• SAILING RACE—This is a race across the wind (reaching) for all the crews. Thers is a sailing start with 10min & 5 min guns and the race is twice around a course of about 2 miles.

• ROWING RACE—This is a 2 mile race under oars only. 10 crew rowing with a cox and 2 assistants make up the boat compliment at all times.

Friday July 20: Boat Launch and Safety Inspection :Saturday 21: 1.30 pm Parade of Nations: The flags and colours of 16 interna-tional gig crews with local clubs and pipe bands 2.00 pm Musical Interlude: No.1 Army Band 2.30pm Opening Ceremony: By Michael D. Higgins, Uachtaran Na hEireann 4.00pm Captains Gig Colourful dressage event testing seamanship under the Captains command ... bring your camera. Viewing: Har-bour View Sunday 22 10.00am Slalom. The gigs row rudderless through a slalom course against the clock. Viewing Locations: Abbey Point 2.00 – 5.00pm Rope work Competitive rope work using tradi-tional skills and materials from the days of sail. Location: Wolfe Tone Square Monday 23 9.30 Oars & Sails. 1. A punishing race with mid course change from oars to sails. Viewing location: Air Strip Car Park, Abbey Point, Bantry Pier, Whiddy Pier 2.30pm Sailing. 1 Sixteen wooden admiralty boats under full com-petitive sail is a sight to behold. Viewing Location: Whiddy, Roadside lay-by’s between Ballylickey & Glengarriff Tuesday 24 10.00am Passage Race. A long haul test of crew and boat in the seas that defeated an armada. Viewing: Inner Harbour Sites 2.30pm Sailing 2 : Second leg of Sailing 1 Viewing Location: Whiddy, Roadside lay-by’s between Ballylickey & Glengarriff Friday 27 : 9.30 Jack Stay Transfer Skilled event transferring goods from ship to shore against the clock.Viewing: Main Pier 2.00pm Navigation :Crews abilities in traditional navigation skills are testedViewing: Harbour Area Saturday 28 11.00am Rowing Race. The final contest of Atlantic Challenge rowed at a blistering pace over a 2 mile course from Snave Bay to Bantry Pier. Viewing: Eagle Point, Bantry pier & local boat hire.
