For many students, skiing is purely recreational. For freshman Ryanne Daley ’13, however, it’s much, much more. Daley has been skiing since she was

three years old, and racing competitively since she was seven. “It’s always been something I’ve loved,” she said. “Racing down the course and crossing that finish line – there’s nothing like it.” Daley won both the giant slalom and slalom at the New England Champi-onships at Mt. Sunapee in February, helping Rivers finish third and earning herself All-New England honors. She credits coach Kim Webster with helping to motivate her and her teammates, and is excited that the Red Wings have so steadily improved over the last two seasons. Daley’s skiing success extends outside school, as well. Last winter she at-tended the Eastern J3 Junior Olympics after being selected as one of the top female skiers in the Northeast (and one of only 12 first-year varsity skiers). Over the last year, she was invited to camps through Eastern Regionals, the J3 Speedway at Sun-day River, and, this past summer, to a ski academy in New Zealand.

In a year in which she became a dominant force in the ISL, Tayra Melendez ’12 gar-nered wider acclaim when she was one of just four basketball players in the U.S. to be named to Puerto Rico’s team for the 2010 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship

for Women, which took place in June in Colorado Springs. The daughter of a horse jockey who moved to the US 20 years ago to take a job at Suffolk Downs, Melendez had long dreamed of representing Puerto Rico on the inter-national stage. One of the youngest players on the 12-person P.R. team, the 16-year-old Melendez would be forgiven for feel-ing a bit intimidated, but she has remained confident throughout the experience. And why not? Her basketball accomplishments to date speak for themselves: last year she averaged 14 points and 7 rebounds a game at Rivers, earning a spot on the New England All-Star team and the All-Independent School League team. Moreover, she helped lead the Red Wings to an impressive 20-6 season this year and a chance to repeat as New England Class B Tournament Champions, a bid that came up 1-point short in the finals. In the 2009 NEPSAC title game, Melendez’s 19 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists helped Rivers secure the victory and earned her the tournament MVP. Coach Bob Pipe says that she had already piqued interest from several Division I college basketball programs as a sophomore. “She’s a phenomenal presence on the court,” he said.

After tallying a stellar 10-3 record over the first 13 matches of the ISL season (including an 8-match win streak), the boys’ tennis team

earned the top seed in the New England Class “C” Championships in May. In front of a friendly home crowd, the Red Wings went on to capture the title, their 5th title in the last seven years. The team got strong performances from top to bottom in beating Beaver Country Day in the Saturday semi-final. Co-captain Alex Ginsberg ’10 won his singles match on Saturday to help defeat Beaver. On Sunday, TJ Moor ’12 won his singles match in straight sets, while Evan Gallagher ’11 also won his match. But it was Marco Eberth ’10 who made the afternoon when he slammed home a match-winning overhead to ultimately clinch the championship. Coach Gennady Burakovsky said that he had high hopes for the team from

the very beginning of the year.“I knew the first time I met with the team that they were dedicated and

hard-working, and eager to put themselves in a position to qualify for the tournament and also make a mark in the ISL standings,” he said. “Seemingly every week this season someone else stepped up and won a crucial set to secure a win for us, and that was terrific to see.”

The impact Jordan Greenfield ’10 has had on the Rivers lacrosse program is not hard to measure. A four-year starter and senior captain for the Red Wings, Greenfield fin-ished his career with a record-setting 97 goals and 141 assists (238 total points). A

sizeable chunk of those points came last year when, as a junior, he shattered the ISL points in one season record (90) by notching 68 assists while pumping in 38 goals for 106 points. Along the way, the attack man helped lead the 2009 Red Wings squad to

their first league title with a record of 14-1. To cap off a brilliant high school career, Greenfield was named All-American.

“Jordan is a more natural feeder. Being a goal scorer was some-thing he had to work on,’’ said Rivers’ coach Justin Walker. “There

are fewer guys who can feed the way he feeds and even fewer guys who can do both.”

In addition, Greenfield was named All-ISL for the

second straight year, led the ISL in points and assists yet again

and was selected to play in the US La-crosse 2010 Boys High School Showcase

at the ESPN Rise Games. Greenfield rounded out his array of honors by playing in the New Eng-

land prep school all-star game during which he scored 3 goals as part of the East team’s 15-14 victory over the West. Greenfield will head to Fairfield University where many expect him to make a strong contribution as a freshman.
