Alabama Trucking Association’s 77th Annual Convention & Membership Meeting

Welcome to Destin!Dear Conventioneer,

What a great meeting we have lined up for you. Morethan a year’s worth of planning went into making this con-vention one to remember — and hopefully one of our bestever. Some things are just worth the effort, and this event isdefinitely a labor of love and purpose. On behalf of Alabama Trucking Association Chairman of

the Board Wayne Watkins, our Board of Directors, the2015 Convention Finance Committee, the ATA staff, andour many gracious sponsors, I thank you for choosing tospend time with us this week. These days, Alabama’s trucking industry is hitting on all

cylinders. And as a result, our Association has realized manyvery important milestones in the last five years. We’ve remod-eled and expanded our headquarters meeting space; sus-tained strong membership growth; increased member sup-port; impacted Alabama’s political climate; defeated orreversed unfair taxation and regulation on trucking business-es; worked to make our state more supportive of small busi-nesses; and more importantly, done our part to make stateroadways better and safer for all users. Those successfulendeavors got their start at ATA gatherings like Convention. The underlying mission at any professional group gather-

ing is to reconnect with those we share a common bondfor our livelihood. Our Convention is about trucking inAlabama – nothing more, nothing less. Sure, we are at oneof the most beautiful locations in the Southeast, and grant-ed there will be a lot of good times, but make no mistake:We are here to work for Alabama trucking businesses likeyours! This meeting is the one time each year when we cangather to confront and address the issues that face us.There’s so much planned, and this booklet gives you all

the highlights and information needed to get the most from

your time here. As you thumb through its pages, pleasetake careful notice of all the corporate sponsors listed.More than 100 businesses donated generously to our2015 Convention. Thanks to all them for their continuedsupport of the Alabama Trucking Association.I’d also like to thank the 2015 Convention Finance

Committee who worked many hours to secure funding forthis event. These men and women care deeply for ourAssociation, and their connections to the industry are strongand meaningful. These leaders are Joe Black, McGriff Tire;Rhonda Bees, Shoreline Transportation of Alabama, LLC;Gary Bond, BancorpSouth Equipment Finance; Jack Brim, B. R. BUSINESS BREAKFAST & MEETINGFriday 8:30-11:00 a.m. Coastal Ballroom

Breakfast is sponsored by

Our meeting starts with a working breakfast in the Coastal Ballroom where attendees will hear twoimportant presentations to make us think about our role in the trucking industry beyond the daily

grind of operating a successful business. First up is Kylla Lanier, deputy director and co-founder of Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), a

Colorado-based non-profit organization that seeks to educate, equip, empower and mobilize membersof the trucking industry about the critical role they can play in fighting human trafficking. The AlabamaTrucking Association recently signed up to support this group’s important mission. Human traffickingand forced labor (such as drug trafficking and prostitution) are among the most destructive crimes inthe U.S. Mrs. Lanier has been involved in the fight since 2007, when she helped initiate a state coalitionagainst trafficking in Oklahoma. Today, she focuses on bringing attention of these terrible crimes totruckers across the country. Please don’t miss this important discussion.

A fter a brief intermission, best-selling author and inspiration for the movie “Black Hawk Down”retired Chief Warrant Officer Four Michael Durant will tell his moving and heart-racing account of

life in the line of fire as an Army helicopter pilot shot down in 1993 as part of Operation Gothic Serpentduring the Somali Civil War. Little did he know that when he entered the Army in 1979 one day hewould be the target of a Somali-fired grenade launcher, a prisoner of war, and the subject of anacclaimed book and major motion picture. Durant’s story is a tense one that describes vividly his experi-ence as a soldier and a hostage, and what it taught him about being an American and a leader.

Signed copies of Mr. Durant’s book, In the Company of Heroes,

CHAIRMAN’S RECEPTION & DINNERSaturday 6:30-9:00 p.m. Emerald Ballroom

Dress is Sunday attire. (Coat & tie for men, Sunday dress for women).

C apping this year’s Convention is a reception and dinner honoring current ATAChairman of the Board Wayne Watkins, President of Watkins Trucking Co. in

Birmingham, Ala. Chairman Watkins is a hands-on leader who isn’t afraid to work hard for what he

believes. A lifelong trucker, he knows the business as well as anyone. He’s known for see-ing the big picture for trucking, but also knows the crucial details needed to be successful. At the start of his term, he vowed to improve the Association’s overall standing as

Alabama’s preeminent voice for the trucking industry. His agenda included initiatives to bol-ster member services, increase existing membership involvement with ATA events and spe-cial projects — especially among trucking firms; fortify and improve the industry’s publicimage for economic development, and encourage industry safety and professionalism. Hedid that, and our Association is better because of his leadership. Also, we will recognize this year’s Alabama Truck Driver of the Year, longtime Golden

Flake Transportation employee Benny Lewis and his wife Flossie. Mr. Lewis was recentlyselected by the ATA Safety and Maintenance Management Council for his commitment toindustry safety and professionalism in a career that has spanned nearly five decades. Another highlight of this event is the announcement of this year’s winner of the H.

Chester Webb Award, which is this Association’s highest honor for a member. Last year’swinner Gail Cooper of Boyd Bros. Transportation will announce the winner. And lastly, we have a really special treat that we think you will love. Trust us on this one.

It’s a bit of a surprise, so sit back and enjoy your dinner, but keep your eyes peeled.Sometimes things aren’t as they appear.
