PENTECOST SUNDAY - YEAR C 9TH JUNE 2019

Welcome everyone! Especially to the new members of our parish and to our visitors from near and far.

Embracing the Holy Spirit! At the centre of Christian faith is the great paradox: God is one, yet God is three. Our tradition also speaks of God as “three persons – Father, Son and Spirit.” But how do we know this? We know this because of the witness of Jesus’ own life and the gift of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promises his disciples.

Pentecost is the celebration of that promise when the disciples are “filled with the Holy Spirit” who upturns their lives, transforming them into teachers, preachers, evangelists and missionaries.

The testimony of St Luke in the Acts of the Apostles strains to explain this experience of the Holy Spirit in words. We are given images of a mighty wind, tongues of fire, and the disciples speaking to people from every known land in their own language!

Certainly, we cannot speak of the Holy Spirit as inde-pendent of the Father and the Son; nor should we speak of any ‘person’ of the Trinity in isolation. Too often our culture is inclined to dismiss the “spirit world” as a place of magic, sorcery and the occult. This is a danger if we isolate spiritual knowledge and mystical awareness from the loving embrace of Father, Son and Spirit.

Our Christian vocation is to be “Spirit-filled” people who rely not on our own resources but on the power of the living God. To appreciate this gift of faith is to be a mys-tic, and to live this faith is to be missionary. Pentecost was not a one-off event, but is the ongoing experience of the movement of the Holy Spirit in our world, calling us to the ever-deepening, always surprising, realisation that God is with us, God is in us, and God works through us. And so, we pray: “Come Holy Spirit”.— Gerard Hall SM © Redemptorists 2019

the community, there is much more to a faith commu-nity and large numbers of parishioners also participate generously giving their time and talents to the many ministries that enhance our parish life and that of the general community.

The sale of older school building and former convent concluded last year. From these sales, it allowed us to complete the renovations and better maintain the re-maining facilities including the former main school building where the Parish Office is located. We took the opportunity of turning two of the old classrooms into function rooms and this was not possible without the generous help of our wonderful volunteers. Alt-hough there is still ample space for other uses that may generate income into the future.

As you may be aware we have two vacant blocks of land which we are now considering of turning into res-idential units with the hope of making income for long term.

We finished the renovation of the former presbytery first quarter of last year and is now an income source. Unfortunately, based on current income sources and increased expenditure, the Parish will not be able to balance our budget in future years unless additional income is sourced. The Parish need to rely heavily on its reserves and property sales which is an issue for the long term viability of the Parish. This is an issue that we can all play a part in addressing through a re-newal of our Planned Giving Program.

Whilst we remain grateful to our existing contributors whose loyalty has helped maintain the Parish over the years, we invite those parishioners who may be new to our Parish, or Parishioners who have not been part of the program, to consider joining. Perhaps parishion-ers who are already part of the program could consid-er increasing their contribution by even a small amount, or those that may have stopped using their envelopes, make a fresh start. .

In the the next four weekends in June (Sundays 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd), you have the opportunity to renew or make a pledge. Simply fill out the gifting card and place it in the sealed box at Mass. A quick easy way to express your commitment is through the Electronic Funds Transfer systems available. This will save us the cost of envelopes. This also apply to our existing giv-ers. Please arrange this with the Parish Office or direct any questions you have.

New envelopes will be distributed in the last week of June. Annual Planned Giving Receipts will be given out in July for those existing givers.

Remember the stone rejected by the builders has be-come the cornerstone. Each of you is that new stone in Christ.

May God bless you always.

PARISH PLANNED GIVING RENEWAL 2019

On behalf of the Finance Council, I wish to thank you for your continued support of the Nambucca Valley Parish’s assets, running costs and pastoral programs through the Planned Giving Program. The Planned Giving Program is the financial contribution parishion-ers make through the second collection. The first col-lection is for the support of the clergy throughout the diocese.

The financial statement will be included in the next few week’s bulletin to give you a better understand-ing of the parish finances and operational costs. It is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve as income received from the interest on Parish reserves has de-creased significantly and the Planned Giving Program has also decreased over time. As we all know from our own experience, expenses only tend to increase.

Whilst the facilities we now have are vital to the life of
