‘Princess Michael of Wessex!’ 3. Presenter Matt Baker telling viewers that ‘St Paul’s Abbey’ was where ‘Admiral

7. Fearn Cotton under an umbrella tells viewers that ‘The ship over there with the guns is the famous battleship called HMS Something-or-Other which weighs 90 million tons and fought at the iconic ‘Battle of Agincourt’. Where do they get them from?

Horticulture Group 1 visited the Gardener’s Cottage garden in Kirkby on Monday afternoon. This is a lovely garden, which is terraced and slopes steeply away from the house, affording wonderful views from most parts of the garden. The owners give all the money collected to the National Garden Scheme, for various charities. The NGS has given 2.5 million pounds to various charities around the country. Visits are by appointment only, unless it is open under the NGS.

ASHFIELD U3A HOLIDAYS 2013 Holidays to Amsterdam and Seville 2013

I do not have any information on dates or prices as yet, this is mainly due to new companies tendering

for flightbusiness at East Midland and Birmigham airports. There is a possibility that Monarch may take

over flights to Amsterdam and Seville, in which case I should be in a position to obtain dates and

quotes. There are flightsfrom Gatwick and Heathrow - but obviously we would refer a more local

joining point.

All 2012 holidays are now fully booked, except… REYKJAVICK NOVEMBER 2012

DUE TO UNEXPECTED CANCELLATION ONE SINGLE ROOM NOW AVAILABLE

5 nights B&B Centrally located Best Western hotel. Flying from Manchester 7/11/2012. Contact Caroline 01623 721987 [email protected]

Springtime in Seville Espana

*Tapas, flamenco, gothic & moorish architecture, galleries, museums. Optional visits to the Alhambra and Ronda. 6 nights B&B, staying in an 18th century palace converted to hotel in the Latin Quarter.

Stunning views of the city from the rooftop pool & terrace.

I have been asked to organise a Peru and Machu Picchu adventure trek for 2013. There will be a meeting on Monday 25th June at the Junction pub from 7 pm. for those who may be interested.

Register your interest with Caroline. Caroline Rhoades 01623 721987 07724210563 [email protected]

“ Easy Wheelers” (Cycling for fun)

Cycling Programme for Summer 2012 Planning Meetings will be held on Monday 30th July – 7.00 at The Griffins Head, Papplewick. These meetings are to discuss members’ ideas for future runs. All group members and those interested in joining us are welcome. At present we meet each Wednesday, 0900, at the Hucknall Leisure Centre Car Park. This arrangement is due to be revised at the next meeting so come and have your say. There is still room for more members, so if you are interested please contact the group leader,

Alan Snape, on 01159273524 or 07940146542. –e- mail:- [email protected]

No Refunds Policy Your committee have reluctantly decided that when tickets are ordered they must be paid for, unless advised differently, and if you find you cannot attend the event you have bought the ticket for, it is up to you to sell that ticket on, and no refund will be given by U3A, unless there is a waiting list in operation. This is because some events have run at a loss due to people suddenly cancelling and expecting their money to be refunded. After all, if you book seats at the theatre, or a bus trip and found you couldn’t attend, you would lose your money, and, regrettably, we must have a similar policy.

THEATRE VISIT with Barbara Ives

Well what can I say. -South Pacific was just magical. The singing the dancing and most of all the atmosphere in the Royal was electric. Wednesday the 30th May started with our usual lunch just to set the afternoon off to a good start. We choose a Turkish Restaurant on Upper Parliament Street called the Antalya, we none of us had any experience of Turkish cuisine so this was a first. As the restaurant was almost empty we thought it may have been a question of not so good, but well what a treat we all had the 2 course meal was £6.95 for a starter and a main course. We had a bottle of white wine to help wash the meal down. Then we asked for the bill, but no we had not finished, next the charming waiter bought out some fresh fruit, apple, orange and grapes all beautifully presented and then the best was last Turkish Delight. We really had very good value for our money and we are going to return again as we so enjoyed ourselves. Thanks Barbara you are fantastic at organising the Theatre Trips

Angela Atkins..

Jazz Group Members of the jazz group attended an excellent performance by the Nottingham Young Jazz Orchestra on Sunday 8th July at Mansfield Library. The young musicians took us through a wide range of music from the Zootans to Charlie Parker. Old favourites included Sweet Georgia Brown A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Sq., Mr Bo jangles and a fairly new piece Breakfast Wine. NYJO also have a very talented Combo group and we enjoyed about 20mins of their great improvisations. Mansfield library are also hosting the NYJO again in December a date we could put in diaries when we know the exact date. We had a really good afternoon and are looking forward to some more jazz outings in the very near future.

BREAKING NEWS! CAR-PARKING

We have learned that Morrison’s have extended their car-parking to 3 hours. This means that you could park at 9.30am and collect your car before 12.30, - ample time for our meetings. Please make sure you don’t over-stay your time, though, as it is controlled by Parking Eye, and this is notorious for clamping down and giving out huge fines.

Weekenders visit to the ‘Secret Gardens of Winster’

The Weekenders had a great day out on Sunday, 15th July to visiting these ‘Secret Gardens of

Winster’, near Matlock. We had lunch at the pub, sharing a couple of bottles of vino, laughed all

through the meal, and didn’t leave the pub until 2.00pm (from mid-day). We then bought our garden

tickets, caught the community bus up the hill and meandered through the gardens as we made our way

back to the bottom. Some still had room for a delicious cream tea, and others, like me were still full

from lunch, so settled for a chat and a cuppa. We then visited many of the remaining gardens – there

were 23 in all, bought some plants and made our way back to the pub, in time to watch the Morris

Dancers perform for an hour. Colleen was roped in to show her latent skills as a dancer, and we

enjoyed the interlude in the sunshine to end a perfect day out. Many thanks to Caroline for organising

this trip.

The group continues strongly, having completed our first seven months. We listen to a wide range of music, sometimes taking in a bit of jazzed-up Bach or a number from a modern ‘classic’ musical. Members are welcome to bring or request a favourite piece to any meeting. These are the themes for the rest of the year:

August - French & Spanish composers September - The Orchestra October - Members’ Choice November - Patterns in Music

December - N & E European composers We meet on the first Monday in the month, from 2 to 4 pm. Our sessions are at the Ashwood Centre so there’s plenty of room for new members. If you’re interested, do get in touch, or just come along at 2 pm on August 6th.

There is an Internet scam, (again!). This time it purports to be from the DVLA.

They supposedly need details of your car registration and driving license or similar

details. As usual with these scams, there are spelling and grammatical errors -

‘there’ is used instead of ‘their’, and it says if you ‘refuses’ to comply there will be

penalties etc. Delete any, messages purporting to come from DVLA without

opening.

There will be a change of programme for October. The speaker will now be ‘Legal

Walking Group "A" held their annual summer walk on 19 June to the Bolton Abbey

area of Yorkshire. 16 members travelled by minibus to join the 10 others who were

camping in the area. We enjoyed a 9 mile walk, climbing up the Valley of Desolation

to Simon's Seat high on the moors above the River Wharf. We were fortunate to

enjoy one of this summer's rare day's of sunshine. The views from the summit were

magnificent and worth the strenuous climb up. Afterwards we journeyed on to

Skipton for a fish and chip supper in a restaurant. Another great U3A event.

Delete any, messages purporting to come from DVLA without

opening.

Ashfield U3A Our First Half Year Plus

The group continues strongly, having completed our first seven months. We listen to a wide range of music, sometimes taking in a bit of jazzed-up Bach or a number from a modern ‘classic’ musical. But mostly we are mainstream, sharing our love of classical music, in some cases coming new to it, and always extending our knowledge, appreciation and enjoyment.

Many thanks to Caroline for organising

this trip.

6. Sophie Raworth watching 100 people with yellow flags waving them in unison on top of the Festival Hall and asking ‘I wonder what those guys are doing up there with those flags?’ ‘I think it must be something to do with the Morse-Code’ - in fact it was semaphore which she doesn’t seem to have heard of.

Martin Fish Gardeners’ Question Time

The well-known author, broadcaster and garden expert will be visiting us again

on Thursday, October 4th. 7 for 7.30pm

Another chance to see Martin, who is a very amusing speaker and raconteur, and ask your questions, give him your gardening problems etc.

Tickets on sale today, £5.00 to include home-made cakes and tea or coffee. See Jill

Murder Mystery evening Saturday, October 27

th, 7.00 for 7.30pm

We will present a Murder-Mystery evening, with a troupe of players providing the action. The theme will be the Wild Wild West!

Come dressed for the action – six shooters and Stetsons, feathered

headdresses etc., - not compulsory, but it would be fun.

This time, your committee will provide a two course chicken supper, with

food placed onto tables of eight, to ensure that EVERYONE gets their

fair share.

We have realised that we must do this ourselves, as relying on outside

caterers invariably means there is not enough for the last two tables, -

- and we must avoid this.

Tickets at £11.00 per head and table plans are now available
