Page 15: Auburn University Panhellenic · WHAT RECRUITMENT IS • A chance to investigate each sorority • A chance to have each ... new people • A process of MUTUAL SELECTION. WHAT RECRUITMENT

HOUSING• During Recruitment, a potential member provides her

own place to live (residence hall, apartment…)

• As a first year member, she will live where she has already agreed to live.

• Each sorority has a section of apartment style units in The Village. All members are expected to live there at least one year.

• A sorority member should not sign a lease agreement until she is certain she is not required to live on her sorority’s hall the following year.

Page 16: Auburn University Panhellenic · WHAT RECRUITMENT IS • A chance to investigate each sorority • A chance to have each ... new people • A process of MUTUAL SELECTION. WHAT RECRUITMENT

LEGACIES• Sororities want to know which potential members are

their legacies.

• No woman has to choose the sorority she is a legacy to.

• No sorority is required to choose their legacies.

• The average sorority in 2014 had 91 legacies in recruitment last year, with a high of 195.

• A relative should not expect a phone call from her sorority.

Page 17: Auburn University Panhellenic · WHAT RECRUITMENT IS • A chance to investigate each sorority • A chance to have each ... new people • A process of MUTUAL SELECTION. WHAT RECRUITMENT

In 2014, 58% of our potential members were legacies

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT LEGACIES?

Page 18: Auburn University Panhellenic · WHAT RECRUITMENT IS • A chance to investigate each sorority • A chance to have each ... new people • A process of MUTUAL SELECTION. WHAT RECRUITMENT

About 30% of them pledged to their legacy group. It’s 18% of the overall pool.

RECOMMENDATIONS• Like extra credit. You can work on them, but don’t have to.

• Chapters place differing levels of importance on them.

• Must be sent in by an alumna member of that sorority, not necessarily from Auburn

• The alumna can write a letter, but should also include her sorority’s form, if possible.

• The potential member should provide the alumna with a picture and resume to forward as well as a stamped, addressed envelope. Send a thank-you note later.

• If a potential member has not secured a recommendation to a sorority, she should not send out a packet about herself anyway.

• If a sorority requires a recommendation to pledge someone, they can find her one.

DON’T BE INTIMIDATED• Not every potential member meets all of those criteria.

• The average applicant met 4 of these ten criteria.

• In fact, women who meet none of those criteria participate in recruitment and happily join each year.

• A mix of traits exists in each of our members and each of these traits (and more) can be found in each of our sororities.

• The idea that “outstanding women” are rare at Auburn and can be found only in one or two sororities is incorrect.

Page 38: Auburn University Panhellenic · WHAT RECRUITMENT IS • A chance to investigate each sorority • A chance to have each ... new people • A process of MUTUAL SELECTION. WHAT RECRUITMENT

Again, over 88% of the women in recruitment join at the end of the week

Now is the time for a potential member to decide whether she wants to be a member of a

particular sorority or a sorority member!

RULES & REGULATIONS• Inappropriate contact can come from alumnae, chapter

members, and the mothers of members.

• The chapter can face sanctions, but so can potential members found willingly participating in inappropriate activities.

• If someone will bend the rules to attract you, they are probably doing it for others as well. No one can offer any guarantees.

• There should be no meetings or parties, except those held by official Alumnae Panhellenic Groups.

Page 42: Auburn University Panhellenic · WHAT RECRUITMENT IS • A chance to investigate each sorority • A chance to have each ... new people • A process of MUTUAL SELECTION. WHAT RECRUITMENT

• You should not be contacted by strangers about recruitment.

• Before and during recruitment, a potential member should notreceive any cards, letters, flowers, gifts, be entertained by others,or have money spent on her that she would not otherwisereceive.

• From August 5-16 only, there is to be no contact between apotential member and her sorority friends. They will all be busywith recruitment anyway.

• This summer, a potential member can still maintain thefriendships she has with sorority members, as long as she is notbeing actively recruited by her friend.
