COCKPIT DOOR SURVEILANCE SYSTEM (CDSS)
History
The ICAO monitoring standard has been incorporated into German regulations, applicable to German commercial aircraft with more than 60 passengers ortakeoff weight of more than 45.500 kg, according to the Luftfahrt--Bundesamt(LBA), Germanys civil aviation authority.
Most of the current aeroplanes are [or will be] equipped with a videomonitoring system which incorporates video cameras in the entrance area and[one or more] video screens next to the pilots station in the cockpit, says anLBA official. But it is also possible to fulfill the requirement using other means.Theoretically, a permanent third crew member, tasked with monitoring thecockpit entrance through a viewing port in the door----in combination withappropriate communication procedures----may also provide an acceptablemeans of compliance.
Story
Manufacturer: Goodrich Corporation.
The systems will provide real--time video monitoring of the cockpit door entryand forward galley areas to flight crews.
In addition to installations on new aircraft, the award could generate substantialrevenue for the retrofit of aircraft currently in the active fleet.
The Cockpit Door Video Surveillance System consists of a color display withintegrated video computer, three video cameras and a system controller.
An infrared light source built into the video cameras allows video monitoring in0.0--lux lighting conditions.
The system can be expanded to passenger cabin monitoring through the use ofan ARINC 600--style video computer capable of up to 16 additional video andaudio inputs, and 4 additional video outputs.
This system is designed to provide real--time cabin video monitoring of thefirst--class passenger cabin during takeoff and landing.
System Components
The CDSS has the following main components:
3 Cameras,
2 Monitors,
1 CDSS ON/OFF switch and
1 System Control Unit.

Description and Operation
General
The Cockpit Door Surveillance System (CDSS) uses cameras in the cockpitentrance and in the door 1 area. They let the flight crew monitor the door 1 area and identify persons at thecockpit door.
System Description
The CDSS has the following main components: 3 Cameras,
2 Monitors,
1 CDSS ON/OFF switch and
1 System Control Unit.
Cameras
The cameras have a 90 degree viewing--angle and use 12VDC power.Camera 1 gives images of the area directly in front of the cockpit door.
Camera 2 gives images of the left door--1--area and camera 3 of the rightdoor--1--area.The signal for the images is sent to the selected monitor via theSystem Control Unit (SCU).The 12VDC power comes from the SCU.
Monitors
The monitors let the Captain and First Officer see the images from the selectedcamera(s). The monitors have a touch screen for different selections e.gautomatic camera selection, manual camera selection, brightness. The monitors use 12VDC power which comes from the SCU.
CDSS ON/OFF Switch
When the ON/OFF switch is pushed (OFF legend is off and aircraft electricalpower is available) 28VDC goes to the SCU.The switch has an OFF and a FAULT legend to show when the system is off orwhen there is a fault detected in the CDSS.
OFF Legend
The OFF legend is on when CDSS is set to off (CDSS ON/OFF switch ispushed).
FAULT Legend
The FAULT legend is on when the CDSS ON/OFF switch is pushed(OFF legend is off) and when:
the circuit breakers are (is) not closed or
the system control unit (9100RY) senses an internal fault.
System Control Unit(SCU)The SCU processes input signals from the cameras to provide the necessaryoutputs signals for the monitors. It also changes the 28VDC input power to the 12VDC necessary for thedifferent CDSS components. The SCU provide the necessary fault output for the fault indication in the CDSSON/OFF pushswitch (FAULT legend).
