Profile

• Demographics collated from; Census, Ward profiles, LSOA, Big Local, CYC(IMD), The Children’s Centre(IDACI) Higher York

• Approx. no's residents 9,250 – 97% white – high student population – traveller site and residents who identify as travellers – 1460 social housing properties – sig. no's of single elderly

• Higher than York average – children in poverty, pensioners receiving pension credit, digital exclusion, childhood obesity

• Issues around high levels of household debt, payday lending, fuel poverty, binge drinking• Weekly foodbank and CAB sessions in THCC• Educational attainment by aged 19 poor, compared to York average

Making Tang Hall a better place to live and work

• TH found out it was a Big Local area December 2012 – last wave of the 150 areas• Local residents came together as a Steering Group working with BL rep• May 2013 started Facebook and Twitter accounts• No money – worked with established local community events – Student Fun Day, Summer

Fair in Hull Rd Park, THCC Open Day• Consultations – Summer Sensation over 300 – local support from residents and businesses• October 2013 – organised selection of LTO to look after money – chose TH Primary• February 2014 – received 20k getting started funds• Feb – Sept 2014 – filming project for consultation – match funded with JRF• March 2014 Community Grants

Timeline ctd

• March/April 2014 Student research project initiated via Higher York with students from UoY – looking into what businesses and older people wanted to improve in the area

• Student rep Barnaby from UoY on the Steering Committee• June 2014 – Award winning Tour de Tang Hall Organised by CYC and community groups• June 2014 – recruit community development worker for profile and plan• July 2014 – Big Gig – ex teacher and local resident Sue Williamson supported by THBL

and by Unltd – social enterprise• Local partner support – CYC communities and equalities, CYC housing, THCC shared

research• Training in CLLD – Big Local regular workshops, website, blogs etc.• Partners to Big Local – Unltd and Community Development Foundation• 2017 become charity in order to manage our own money/provide legacy/hold assets

First two year plan

Our priorities

• Well-being – crime, antisocial behaviour, health, caring, debt, building capacity to contribute – supporting CAB

• Environment – Hull Rd Park, Glen Garden, TH Primary school playing fields, green infrastructure, Osbaldwick and TH Becks

• Young People and Family Support – Parenting support, education, youth activities• Local community facilities – activities for whole community, using THCC, sports facilities,

Burnholme, meeting places, shops• Building Community Connections – connecting with community life, digital inclusion,

volunteering and training opportunities, business and enterprise, communications • Grant programme

Initial learning?

• Food – healthy food, home cooked – basis of events. People often go without. We make there is more than enough so some can take spare/leftovers home.

• Consultation – use door to door, digital, local media, local community groups, noticeboards. Awareness is growing. Our launch event in Sept had over 600

• Community Led Local Development – takes time, forms its own identity. Needs space to breathe and allow differing levels of participation

• Transparency and mutually agreed governance avoids hijacking of interests• Local partners and specialists – key local professional knowledge is vital

underpinning to help residents learn best practice, build capacity and community resilience.
