Welcome to the Geneva School Gala Proceeds of the auction will benefit The Geneva School of Manhattan, the only classical and Christian school in the New York City area. As a classical Christian school, The Geneva School of Manhattan exists to provide a time-proven classical education within a biblical worldview. We equip students to love learning, pursue excellence, and become leaders in scholarship, virtue, and faith.

The Geneva School of Manhattan was founded in 1996. As a young institution without the legacy of alumni support and endowment, it relies on the assistance of friends who share in its unique vision to continue its mission.

The Gala aims to raise funds for the Scholarship Fund and the enhancement of our program needs.

The Gala is the primary fundraiser for the Scholarship Fund, which upholds the School’s mission by making available scholarship funds for many families from all parts of New York City. Geneva School generously extends financial aid to many School families, including those who move to New York City for ministry purposes.

Please note that The Geneva School of Manhattan is tax exempt under Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.

Here is an early opportunity to view what will be offered at the auction and plan your bidding strategy. These descriptions are subject to change before the auction.

General Auction Rules 1. A bidder number will be assigned to you when you check in, and the number you are assigned is registered in your name for use during the evening. All bids made with your number are your responsibility. Items sold must be taken away tonight.

2. All successful bids for both Silent and Live Auctions must be paid in full at the end of the evening. Payment will be made at checkout where you will be given a receipt.

3. All sales are final with no refunds or exchanges, unless the donor is unable to fulfill his or her obligation as specified. Please do not ask donors for exchanges or refunds. Please note that donors are not obligated to honor any winner’s request to change any provisions of the package as specified in the program or on the winner’s certificate.

4. To ensure full enjoyment of any item requiring special arrangements or reservations, please contact the person listed on your winner’s certificate within one month after the auction unless otherwise specified on the certificate. Donations and services expire March 4,2017, unless otherwise specified.

5. Every reasonable effort has been made to describe each item accurately, based on information supplied by donors. All items are sold AS IS and without warranty or representation of any kind by the school as to the correctness of description, genuineness, authenticity, condition, quality, fitness, or purpose. Dollar values are estimates of retail value provided by the donor and are not warranted by Geneva School for tax purposes or for fair market value. Geneva School is not responsible for donor representations.

6. The Silent Auction bidding is done by marking your bidder number on bid sheets located near the item. Please observe minimum bids and increments listed on each bid sheet. To be valid, the bid must exceed the previous bid by the stated increment. Any bid that does not will be rounded up. The auction bidding number with the highest bid at the close will be the winner. Only an authorized auction representative may nullify a bid and may do so for the following or other reasons: failure to write a bidder number, illegible handwriting, blocking bidder sheet as Silent Auction closes, addition of bid after closure. In the event of a dispute, the Auction Chairs will act as the final authority to determine the winner.

Waiver of Liability AgreementAll of the items, services, or events described herein or are otherwise available for purchase at the auction have been donated to The Geneva School of Manhattan. The description of each such service, item or event and its availability for purchase at the auction have been made in good faith by the School based upon the representations of each donor. Each purchaser of an item, service, or event at the auction hereby acknowledges that this is a charitable fundraising event for the benefit of the School and that the School makes no express or implied warranties with regard to such items, services or events.

The School shall not be liable for any misrepresentation of or defect in such service, item or event, or for the failure of such service, item or event to perform in the manner described or represented; that the School shall not become liable for any personal injury, property damage or accident which may occur due to: (i) defects in or failure of such service, item or event, or (ii) wrongful, negligent or arbitrary acts or omissions on the part of the donor, the donor’s agents or employees or any other person or persons not under direct control of the School. The Late Night With Jimmy Fallon TV show is hosted by actor and comedian Jimmy Fallon, and the hip-hop group The Roots serve as house band. The Late Night torch has been passed to Fallon because longtime Late Night host Conan O’Brien is moving on to the Big Leagues, taking over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno. Fallon is the third host in Late Night’s history, since it first began in 1982 with David Letterman at the helm.

Kindergarten Quilt

The Kindergarten students depicted their favorite Bible stories, using their imaginations to draw the stories poignantly on pieces of fabric. The fabric was then sent to a quilter who sewed each piece together to create a wonderful story quilt. Hang this quilt on your wall or let your child snuggle with it each night—either way, it will be a beautiful reminder of the promises of God and the pure faith of little children.

The youngest students created stunning sun prints with a process that perfectly suits their age and skill level. Each Pre-Beginner picked out flowers and then arranged them on a piece of special sun-print paper, working quickly so the light of the classroom wouldn’t change the paper too soon. Then the students sat back, relaxed, and let the sun do all the hard work.

After exposing the paper and arranged flowers to the sun for five minutes, the paper was rinsed in water. This simple process turned the paper a deep indigo with the flowers’ outlines imprinted in white, and created the gorgeous prints you see here.

Pre-Kindergarten East Handprint Lilacs

Each student used their hands to print a beautiful lilac design. With acrylic paint rolled on to the sides of their hands, they very carefully placed their lilac onto the page, making sure that each flower was wonderfully represented. The result is a bouquet of beautiful lilacs brought to life!

First Grade Alphabet

First Grade students began their project by examining and discussing Illuminated Letters from the Middle Ages. The students noticed how the designs interacted with each letter—some designs popped in front of the letter, others lay behind, while still others wove in and out and around. The students then chose their letter and set to work to create an absolutely stunning collaborative alphabet.

Second Grade Geometric Flowers

Squares, triangles, rectangles, and diamonds, oh my! Second Grade students were given only a handful of foam shapes and challenged to create a floral design from them. The uniqueness of each design is a testament to each student’s vision and creativity. They arranged their shapes and glued them onto cardboard to create a homemade stamp. They then inked their stamps and printed them onto the tote bag—perfect for trips to the grocery store or beach! This is a set of two unique bags.

Third Grade Floating Away

It’s a bird; it’s a plane—no wait, it’s just Third Grade! Each student worked hard designing his or her balloon. Notice the colors, shapes, and textures on each balloon, designed intentionally to reflect the personality of the balloon’s artist. Once the balloons were finalized, the students then had fun playing with perspective to make it look as though they are all floating away!

Fourth Grade Impressionism Stationery

The students in Fourth Grade examined works by Claude Monet, noticing how his blurry strokes give us the impression of a sunset or a lily pond. Students also learned about warm and cool colors and the contrast created when placing those colors next to each other. With strips of tissue paper and a limited color palette, the students created their own Impressionism collages, focusing on scenes of nature, which were then turned into sets of cards.

Fifth Grade Silk Screen Print

Fifth Grade students were challenged with a process they had never before undertaken: silk screening. Each student first painted a simple watercolor design on his or her paper and then cut out a stencil from cardstock. Taking turns, each student then placed his stencil on top of his painted paper and then laid the silkscreen on top of both. Using the squeegee, he carefully pulled the ink across the screen. This covered the entire watercolor with black ink—except for where he had placed his stencil. Lifting the screen off the paper and peeling away the stencil revealed the stunning prints you now see joined together. Perfect for adorning a bedroom wall or another fun spot in the house!

Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grade Monet Waterlillies

The oldest students at Geneva School worked together to create their own version of one of Claude Monet’s most famous renderings of Water Lilies (1916-1919). Each student was given a square of the painting and asked to mimic it on his or her own piece of paper. Once the students finished their work, each square was added together to create their stunning version of Water Lilies.

A Week in the Pocono Mountains

Enjoy a week in a Rustic Cabin in the Pocono Mountains! Think nature walks, chill-time, and fireside chats! A short 2 hour drive from New York City, this cabin has four bedrooms and sleeps seven. With three Geneva School families in nearby cabins, playmates are a possiblity!

Amenities include golf, swimming pool, and tennis courts and lessons for the children a half-mile away. Enjoy swimming: there are creeks, lakes and swimming holes nearby!

Available for any week in June and July 2017, except July 1-4.

Day at King Spa for Two

Enjoy a day at the spa! Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, this Korean spa’s massive 40,000-square-foot facility houses multiple floors, which each feature saunas aimed at providing visitors with relaxation and health benefits. Heated to a pore-opening 200 degrees Celsius from burning oak-tree wood, the dome-shaped hot-steam room (bulhanjeungmok in Korean) features floors made of yellow soil and salt that replicate a 500-year-old therapy designed to treat illness and pain.

On the complete opposite side of the temperature spectrum, the ice sauna uses freezer-like frosted walls to cool the air around patrons sitting on log stools or standing on their hands. In between hopping from sauna to sauna, visitors may hang out in one of the lounges, get a haircut, or even grab a warm Korean meal or refreshing dessert.

Board Games with Mr. Chen at Dr. Long’s

Mr. Chen will teach your child and up to nine friends two to three great board games which encourage 1) logical reasoning 2) teamwork and 3) anticipation of how one’s teammates think. Students will have loads of fun while straining their brains. The student will also walk away with one of these board games.

Dr. Long will host this fabulous time at her apartment, where you will enjoy her famous meatballs and chips. You can also pick one dessert from a list of Dr. Long’s specialy baked goods!

Art with Mrs. Reed

Has your child always wanted to learn to silk screen? Is he fascinated by the Impressionists? Is she looking to deepen her drawing skills? Chess Adventure with Mr. Trodd

Your student and three friends will enjoy a day of chess mystery and fun at Chess at 3’s Uptown Chess Club! They will have to put their chess and detective skills to the test and search for clues hidden around the club to accomplish the TOP SECRET mission:

The Count’s Chess Puzzle Room: An old grandmaster wrote down his most powerful moves, put those moves in a paper shredder, and locked the shredder in a wooden crate. He also left some clues...

Students have an hour to decipher riddles, find the clues, and solve the puzzles to unlock the “Bye-Bye Box.” In 1 hour, the paper shredder turns on and the grandmaster’s moves....will....be....SHREDDED.

Pizza and snacks will be provided. Students may be dropped off; parents are welcome as well!

Ages 5+. Room difficulty changes based on player’s skill.

Instructors will be Mr. Trodd, Coach Luka, and Tyler Schwartz, CEO of Chess at 3.

Meet at Barney Greengrass for lunch and a short discussion about the core ideas of Judaism. Travel to the Jewish Museum to see the Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Jouney exhibit. Finish with a trip to Zabar’s Deli for delicious Jewish pastries and a book discussion. Shalom!

All the world’s a...screen. Film is the ultimate form of cultural expression in the modern world. It also happens to be Mr. Terrell’s love language. Albert Popa is a profession-al portrait painter in New York City with more than 30 years of experience. He has executed over 100 commissions.
