, theyexperiment with a variety of media and
techniques. They are prepared to take
risks and to explore ways of extending
the boundaries of their artistic aims.
The atmosphere in any meeting of the
St Pauls Artists is one of disciplined
hard work and infectious enthusiasm.
Just come along to the Visitor Centre
at Ness Gardens from 7th to 19th August
and see the results for yourselves!Admission to the exhibition is free.

A THRIVING local joint-venture company
specialising in business starter units has
celebrated its silver anniversary.
Entep Properties, based at the CanalBridge Enterprise Centre in Ellesmere
Port, began life in 1983 on redundant
land owned by Shell UK. At that time
there was a sharp increase in demand for
business starter units and Shell teamed
up with Ellesmere Port and Neston
Borough Council and Cheshire County
Council to ll the gap in the market.
In the ensuing 25 years Entep Properties
has provided premises for over 1600 newbusinesses. Prots from the joint venture
have been ploughed into youth training for
local school leavers, more than 2,000 of
whom have so far taken advantage of the
Government-aided two-year courses to
put them on the road to careers as diverse
as business administration, architecture,
engineering and hairdressing.
The Canal Bridge site originally started
off with 24 business units but has nowexpanded to 57. A further nine business
units are set up at the companys other
site at Rother Drive Business Centre.

WHAT could be better thanspending a warm summerevening in the beer
garden at The Hooton Hotel?
When we visited there lastweek, it was a glorious dayand the perfect setting for
some outdoor drinks. But there is more to The
Hooton Hotel than just aspacious beer garden.
Situated next to HootonRailway Station, the HootonHotel has a long establishedreputation as one of the areas toppub-restaurants.
Diners keep comingback to the HootonHotel, which is famedfor its delicious foodat affordable prices.
The staff are alsorenowned for their
professionalism and friendliness whichall adds to the dining experience.
All the food is freshly prepared on thepremises by high calibre chefs whosource the best ingredients, includingorganic seasonal vegetables.
The newly refurbished pub has newdecor and the restaurant areas feelsfresh and bright.
Proprietor Stuart Arnold, who has onlybeen at the pub for less than a year,
says the refurbishment has made ahuge difference.
Its so much brighter and that createsa very good atmosphere which is soimportant in a pub, said Stuart.
One of the great features of TheHooton Hotel is the unique octagonaldining area which has great character.
For people who want to sampledifferent beers, Stuart has three rotatingguest ales from different breweriesacross the country.
There is a varied atmospheredepending on the timing of your visit.Sunday lunches are busy with familiesat the carvery but if you go along inthe evening there is live entertainmenton Wednesday and Friday as well asa disco playing music from the 60s,70s and 80s on Saturdays. If you are
into quizzes, there is a quiz night onTuesday.
