AU SUMMER UNIVERSITY 2016
The Viking is, to this day, a popular and powerful figure in Western culture. Viking mythology has been popularized in comics and been misused politically with equal success, making central gods and goddesses such as Thor, Odin and Freya widely recognized today.
Join this summer course to learn what Viking mythology really is, what our sources are – textual as well as material – and which methods are used to research them.
Following the theme of this year, long term structures and change, students will be introduced particularly to the problems regarding the wide span in time and geography that is hidden beneath the seemingly unified concept of Viking mythology.
The aim of the course is to provide a broad understanding of Viking mythology through time.
The course will introduce students to the sources of Viking mythology as well as interdisciplinary methods and research in the field with a particular focus on the question of continuity and change over distances in time and geography.
The course is organized as a general introduction followed by individual in-depth lectures on subjects related to the theme of the course.
The course is focused on literary studies and the study of religion, but will include various other perspectives such as archeology, history and research in the field Old English.
Lecturers will be a mixture of leading senior researchers and younger cutting edge scholars in the field.
An excursion to a Viking Age site will be organized for participants of this course.
