Oo la la! This year’s Auchterhouse Sports Day 2018 is going to bethe crème de la crème. We have some French visitors for the eventthis year, tying in with the village twinning, so hope you can comealong on the 25th of August to help us make it one to remember!

The day will kick off with the Pipe Band at 1pm as always, followedby an event that we haven’t had time for in the last few years, theTug ‘O’ War! We hope to have as many different groups as possibleto participate, e.g, French V Scots, Up the hill V down the hill etc. There will be some prizes on offer as the event is kindly sponsoredby Grewar’s Farm Shop.

Once the push and pull is over, it’ll be time for another pushingevent, the wheelbarrow race, sponsored by Forsters Roofing! With amaximum of 4 people per team, the wheelbarrows can be decoratedhowever you wish but whoever is pushing it should be able to transportthe other 3 members of their team from point A to point B as quickas they can. In true sports day fashion, it won’t be as straight forward as it sounds!

The “Auchtathlon” will be refreshed with some different events, including “Toss the caber”, “Haggis throwing”, “Toss the Boss” and amini “chrisassinator” (you may remember the winning catapult froma few years ago.) We will also be having some inflatable fun withsumo suits and a target scorer.

We will have the usual “on the day” entry competitions. The tasting competition will be tablet thisyear. We hope our French visitors can taste some of the wonderful home recipes we are sure peoplearound the village use.

We will not be having cupcakes, but instead hope to get your creative juices flowing by running aphotography competition. The photos should be of the local area and entries will be accepted in categories of primary pupils, secondary pupils and adults.

Vegetable sculptures will be replaced to try and encourage more eco warriors in the village! We arelooking for some recycled plastic models along the theme of Myths and Monsters! Could youmake a Medusa from a milk carton or a plastic Pegasus?!

Teas and coffees will be available throughout the afternoon, as always. Donations of sandwiches andbaking for the tea and coffee stall would be greatly appreciated on the morning of the event.

Our Hill Race, kindly sponsored by Auchterhouse Country Sports, will kick off at 3pm (£3 entry fee)with the presentation of prizes at around 4.30pm. T-shirts will be on sale again this year so don’tmiss out on your chance to pick one up!

Dronley Community Woodland - Update

It is coming up to 18 months since the Forestry Commission came to usto ask if we would be interested in purchasing the Wood. 18 months anda great deal of work: seeking support from the community, establishinga charity with a formal constitution; holding open days to gather ideasfrom the community; applying for a Scottish Land Fund Stage 1 grant to appoint a consultant; drawing up a business plan and feasibility studywith him; completing a Community Asset Transfer (CATS) request topurchase the wood from the Forestry Commission; finally working on a very detailed Scottish Land Fund Stage 2 application for a grant to purchase the wood.

The CATS application went in, in April 2018 and we are awaiting a decisionfrom the Forestry Commission agreeing to our offer. We hope to hearfrom them fairly soon, hopefully by the end of June at the latest. Oncethat has been agreed, the application for the grant will be considered bythe Scottish Land Fund. We hope to have the results of that decision bythe end of August.

Meanwhile we are updating our website to make it more interactive, with a members’ section and an on-line membership form. We plan tohold an AGM in late August or early September when we hope to havenews of the outcome of all our hard work.

Dronley Community Woodland - Update (continued)When/if (better not to assume) the Wood comes into community ownership, we will be employing aWoodland Manager, one of whose tasks will be to organise work parties. That will be the start of thefun part of owning a wood and a different sort of hard work. We hope that many of you will comeand help restore the wood and implement a good many of the suggestions made during the opendays. Ultimately we all want to make the wood a really pleasant place to spend time in.

Fingers crossed!

The best part of having a long cold, wet winter andearly spring is that we really appreciate the sun andthe flowers when they finally arrive. The daffodils inthe garden have been superb. The blossom is comingon the fruit trees and the rhubarb has sprouted likemagic.

The children have only been out on Friday afternoons since the start of this term, yet they havedone a power of work. The whole school came out onthe first Friday and it was so encouraging seeing themwork so well. The P1s did well, sowing flower seeds, noticing the many shapes of the seeds. Three plotshave been dug over, with one plot revealing “treasure”– potatoes which the nursery planted last year andwhich were not dug in the autumn. The potatoes survived the winter remarkably well and the childrenwere excited to take them home. It’s a good thing therhubarb has grown so well as, surprisingly, pulling arhubarb stalk and taking it home is regarded as agreat reward for the afternoon’s work!

The School Land Garden (continued)The bath pond at the back of the playground is too overshadowed by trees. The water lily grew butdidn’t produce any flowers so we decided last year to move it to an open space in the School LaneGarden. Several children spent two afternoons this term, digging out the hole for the bath, measuringto make sure of the size. However it was too heavy to move and very dirty so a plastic pre-formedpool was bought and fitted in to the same hole last week. A spirit level was used to get the pool level– a good learning exercise which will be followed by another lesson in their next afternoon as thepond has sunk into the soft earth and is now a bit low. We will have a discussion about what to doabout it. The plants are in and the donated water lily and iris are already growing well. It will begreat if we can get frogs’ spawn next year. One young boy asked if dragonflies will visit the pond – who knows!

The garden is not just for the children and is open for all to visit and to participate. As always if youwould like to help just let me know. We have not been so regular on Saturday mornings so phone or email to arrange when we could meet.
