Charles E. Gaudet, Jr. ’76Football - Men’s Ice Hockey - Baseball
Mention Charles “Chuck” Gaudet’s name in the context of Austin Prep sports history, and
everyone – classmates, teachers, coaches – has the same reaction: “Best all-around athlete of his generation.” In the early 1970s Austin Prep was still a young school that was building its sports reputation,
and Chuck was one of the students who helped establish the Cougars as an athletic force to be reckoned with. A three-sport athlete, Chuck excelled in football, ice hockey and baseball. In football, he played both quarterback and defensive back, earning a Merrimack Valley Conference All-Star honor in 1974 as a defensive back, and an MVC All-Star tag in his senior year as quarterback. In 1972, Chuck was quarterback for the undefeated freshman team, and legendary Austin Prep Football Coach Larry Klimas put his faith in him sophomore year on the varsity. Chuck did not disappoint, improving both offensively and defensively in his junior and senior years. In his senior year he was named a Boston Globe Division II All-Star, with one Globe story starting out with, “It was Chuck Gaudet Day here Saturday as the Austin quarterback ran and passed the Cougars to a 30-14 Merrimack Valley Conference victory …” He was a key member of the 1975-1976 ice hockey team that took second place in the MVC with a 16-1-1 record, and that same year – his senior year – he was named an MVC All-Star. Always a solid forward, Chuck’s playing improved greatly each year, scoring many goals and numerous hat-tricks in game after game, causing Austin Prep Coach Gary Bishop (Ice Hockey Coach of the Year in 1975) to remark to one newspaper, “Chuck Gaudet is beginning to come out of his shell.” As a baseball player, he was named an MVC All-Star in both 1975 and 1976. One of his Austin Prep Hall-of-Fame baseball teammates said “Chuck was a monster in the middle of the lineup as the leftfielder on Cougar baseball teams in 1975 and 1976.” After graduating from Austin Prep, Chuck attended the University of Pennsylvania. His professional career has been in high tech sales and he currently works for Western Digital. Previously, he coached youth sports for 10 years.

Erica L. (Barry) Geyer ’02Softball
While at Austin Prep, Erica represented the true essence of a multisport athlete, receiving
letters from four varsity sports teams – cheerleading, soccer, basketball and softball. Her leadership abilities and performances as a member of Cougar varsity softball earned her a college scholarship. A four-year varsity softball player, Erica was named MVP of the Catholic Suburban League in 2001, and a League All-Scholastic in 2001 and 2002. She has the second-highest number of runs batted in (110) in Austin Prep softball history, and was named a League All-Star three times - in her sophomore year (playing centerfield and third base), junior year, and senior year (at shortstop). In addition, Erica was selected as an All-Scholastic – twice – by both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, and helped the team win the CSL Championship in 2001 and 1998. She served as a team captain, and helped the team make it to the state tournament round each year during her four years of high school. In her freshman and sophomore years, Erica excelled on the soccer field as the varsity team’s goalkeeper, setting several school records and helping the team earn a spot in the state tournament in 1998 and 1999. She still holds the school records for most career wins (27), most single-season wins (14) and most shutouts over her career (16). Erica was also a four-year member of the girls varsity basketball team, being selected as a League All-Star in her junior and senior years and serving as captain her senior year. The basketball team also won the League Championship in her senior year and qualified for the state tournament in her junior and senior years. After graduating from Austin Prep, Erica played four years for Babson College Women’s Softball. Her team won two NEWMAC Tournament Championships (2005 and 2006) and for the first time qualified (twice) for the NCAA Division III Tournament. Erica’s team still holds the Babson school record for most victories and highest winning percentage. Currently a fifth grade teacher in Rowley, Erica coaches her daughter’s tee-ball team. She lives in Rowley with her husband, Jesse, and their children Amelia, 5, and Lincoln, 2.

Paul E. Bimmler ’09Swimming
If there is a swimming record at Austin Prep, it was set by Paul Bimmler. Of the 14 school
records in swimming for men, Paul still holds all 14 records. He has the fastest time in 10 different races, with three of them in relays. He joined the school’s swim team as a sixth-grader, and upperclassmen quickly recognized
his skill. Austin Prep practiced before school in Malden at 6:00 am, and Paul was noted for his enthusiasm and dedication. He recruited friends to join the team, and became a faster, stronger and more integral part of the team as he grew older. By the time he graduated, Paul had seven varsity letters, helped lead Austin Prep to six Catholic Central League Championships, and set 12 CCL records. In his senior year, he won both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle at the Division II State Championships. He served as a team captain, and was selected as the team MVP in his sophomore, junior and senior years. Paul was named the League MVP four times and a League All-Star six times. The Boston Globe and Boston Herald both named him an All-Scholastic twice, and in 2009 the Globe chose Paul as the Swimmer of the Year. He was also named a USA Swimming Academic All-American three times, during the three years he was eligible for the honor. After graduating from Austin Prep, Paul joined the Division I Fairfield University swim team, where he continued to earn accolades. He was one of the team captains and holds program records in the 100 Backstroke, 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle, as well as nine out of a possible 10 relay records. In 2013, he was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week. Currently, Paul is a social studies teacher for eighth- and ninth-graders at Ursuline Academy in Dedham, Massachusetts. For three years he has been an Assistant Swim Coach for the Andover/North Andover YMCA Hurricanes Swim Club and enjoys giving back to a team he once swam for.

Paige M. Christie ’11Swimming
Paige began setting swim records at Austin Prep, and hasn’t stopped yet. In her freshman and
sophomore years, she set school records for the highest finish by a female swimmer at the state championships. At the 2008 Division II state meet, she placed 2nd in the 500 Freestyle and 14th in the 200 Freestyle. She followed up in 2009 with 5th and 9th place finishes in those categories, respectively. Page helped the team capture the Catholic Central League Championships in 2008 and 2009, as well as the Dual Meet Championship titles. In her sophomore year, she received the Austin Prep Swim Coaches Award. By the time she graduated, Paige held the school records in the 500 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle, and 100 Freestyle. She anchored several relay teams to Top 10 finishes at the Division 2 state meets in 2008 and 2009. Along with three teammates Paige holds the school and Dual Meet records in the 400 Free Relay. An honors student, Senior Class Vice President, and the Paula C. Barraza ’94 Memorial Scholarship Award recipient, Paige was named a two-time All-Scholastic by the Boston Globe. In addition, she was twice selected as a Boston Globe All-Star, named a Lowell Sun All-Star, and was a two-time CCL All-Star. After graduation, Paige attended Smith College where she was a four-year member of the swim team. In her junior and senior years, she was a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Academic All-Conference selection. In her senior year, she helped the 400 Freestyle Relay place 9th in the NEWMAC Championships and was named the Smith College Athletics Woman of the Year. While still in college, Paige continued to challenge herself. Not content to stay in the pool, in 2014 she swam the English Channel at age 21 in 12 hours, 55 minutes. She further pushed herself in 2016 by completing the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim, a seven-day, 120-mile marathon, swimming an average of 17.2 miles between bridges. At age 23, Paige was the youngest in the world to complete it, and only the 6th at any age to complete every stage consecutively. In 2016, she was selected as The Eagle-Tribune’s Sportsman of the Year.

Nearly every one of Austin Prep’s 6,000 alumni have benefitted from the teaching, coaching
and wisdom of Mr. Tom Enright. In his 47 years at the school, he taught mathematics, moderated countless clubs and activities, and coached young men and women on the basketball court. When not teaching or moderating or coaching, Mr.
Enright was on the sidelines cheering on student-athletes, and in the audience applauding actors, artists and dancers. His Austin Prep Journey began while he was still a senior at Salem State College. He fulfilled his practice teaching requirement at the school and was offered a permanent position the following year. He was the varsity boys basketball head coach from 1968-1978, shepherding those young players through the early athletic years of a relatively new high school. Without a gym, teams practiced anywhere they could. They practiced on tennis courts in the cold, at small elementary schools, on Saturdays at the Charlestown Boys & Girls Club, at 6:30 am at JFK Middle School in Woburn – 24 different locations. Mr. Enright’s players said he never let them use this as an excuse. In addition to skills, his athletes learned to be loyal to their team, respect their opponents, and be good representatives of Austin Prep. Six young men were named League All-Stars under his tutelage, and the boys basketball school records for Most Free Throws in a Season, Most Free Throws in a Career, and Most Rebounds – which still stand today – happened while he was head coach. Mr. Enright was also one of the first varisty girls basketball head coaches, serving from 1995-2005. His new players benefited from the same guidance and wisdom given to their fellow alumni 20-plus years before. In his girls basketball coaching career, Mr. Enright had 102 League wins, and four League Championships, never finishing lower than second in the league. Under his coaching, 33 young women were named League All-Stars, and three were named League MVP. All of the girls basketball school records were set while he was head coach, and still remain today: Most Points in a Game, Most Points in a Season, Most Points in a Career, Most Rebounds in a Game, Most Rebounds in a Season, Most Rebounds in a Career, and Most Assists in a Game.

1988-1989 Men’s Ice Hockey Team
“We’re the team to beat. No one knows that, but we are. We believe in ourselves, and don’t believe all the doubters.”
Those are the words Head Coach Jim McAdam said to his varsity team during a meeting before the start of the 1988-1989 hockey season, and he was right. By the end of the season, his team had surprised all the critics, stunned several rivals, and brought home Austin Prep’s second hockey state championship. The team’s story begins before winter 1988, as a group of talented ninth-graders became the freshman hockey team coached by McAdam. When McAdam accepted the varsity head coaching job the next year, he brought those students with him, and continued to add talented underclassmen in the ensuing years. By the 1988-1989 season, the team was not only very skilled on the ice, but very much a family off the ice. With a team-first mentality, every game was hard-fought, and Austin Prep finished the season with a 21-4-1 record in the Catholic Central League. After losing to two-time defending state champion Matignon twice during the regular season, the Cougars beat their rival in the state semifinals, prompting McAdam to tell reporters, “It’s better than winning a million dollars!” From there, the team never looked back, clinching the Eastern Massachusetts Championship over Acton-Boxborough 3-2 – which was “better than winning two million dollars” according to the head coach – and holding the Division II State Championship trophy on the Boston Garden ice after defeating Springfield Cathedral 8-3. In the accolades that followed, the CCL named Steve Ervin ’89, Chris Scourletis ’89, and Dave Pasquale ’89 as All-Stars; and the Boston Globe named Ervin and Scourletis as All-Scholastics, selecting Ervin as Player of the Year and McAdam as Coach of the Year. Freshman goalie Dave Daddario ’92 was well on his way to earning his 39 career wins – the second most in Austin Prep men’s ice hockey history. “These are memories you just can’t buy,” McAdam said recently. “You know what? It’s still better than winning a million dollars.”
