Texas 4-H is a club for kids and teens ages 5-18, and it’s BIG! It’s the largest youth de-velopment program in Texas with more than 550,000 youth each year. No matter where you live or what you like to do, Texas 4-H has something that lets you be a better you! You may think 4-H is only for your friends with animals, but it’s so much more! You can do activities like shooting sports, food science, healthy living, robotics, fashion, and photography. Texas 4-H is part of Texas A&M ArgiLife Extension Service and the Texas A&M System. Founded in 1908, 4-H is the largest youth development program in Texas, reaching more than 550,000 youth each year. In 4-H, the activities are organized by topics and called ‘projects.’ All 4-H members must be enrolled in at least one project. When you choose a project, you will learn everything there is to know about that topic. You will participate in various hands-on activities, learn new skills, do community service, or even make speeches about your project. Browse the list of projects at https://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/ to see what you would like to do. How to choose your 4-H project: Select a project you like. Select a project that can be completed. Consider the money and time it will take. Can parents/guardians help? Consider the space and equipment that you have at home. A 4-H project should be fun, serve a purpose, and be worth the effort. Texas 4-H is for kids of almost any age – grades K-2 can be in Clover Kids. From 3rd-12th grades(8 years old before September 1st), you can be in 4-H. Adults pay a $10.00 volun-teer applicant fee. Adults and youth will need to enroll on 4HConnect and be active to be considered an official member of Texas 4-H. An active enrollment is required in order to register and participate in all 4-H activities and events.

Community Service & Leadership Opportuni es Available!!  

Atascosa 4-H Fundraiser Double Trouble Steer & Heifer Prospect Show  

November 11, 2017  Dear Atascosa County 4-H Members,  

     The South Texas Double Trouble Prospect Steer and Heifer Show  is right around the corner. We need a few volunteers to help out with the show in 2017. The Double Trouble prospect show is our major fundrais-er for Atascosa 4-H Council. Proceeds from this show go to our County Council Budget and are used to purchase our prizes at our 4-H awards banquet  and help offset  the price of  individuals  going  to district  and state contests and other ac vi es.  

Friday November 10, 2017  

Need as many people as possible to help set up for the event star ng around 10:00 a.m.  

Need 1 to 2 adults to help check in animals. 

Need 1 to 2 individuals to assist individuals arriving to the show. 

Others may be needed. 

Saturday November 11, 2017 

We will need several individuals throughout the day. 

Computer personnel, Registra on Desk, Award Coordinators, Gate Personnel,  

Ring Stewards, Ribbon/Placing personnel 

 

Main Street Outreach Thanksgiving Day Dinner 

November 23, 2017 

Main  Street  Outreach Ministries  is  a  volunteer  group  from  Atascosa County.  On Thanksgiving Day, MSOM offers Turkey plate dinners to any-one in need.  Volunteers are needed for serving and distribu on.  They also  have  a  supply  dona on  list  available  for  any  group  or  individual that would like to contribute.  Please call our office if you are interested in helping the organiza on as their needs are very specific.

Texas 4-H Read, Lead, Succeed Book Drive The 2017-2018 Texas 4-H Council is encouraging local 4-H clubs to collect new or gently used children and young adult books. The books should be donated

back to your local community, schools, libraries, hospitals, etc.

Using the following link, https://fs4.formsite.com/state4h/Texas4HBookDrive/index.html please report your local participation in this community service project. Results will be shared during the 2018 Texas 4-H Roundup event June 11-14, 2018.

We plan to prepare a presentation of photos displaying the efforts from around the state, so please upload your photos when reporting.

We had a great Food Show on October 21, 2017. The results were as fol-lows: James Dickens, Mallory Fey, Gretchen Caraway and Killian Kaiser were all Junior First Place winners and will go on to District. Juniors Isa-bella Trapp and Reina Garcia were Second and Third place in the Fruit and Vegetable category. Intermediate contestants William Trapp and Evelyn Caraway were also First Place winners and will go on to District. All the recipes were great and the judges were very pleased with the inter-views. Good job members!

Congratulations to those who qualified to go on to the District Food Show. It will be held on November 18, 2017 in Alice, Texas at Alice High School (1 Coyote Trail, Alice, Texas 78332). Registration and check‐in will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. All con-testants and dishes must be in place by 8:30 a.m.

Specific details about the District 12 4‐H Food Show have been emailed to you. The packet includes rules, examples, and guidelines for participation in the District 12 4‐H Food Show. Additional resources are also available on the District 12 4-H website http://d124-h.tamu.edu. Please keep in mind that the State 4‐H Food Show information was developed for Senior 4‐H members attending State and there are district guidelines that differ slightly. Please contact Dru if you have any questions. Light refreshments will be provided for judges, volunteers and agents ONLY. Parents will be directed to a desig-nated waiting area. Parents that they are not permitted in the judging area while youth are being judged. Any food prep must be done by the 4-H member alone. FOOD SHOW SCHEDULE 8:00 am – 8:30 am Senior Registration 8:30 am- 9:00 am Participant & Judge’s Orientation 9:00 am- 12:00 pm Senior Participant Judging 1:00 pm- 1:30 pm Junior and Intermediate Registration 1:30 pm- 4:00 pm Junior and Intermediate Judging 5:30 pm Awards Ceremony (Food Show & Food Challenge) Registration, Fees & Deadline: Each 4‐Her participating in the District 12 4‐H Food Show must register online through 4‐H CONNECT. There will be a registration fee of $12.00 per contestant. Registration will open October 17, 2017 through the deadline of November 7, 2017. Counties must have all entries approved by November 7th. There will not be a late registration period. NO REFUNDS will be given to a county and/or individual. This makes it very important for registrations to be correct. Payment is due prior to the event date. If you have any questions, please call Dru or Michelle at 830-569-0036.

The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program and the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation is once again pleased to offer to our senior high school 4-H members and current college students the opportunity to apply for an Op-portunity Scholarship through the Texas 4-H Youth Develop-ment Foundation. This year Texas 4-H members can apply for scholarships in three areas, baccalaureate, courageous heart, and technical. Former Texas 4-H members will be able to apply for scholarships through the collegiate scholarship program. All applications and support materials can be downloaded from the Texas 4-H website at: texas4-h.tamu.edu

Changes for the 2018 Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship Process Texas 4-H will continue to accept both old and new versions of SAT scores for the 2018 application process. Applicants must work directly with their school administrators to ensure they have quartile ranking for their application. A quartile ranking is required to be considered for a Texas 4-H Opportunity Scholarship. Scholarship Interviews will be conducted in College Station in May, 2018. Dr. Toby Lepley will resume leadership as Scholarship Coordinator for 2018. Please direct all questions di-rectly to Dr. Lepley or your District 4-H Specialists.

Due to a continued increase in incomplete and the incorrect completion of the scholarship applications from applicants, any incomplete or incorrect application submitted will not be considered. It is the re-sponsibility of the 4-H member and parent/guardian to ensure all information is correct and complete prior to submitting. Absolutely no follow up or updates will be allowed once submitted.

Due dates and deadlines for 2018 Scholarship process are as follows: January 5, 2018 Application due to County Office April 13, 2018 Interview selection notification May 4-6, 2018 Interviews in College Station, Texas June 12, 13, &/or 14, 2018 Awards Assemblies/Banquets (College Station, TX)

Requirements for the Baccalaureate, Technical, and Courageous Heart Scholarships All applications MUST meet the minimum requirements/criteria to even be considered for judging (see guide-lines for complete details). Those applications not meeting the requirements should not be submitted to the county Extension Office and/or Agent.

Trainings The Texas A&M Collegiate 4-H Club will be hosting a face-to-face training in College Station on the campus of Texas A&M University on Saturday, November 18th from 9 am to 3 pm. Registration is $20.00 per person and sign up can be completed on 4-H CONNECT until November 15th. For other trainings check with your District 4-H Specialist to see about any district based training(s) might be held in your area.

District 12 4-H Horse Judging

The 2018 District Horse Judging Contest will be held concurrently with the San Antonio Live-stock Exposition’s (SALE) Horse Judging Contest. The event will be held on February 12, 2018 in San Antonio on the show grounds in the Expo Hall. The contest will be open to all three age divisions and follow the same guidelines outlined in the Texas 4-H Roundup Rules and Guidelines as they relate to this contest. It is important to re-member that the SALE Horse Judging Contest Rules will also apply. Registration: There will be a dual registration for partici-pants in this contest to be included as part of the District competition. Contestants will have to pay 2 separate fees. Entry requires comple-tion of both listed below. 1) Each participant must be registered on 4-H Connect. Registration will be open from 11/7 through 12/1. Fee is $12. 2) SALE registration fee will also apply. Check with your club manager for more infor-mation.

The contest will be held in the Expo Hall on the SALE show grounds. Sign-in will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

What to Bring: All contestants should bring the following to the contest: • Clipboard (no compartments) • Several sharpened #2 pencils & erasers • Blank paper for note-taking • Social Security Number to put on SALE registration form (SALE requires this)

2018 District 12 4-H Shooting Sports Archery Match The District 12 4-H Shooting Sports Archery Match (Modified 600 & 3-D) will be held on December 9, 2017 at the Duval Shooting Complex in Benavides. This important date change (moved from June to De-cember) was made in concert with feedback received at the June 2017 match and feedback from county Extension agents that are involved and support this project area and event. Based on this change, the format of the two events (simultaneous events) at this match may change as well.

Event Registration - Registration for this event will be open to all counties in District 12. Counties are not limited in the number of 4-H members that register from their county. Registration will take place on 4-H Connect and must be done by individual 4-H members. Coaches will not be able to register members as was done with the Postal League earlier this year. Registration will be open from November 6th through No-vember 28th at $16 per event (Modified 600, & 3-D) or $30 for both. There will not be a late registration period or on-site registration. All contestants must be registered by the dates specified above.

Archery Match Information – Texas 4-H Archery Rules apply except as noted in the District 12 4-H Shooting Sports Match: Guiding Principles and Contest Rules. Please make every effort to read this letter and rules carefully. There will be only 3 distances in the Modified 600 Match. 3 Age Divisions based on grade Juniors – (3rd - 5th) Intermediates – (6th - 8th) Seniors – (9th - 12th) Schedule – This is a 1-day event with both matches on Saturday, December 9th based on the following schedule:

Archery Matches (Modified 600 & 3-D) – Saturday, December 9th

8:00-8:30 am Registration & Equipment Inspection (bring your bow and arrows to the registra-tion table for inspection) 8:30-9:00 am Mandatory Orientation & Safety Meeting 9:00 am Match Begins Seniors – Modified 600 match first, followed by 3-D Juniors & Intermediates – 3-D match first, followed by Modified 600

No late starts. Archers must be there on time. There will not be a specific lunch break. Location & Facilities – The Duval Shooting Complex will host the Archery Match. Participants are welcome and encouraged to bring their own food/refreshments. It is important to note that there is no running water or electricity at the facility, however, portable restrooms will be available. Participants are welcome to bring RV’s (plenty of space) but there are no hookups for electricity, water, or waste. They may also bring their own pow-er supply. Participants may bring shade tents but must ensure they are anchored properly and adequately to prevent any risk of wind tossing them about. T-Shirt - A custom-designed Shooting Sports Archery Match t‐shirt is available to be purchased by anyone online and will be distributed to agents at the event. All pro-ceeds from shirt sales are used to support District 12 4‐H Events and Council leadership and service activities. T-Shirt prices start at $15.00 plus tax at http://d124-h.tamu.edu/store/. La Parita 4-H dedi-cated their time for a One Day 4-H activi-ty at Wings and Reigns Equine Res-cue in Devine, TX. Members helped with cleaning up the property to make room for more res-cue animals who came in after the devastation of Hur-ricane Harvey.

Lytle 4-H Club members partici-pated in One Day 4-H by spending the morning with the residents at the Lytle Nursing Home playing games and giving manicures!

The Atascosa County Equine Enthusiasts 4-H club helped refill the shelves of the C.A.M. (Christian Aided Ministries) in Poteet after their stock was depleted helping those affected by Hurricane Harvey. This is part of the club’s annual commitment to community service. ATTN: Livestock Show Exhibitors

SAVE THE DATE NOV. 3, 2017 is the Due Date for Entry Forms for County & Major Stock Show Entries! Please plan accordingly.

We are now taking entries for the Atascosa County 4-H Livestock Show and the Major shows – San Antonio, Austin, Houston, etc. You will need to come by the Extension Office from now until November 3rd. We will be staying open until 7pm on November 2nd to accom-modate those who may have trouble getting to our office during the 8am to 5pm hours. We have copies of all entry forms and other paperwork. If you are a 4-H Junior or Intermediate you will need a Quality Counts number and if you are 14 and up you will need to re-test and receive a new number. Bring the following to the office if you are entering any shows be-yond the county: birthdate, social security number, quality counts number and the correct change or a check to pay for your entries. We don’t keep any cash at our office and we can’t accept credit or debit cards. Don’t forget about the Skilllathon, Public Speaking and other con-tests!

2018 Atascosa County Livestock Show

The 2018 ACLS Constitution and Rules are updated and posted to their website. We want to make sure and share it with you. It is posted on the Atascosa County Junior Livestock Show webpage at

The 2018 Judges list and schedule is posted on their website. Start making plans.

Quality Counts verification will be required for all youth ex-hibiting livestock (market and/or breeding) at major livestock shows in Texas (including the Ft. Worth Livestock Show, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show and Ro-deo, Star of Texas Fair in Austin, San Angelo Livestock Show, Sandhills Stock Show in Odessa, State Fair of Texas in Dallas, and Heart O’ Texas Fair in Waco).

The verification process will require 4-H exhibitors to pass an online test that measures their knowledge on quality assurance and character education content items. All 4-Hers must take this test but only twice in their 4-H career; once as junior and once as senior division. Quality Counts test and more information availa-ble at http://agrilife.org/qualitycounts/verification/.

“No Pass No Play In order to participate in any 4-H sponsored event including stock shows, shooting sports, or food show, members must be enrolled with one of our area clubs and meet the 50% attendance re-quirement prior to the contest. Participation in any competition or shooting sports event is only permitted while meeting eligibil-ity criteria under Texas Educa-tion Code 33.081 “No Pass No Play.

CONSERVATION ESSAY CONTEST - 2018 The Atascosa County Soil & Water Conservation District #307 is again sponsoring a Conservation Essay Con-test for Atascosa County students. This contest is open to Atascosa County students in the following age divisions:

JUNIOR: Ages 13 years and under (maximum of 300 words)

SENIOR: Ages 14 to 18 (maximum of 500 words).

The topic for this year’s contest is “Healthy Soils are Full of Life” Please use the Current Theme of the contest. More detailed information on the theme will be posted on the website http://www.nacdnet.org/general-resources/stewardship-and-education-materals/2017-healthy-soils/

As you write your essay, you should remember

—write about soil and water conservation practices

—make your writing interesting to the reader

—make sure that each sentence you write helps the reader understand your essay

—make sure that your ideas are clear and easy for the reader to follow

—write about your ideas in detail so that the reader really understands what you are saying

—check your work for correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and sentences

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place plaques will be awarded for each division with up to the best three being forwarded to Temple, Texas, to be entered into the Texas Conservation Awards Program. An overall winner will be selected and a plaque presented at the local Annual Awards Program and Dinner on June14, 2018. (NOTE: By entering this contest, students agree to release the name of their parents, home address, and telephone number to the District for the sole purpose of forwarding District winning entries to Area competition and for an invitation to the annu-al Awards Program.)

The essay is due in the Atascosa County SWCD office located at 107 Wyoming Blvd. in Pleasanton on Friday, Jan-uary 12, 2018. All essays must have a cover sheet with the Title, Name, Age, and School.

CONSERVATION POSTER CONTEST- 2018

The Atascosa County Soil & Water Conservation District is again sponsoring a Conservation Poster Contest for all Atascosa County students, grades 1st through 6th

(age 12 & under). This does not jeopardize Texas University Interscholastic League eligibility. It is our inten-tion that this be a voluntary program. We encourage

all teachers to use this as a classroom aid. To avoid too much help from parents and others, it is suggested that the posters be prepared in the classroom rather than in the home.

The following are the rules and guidelines pertaining to the contest:

1. Students may enter posters that pertain to this year’s contest theme which is “Healthy Soils are Full of Life.” Please use the Current Theme of the contest. 2. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place plaques will be awarded for each grade level with up to the best three being for-warded to Temple, Texas, to be entered into the Texas Conservation Awards Program. An overall winner will be selected and a plaque presented at the local Annual Conservation Awards Program and Dinner on June 14, 2018. 3. Poster entries should be drawn on standard poster board. Note: poster board should be cut to half size – 22” X 14”. (No construction paper.)

4. Artwork on entries should be produced with materials that do not readily smear, crack, or chip. A fixative or lamination may be used. The poster entry artwork surface should be flat.

5. Poster is to be identified by Name, School, Grade, and Room, all of which is to be printed on back of the poster. (Do not place child’s name on front of poster.) Posters will be judged on conservation message, neatness, and originality.

6. Posters will be due in the Atascosa County SWCD office located at 107 Wyoming Blvd in Pleasanton on Friday, January 12, 2018. For more information, contact Sherry at 830-569-2232, Ext 101.
