True or False?

Excused absences interfere with learning.

Even once-in-a-while absences can be a problem.

When students improve their attendance rates, they improve chances for graduating.

How to Help Ensure Good Attendance• Maintain daily routines• Establish a support network of relatives, friends,

or neighbors to take your child to school if you can’t or if your child misses the bus.

• Reinforce good attendance, don’t forget to recognize improvements in attendance.

• Stay on top of your child’s social contacts.• Avoid medical appointments and trips when

school is in session.

If You Think Your Child is Avoiding School• Rule out medical issues. • Explore why (fear of failure, anxiety about tests, being

bullied, feeling lonely).• Contact the school for support to help create a plan

for your child. • Since avoidance increases anxiety, it is important for

your child to learn how to cope with the challenge. • Golden Rule: If home during the school day, your

child should not be allowed to do anything that s/he would not be allowed to do at school. Maintain regular school schedule.

If Your Child is Absent

• Call the school’s attendance line to report the absence.

• Check in with teachers on missed instruction.• For extended absences, request Return to

Learn meeting. Ask about homebound instruction when a medical condition prevents school attendance.

• Reach out to school personnel for consultation and support when you have concerns regarding your child’s attendance.
