PIONEER GUN CLUB – FEBRUARY 2014
ATTENTION!! ATTENTION!!! ATTENTION!!!!
I'll be holding a special Orientation class this month on top of
our regular scheduled date. I think I'll be naming it the "Once
in a Blue Moon Class". I'll be spreading it out over two nights
so everyone won't fall asleep on me. Dates and times are as
follows. Feb. 10th from 6:00pm - 9:30pm & Feb. 12th from
6:00pm until were done. If you know someone who would like
to join but just can't make a Saturday class now's their chance.
Please have them contact me to attend. If something happens
and we have a few drop from the class, I'm able to drop it also. I just can't justify it
for 2 or 3 guys....5 or more makes sense, that's another $1,250.00 I'm sure we can
use some where. 816 922-9202 or [email protected]
Gun Shows are up and running!
Decembers gun show was tough sledding. Saturday was suppose to be ice-ageddon but it held off until later
in the afternoon, it also held a few of us off from driving out there that day. That's okay though working a gun
show isn't worth getting to try out all of those cool survival skills we've learned from TV. January was a
much better show with a greater turn out. I'd like to think everyone who has come out and helped represent
the club out there. Ed Camp, Bob Hudson, Jerry Van Engelenhoven, Jack Volz, Rick Drum, David Kramer &
Kris Salmen. I hope I'm not forgetting anyone, my sheet with every ones name isn't in front of me. Spelling
Jerrys' last name took a peak into the data base for sure!! If you would like to help out please contact me so I
have you info at [email protected].
I hope every one is enjoying this fantastically COLD weather as much as I am....Woo Hoo!! Being stuck
inside with that someone special and 15 kids is great! Just kidding...... I only have 3 kids ;)

PIONEER GUN CLUB – FEBRUARY 2014
Well, ONE MORE TIME!!!! It seems it just cannot sink
through to some people. TURN THE BELL AND
FLASHING LIGHTS ON ANY TIME YOU GO DOWN
RANGE.
Incident: I arrived at range #1 parking near bench 28.
Observed 2 pick up trucks & gear parked at benches #2 #3 &
#4 and heard shooting. So, I set up bench 28 to shoot 3 AR-
15 rifles. Since there were no lights or bells sounding and
shooting from the other end of the range I started to load one
of the rifles to function test new loads.
Just as I inserted a loaded magazine I observed 4 people returning from the 200 yard targets. (You cannot see the 200
yard targets from the far right of range #1 at benches #28-9 & 30) The shooting I heard was from range #2. I did not
go to the other benches to check who was there, did not even look closely. The lights & bells were not on, it SHOULD
have been a safe assumption the range was open. Of course this was quite upsetting, I identified myself as Pioneer
Gun Club Range Officer and name then conveyed a STRONG degree of ‘upsetedness’ to these people. One of the
shooters informed me that I did not need to be a ‘butthead’ about it and that there was nobody else there when they
arrived. At this I informed this ‘gentleman’ that I could remove them from the range for such an egregious violation
of safety rules.
This is not the first time people have been down range without turning on the warning bell & lights. But it is the first
time I was on line loading a semi-automatic rifle with people down range and totally out of sight from my bench
without the range bell & lights being on.
Do not cop an attitude if I become quite unpleasant should you be caught violating this fundamental safety rule. As
most know, I have a very long professional history where being ‘unpleasant’ was a prerequisite to survival. When
necessary I WILL bring that to the position of range officer. If that upsets anyone, feel free to make a motion of recall.
Carl Robertson Range Safety Officer.

Small Berm: Thanks to Rick Lance for constructing the small
berm in front of the target frames at the 100 yard line on Rifle Range
#1. Also, thanks to Joe Tapko for putting down the grass seed. The
berm was constructed to protect the target stands that allow the
target frames to be easily raised and lowered. Unfortunately,
someone thought it would be great sport to see if they could shoot
them up so the berm was needed to protect them. It’s too bad we
have members like that, but we do. It will be muddy for a while until
the grass gets to growing, so please be patient.
By-Laws: The executive Board is working hard to review and update our By-Laws, Code of Conduct and Range
Rules. It will be on the web site soon for your review and we will discuss it at the February and March meetings. With
input from the members we will continue to update it and hope to have it in completed form for a vote to accept it at the
April meeting. If you have any changes to the current By-Laws please contact an E-Board member and let your views
be known.
WMSA: If you are not a member of the Western Missouri Shooters Alliance you should be. WMSA is dedicated to
the restoration of the inalienable right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. Every month Larry
Swickard has articles about how our constitutional rights have and are being taken away. Larry has done a great deal of
research in preparing to write these and they are very informative. Kevin Jamison writes his Liberty Notes to give us
information about the law which are always interesting to read. President for Life Sheila Stokes-Begley’s Presidents
Corner and A Woman’s View give us information about the upcoming laws affecting the Second Amendment and local
politicians. There are also several articles from other authors concerning the Second Amendment and happenings in the
gun world across the country. Join today. It is only $25.00 per year and is well worth the money.
Shooting Season: Warm weather is rapidly approaching and many of you are just waiting for the chance to get out
doors and go to the range for some shooting. This is a good time to review the Always Rules of Safe Shooting.
1. Always keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction (at the back stop or berm). 2. Always keep your finger off of
the trigger until you are ready to shoot (you are ready to shoot only when you sights are on the target). 3. Always keep
your gun unloaded until ready to use (you are ready to use when the range is safe and you are on the firing line). Always
abide by the rules and no one will be injured and nothing will be shot that you did not intend to shoot.
PPC/Bullseye Building: Work is slowly proceeding on the building. Come out and give them a hand with the
work. Bob Hudson has scheduled a couple of Saturday work days in February so come and help. Thanks to Bob
Hudson, Richard Long, Richard Muir, Rick Drumm, Richard Brinkman, Joe Tapko and George Monahan for the help
they did last month.
Dues: Only 1 more month until they are due: Remember that your dues are due on March 1, 2014
There will not be a reminder mailed out so remember the date—it is the same every year. There is a late fee of $25.00
for dues that are not postmarked on or before March 31. Please pay your dues on time and avoid the late fee. If your
dues are not postmarked on or before March 31st your gate card will also be shut off and remain so until your dues and
late fee are paid. If you are a NRA life member you do not have to send in proof of NRA membership unless you
became a life member during the past year. You do not have to send in a hold harmless for this year—the one you sent
in last year is still good. You do, however, have to send in a completed renewal form with your dues. Failure to send in
your dues, completed renewal form and proof of NRA membership (if you are an annual member) will result in
everything being sent back to you. Get your renewal form at one of the ranges or from the web site.
Signing in: Many people are still not signing in when they come to the range. The range rules state that you must
sign in when you get to the range before beginning to shoot and sign out before leaving. All of your guests are also
required to sign in and out. Please follow the rules. Failure to do so may result in you being asked to leave the range.
4
Rifle Ranges: Don’t for get to sound the horn and turn on the lights and bells before going down range.
Remember you cannot handle firearms while people are down range and/or the bells and lights are on. These procedures
are in place to protect our members and guests (including you) so please review them and follow them at all times—even
if you are the only one on the range. You never know when someone else will drive up and start handling guns and/or
shooting. No one wants to report to your family that you were shot (or that you shot someone) because the rules were not
followed.
Women on Target Event: We are considering hosting a Woman on Target Event but need your input. This is an
Instructional Shooting Clinic that provides a friendly and fun introduction to recreational shooting. It is aimed primarily
at women that are new to shooting but any lady may participate. Many volunteers will be needed to put this event on. If
you would be willing to help, please contact Jack Smart or Connie Baum. Also, let them know if you know of any ladies
that might want to participate. The event could include instruction in some or all of these activities; pistol, shotgun, rifle,
muzzle loading, or archery shooting. Please let us know if you can help so the planning can go ahead if we have enough
help and interest.
Guest Fees Pioneer Gun Club does not limit the number of guests you can bring or how many times each guest may come to the range. However, guests do increase our liability. They may send a round off of the range or injure themselves or others. Guests also increase our expenses by using heat, water and lights, as well as increase wear on equipment and facilities. Guests do not pay for insurance, repairs or improvements. Guests do not help with repairs, installation, or maintenance – this is done by PGC volunteers or hired out. Guests do not help pay the lead fund. If guests go to MDC’s Lake City Range, they pay $3.00 per hour. If they go to Crossfire or other commercial ranges, they pay. MEMBERS have been asking why they do not pay at Pioneer. The E-Board Recommends:
· We request that guests voluntarily donate $3.00 per day to the range when they shoot.
· This does not apply to family members or children under the age of 21.
· There will be a can at each range for guests to put their donation in.

Work is going on in the New Building. We are working Mondays, if you have
time, come on out. Check with me or Jack to see if we are working that day for
sure. I would like to thank the following people who have given their time to
help your club. Hal Bush, Richard Muir, Rick Drumm, Jack Smart, George
Monahan, Griff Picket and Bob Hudson.
I also need to give Rick Lance A BIG THANKYOU for fixing the low water
bridge. He filled it with rocks, then cemented them down and all the work he is
doing on the road and grading and snow- plowing the ranges clear.
Below is a list of jobs looking for someone to step forward and take them on
and get them done. You don’t have to wait for a work day. If you have some
spare time, Go do one.
Jobs that need to be done:
Chalk holes in baffles at McBride
Fix the low water bridge at McBride Finished Done By Rick Lance
Install culverts at McBride on Archery Range
Paint outside of Brickyard Range.
Clean out silo
Repair roof of Barn
Remove all old fences that are not being used at McBride
Finish cutting trees on berms at McBride.
Hang the door on the west side of the Brickyard.
Making the trailer frame into a bridge
Install AC in Brickyard: Will require 2 people to lift unit
We have scheduled 2 work Saturdays in Feb The 1ST and the 22nd. The main goal is the completion of the new
building. On the 22nd weather permitting we will start on the 200 yard berm it needs to be cleared.
Now I have to yell at some pistol shooters. The Brickyard was cleaned the first week in January. Now on the 23rd,
there is a pile of shot up backers 6-8 inches deep thrown on the floor near the new backers. IT IS YOUR
RESPONSIBILITY WHEN YOU REMOVE A BACKER TO INSURE THAT IT MAKES IT TO THE
DUMPSTER OUT SIDE. IF YOU CAN’T DO THAT I SEE 3 CHOICES: 1 BRING YOUR MOM OR 2 YOUR
WIFE AND HAVE THEM DO IT FOR YOU OR THIRD, QUIT THE CLUB AND GO SOME WHERE THAT
THEY HAVE PEOPLE PAID TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOU. WE DO NOT!!!!
We are getting way too many hits on the baffle. Yes they are doing their job but they are working overtime. There
should be no hits on the baffles and walls but that’s not the case.
Someone in the past left a can of white spray paint to hide your mistake. Use it or bring one and use it.
If you can’t hit the target, join in an organized group. They will teach you to shoot.

Things are going well with our Junior Marksmanship Program.
We have 16 young shooters who regularly attend the Thursday
night instructional meetings. One young lady is working on
completing her Distinguished Expert level, while two young men
are just stating that level. We have several in the Pro-Marksman
and Marksman level with a few in the Marksman First Class and
the Sharpshooter levels.
One young lady, Keeley Stone, daughter of member John Stone, is shooting very well and progressing at a quick pace
through the award levels. The fathers of two other young men will be joining the Pioneer Club in the next month.
Another father has already joined and just recently brought his son an Anschutz smallbore rifle and shooting outfit so he
can increase his scores and ability also.
Two of our young shooters, Noah Austin and Devin Schwindt, are also training on air rifles and soon to be shooting high
power. The MSSA has loaned both young men match-grade AR-15’s along with other gear to help them get started in
service rifle shooting. As many of you remember my junior shooter Chris Calumpong, got the Distinguished Rifleman
Award at Camp Perry at the age of 14 in service rifle. It is my hope that these two shooters will also earn their
Distinguished.
If any member would like to donate to the Junior Marksmanship Program, please do so. We are looking into buying
some air rifles and other smallbore rifles to replace some of our older rifles. We would also like to purchase an Orion
Scoring System which will cost around $2000. The Orion is used by the CMP and the USA Shooting competitions. If
the 800 – 900 members of Pioneer could donate just $10 a year, we could get some great equipment for training the
young shooters. When you renew this year, just add $10 and mark it for the Junior Marksmanship Program. Thanks
very much!!
2014 JUNIOR OLYMPIC SHOOT by Ed Camp
The 2014 USA Shooting Missouri State Junior Olympic Championships are over and the results sent into the Olympic
Committee in Colorado Springs Colorado.
We had 29 competitors’ entries in four different events: 3-Position Smallbore Rifle, International Air Rifle, Air Pistol
and Sport Pistol. It ran two days again this year. One very nice day and one very cold day. On Sunday we had every
propane heater Bob Hudson had brought burning to keep the range warm. The ladies spoke about getting stuck on the
port-a-potty seat so we even had one in there. It was COLD!
Gold, Silver and Bronze USA Shooting medals were given out to all the top men and women shooters in each event.
Unfortunate a couple of events only had a couple of ladies in them to take the medals, we need more girls shooting!
In the 3 Position Smallbore Rifle, the Men’s Gold Medal went to Benjamin Estes of Ozark, the Silver Medal went to
Jack Berhorst of Lawson and the Bronze to Robert Broadstreet of Ozark, Missouri. On the ladies side, the Gold Medal
went to Brianna Sawyers of Ozark, the Silver to Sadie Evans of Ozark and the Bronze to Katlyn Branson of Warrenton,
Missouri.
The International Air Rifle event is at 10 meters, 60 shots all standing for men and 40 shots for women. Winning the
men’s Gold Medal was Robert Broadstreet, of Ozark, Silver was Jack Berhorst of Lawson and Bronze was Benjamin
Estes of Ozark, Missouri. There was only 9 points between the top 4 men shooters in this event. Winning the women’s
Gold Medal was Brianna Sawyers and Silver was Sadie Evans also of Ozark Missouri. There was only 9 points between
these young ladies and this was Sadie’s first year in this event.
Air Pistol was lightly attended with 3 men and only one young lady. This event is 60 shots slow fired at 10 meters.
Taking the Gold Medal for men was Anthony McCollum of Purdin; the Silver went to Clayton Parker and the Bronze to
Dustin Camden, both of Salem, Missouri. The lone lady shooter, taking the Gold Medal was Lindsey Parker of Salem,
sister of Clayton.
PIONEER GUN CLUB – FEBRUARY 2014

Sport Pistol was the last event of the weekend. Sport Pistol is 30 shots precision and 30 shots rapid firing with turning
targets. We had 6 shooters entered in it. Three of the shooters were from Kansas and as such could not qualify for the
Missouri State medals, but needed to shoot this event in order to get invites to the National Junior Olympic Events in
April.
One young lady in particular I think all pistol shooters should know about is Lydia Paterson. Lydia shot in this event last
year and when on to the Nationals to become the youngest person ever to become part of the National Ladies Air Pistol
Team, along with winning medals in the Sport Pistol Event and Air Pistol Event. She has been written up in the USA
Shooting News and as you are reading this should be in Germany competing in Air Pistol. She has been overseas several
times now and is becoming a well-known pistol shooter. It was a pleasure having her compete in our events. Garrett
Spurgeon also showed up to visit. Garrett has been entering these events for several years and is now on the National
Junior Olympic Smallbore team. You can see pictures of both these young shooters in the USA Shooting magazine.
Winning the State Medals in Sport Pistol were Anthony McCollum with the Gold Medal and the Silver and Bronze
medals went to two of our own shooters from Pioneer Juniors. Devin Schwindt won the Silver and Noah Austin won the
Bronze Medal. Devin had never shot this event before and on the Thursday before the match, his father had brought a
Ruger MKIII from Charlie Rice, at CR Guns (a club member and thanks to him for always supporting our youth
shooting!) and practiced that night with it.
Devin and Noah, our junior members, both shot in the 3-P Smallbore and Air Rifle Events. This was the first time for air
rifle and they used borrowed sporter air rifles from MSSA to shot this Precision Air Rifle event. Although they did not
place in the medal category, I know that we will be seeing more from these young men in the future.

2014 Missouri State 3-Position Air Rifle Championship by Ed Camp
On Saturday, January 11th, we held our first State Championship in 3 position air rifle. We were a late entry with the
CMP for this event, so word got out late and we did not have many shooters. But those we did have had a good time.
Placing first in the individual class of Sporter was Devin Schwindt, of Pioneer Juniors. Second was Noah Austin,
also Pioneer, and third was Nicole Mills of the Clinton JROTC from Clinton Missouri. We had no entries in the
Precision Class of air rifle. The winning team entry was the Clinton JROTC. This was a four person team. It was
made up of 2 men and 2 women.
The MSSA Junior Director and also the CMP State Director, John Leinburger, furnished beautiful plagues for both
the individuals and the team winners. Medals from the CMP were also given out to the winners. John had, in fact,
furnished our members the sportier air rifle they used in this event. One had a leaky air cylinder and had to be kept
filled, but Devin still took first place using it.
We hope to be able to run more of these matches in the future.

The NRA Basic Personal Protection Outside the Home Class is an intermediate level-
shooting course on how to use a firearm for self-defense and requires students to have
already mastered safe gun handling and basic marksmanship skills prior to attending the
course. The course introduces the students to the knowledge, skills and attitude involved
in safely, responsibly and effectively employing a concealed handgun for self-defense. It
also covers the legal ramifications of concealed carry, including who can carry a handgun,
when concealed carry is and is not permitted, legal and ethical ramifications when responding to a life
threatening encounter using a concealed handgun and the legal, moral, emotional, and social aftermath of the
use of deadly force outside the home. In order to take this class the student must have taken the NRA Personal
Protection in the Home class or be able to pass a pre-course evaluation which includes a written test and a
demonstration of safe gun handling skills and good marksmanship. In order to receive a certificate from the
class you must attend both sessions.
Lunch: Bring a sack lunch and something to drink. There will not be enough time to go to out for lunch. There is a soft
drink machine and frozen sandwiches at the range. You may have food or drinks in the classroom during the class but
you will be expected to clean up your area at the end of the day.
What to Bring: A handgun suitable for concealed carry and a strong side hip holster for that gun, speed loaders or
extra magazines for your gun, 300 rounds of ammunition, concealed carry clothing (shirt, jacket, sports coat or vest to
conceal your firearm), pencils, pens, highlighters, and note pad, eye and ear protection, knee pads (optional), proof that
you have taken the Personal Protection in the Home class and your NRA membership card if you are a member.
Dress for the weather because we will fire no matter what the weather (unless safety is an issue). Live ammunition is
never allowed in the classroom.
Class Location: The class will be held at the Pioneer Gun Club’s McBride range south of Bates City Missouri. The
address is 900 NW 1571 Road, Holden, MO 64040. When you enroll you will be sent a map directing you to the Range.
Cost: The cost for the class is $250.00 per student.
Age limits: Students in this class must be at least 21 years of age
and be able to legally possess a firearm.
Questions: If you have additional questions please call Jack Smart
at 816-478-7033 or by Email at [email protected].

22 GAMES AND
COMPETITION December was kind of a slow month for the games, as
expected and then we missed one night because I believed the
gloom and doom weather forecast that turned out to be not true
and cancelled the Match. However we paid out $88.00 in prize
money for the month. So far in January we have paid out
$95.00 with two nights to go.
We have 32 shooters that have been classified so far this year.
[3 juniors].
I was looking back at the score records and most everyone has improved their scores from the
start of the competitions. Steve Brackeen has brought his Rifle scores from a start of 307 to a
353 and his pistol scores from a 217 to a 415. Andy went from a 295 to a 378 with the pistol.
Matt took his Pistol scores from a 379 to 429. Steve Tuttle upped his Rifle scores from a 303
to a 370 and his Pistol scores from a 405 to a 433. Our iron sight shooter Park Wood went
from a 318 to a 363 with his Rifle and 246 to 312 with the pistol. Competition WILL make
you a better shooter I guarantee it! So - if you want to shoot better come on out and join
us, we have a lot of fun for $5.00 and a box of 22 ammo. GEO.
Pioneer Lanyards are back! The Junior Program is again selling lanyards with the Pioneer Gun
Club on them. These are great for hanging your membership card on
and allowing you to keep it visible when on club property; yet easy to
take off when you leave.
This is a fund raiser for the junior program. Lanyards cost $5.00 each
and are available on meeting nights and also at the outdoor range.
Thanks for supporting our junior marksmanship program!
Call Ed Camp if you are interested in them, 816-333-7559.
