Explosive gases, toxic sludge and aggressive chemicals: Work in water treatment plants, sewer systems, tanks or pipelines is often dangerous. Potentially hazardous situations such as explosive gases, toxic sludge or aggressive chemicals lurk in every corner. At your side in the Water Treatment Industry ST-3470-2004 For more than 100 years, Dräger has provided reliability and durability for the detection and protection against volatile chemicals and gases. Keep your workers and facilities safe, with a full range of products including personal gas monitoring, personal protective equipment, stationary gas detection and escape devices. PROTECTION FOR ANY HAZARD It is essential to protect employees from contaminated effluents and residues. In addition, they face direct contact with corrosive substances that are used in water treatment plants such as chlorine compounds, sulfuric acid, ammonia, potassium hydroxide and other hazardous materials. Dräger offers a large range of chemical protective suits, respiratory protection and breathing apparatuses - each tailor made to suit a wide range of application areas so you can get the exact protection you need. GAS DETECTION AND MEASUREMENT One of the main challenges of the water treatment industry is containing flammable gases and vapors, which can occur at various stages of the water treatment process. Precise and dependable gas monitoring protection against explosions is another key challenge for safety management. From stationary gas-warning systems to mobile gas- measuring devices, the gas-measuring equipment from Dräger offers you modern technology with highly accurate sensors. TRAINING SOLUTIONS Confined space entry is an everyday task in much of the water treatment industry. Hazards for workers entering these enclosed spaces can range from insufficient ventilation to harmful substances. Therefore, it is important that employees are well trained in proper confined space entry procedures. Our qualified trainers can work with you to develop a training course best suited for you and your business. By using our Mobile Training Trailer (D-Pod), our courses can be hosted in locations which are most convenient to you. During the course employees will learn and practice safe working in confined spaces. SERVICE With service facilities strategically located across Australia we are large enough to cover the entire country, whilst remaining local enough to offer the professional service your organisation deserves. Dräger can also provide: Rescue equipment Fall protection equipment (Harness, tripods, lanyards & winches) Test equipment (For a range of different devices) Rental and safety services (equipment and personnel) For more information about safety solutions available for your business visit our website at: www.draeger.com/water-treatment or e-mail us at [email protected]

TANK FARMS | 64 | TANK FARMS

CHALLENGES

Storing a large amount of hazardous product can be dangerous. Tanks are designed and constructed to withstand enormous pressure, from potentially corroding substances from the inside, and adverse environmental conditions from the outside. Depending on the market situation, they have to be flexible enough to store different products at different times. While there is no dangerous process such as refining taking place, operators have to take into account several risk scenarios and plan accordingly. Pumps and pipelines could fail, resulting in spillage of product. Tanks could be accidentally overfilled, or catastrophic loss of containment could occur due to structural failure. Finally, leakage of products with low flash points can easily ignite, and natural phenomena such as lightning strikes can also contribute.

HAZARDS & RISKS

Loss of primary containment, e.g. due to overfilling or leaks, can result in the creation of a hydrocarbon vapour cloud and an explosion, which can have disastrous consequences to both workers and assets. Toxic liquids and gases can also result in adverse effects on workers’ health and the environment. Secondary bund walls may not be enough to contain larger spills which may then extend beyond the boundaries of the tank farm. The financial burden of these incidents can be enormous, resulting in shutdown, cleanup, restoration and other liability-related payments. Integrated early-warning systems such as independent high-level alarms and gas detection can help to terminate or divert receipt and prevent larger-scale spills and hazardous situations.

Daily OperationsOperations in tank farms differ fundamentally from process facilities such as refineries, as the former leaves the product it is storing untouched to a large degree.

THE TASK

To clean a tank, most of the time it is necessary to actually enter it. Hazards for the workers who go into the tank can be a result of the enclosed space, insufficient ventilation and harmful substances.

Before the operation starts, the tank is emptied asmuch as possible and mechanically cleaned fromoutside to reduce manual work to a minimum. A gasanalyst then conducts a clearance measurement andmonitors the atmosphere continuously afterwards.

During the cleaning operation one or two workers remove any remaining crude oil or the remnants of other chemicals.

HAZARDS & RISKS

In tank cleaning in a refinery, hazardous substancesare mostly in form of liquids or particles. Hazards forthe worker derive from toxic gases and vapors fromremaining materials in the tank vessel. Inhalation of these gases/vapours as well as skin or eye contact should to be avoided. Long-term effects could be harmful even at low concentrations as carcinogenic or mutagenic effects are possible. A potential explosion caused by some materials is possible when their character is unstable or the temperature inside the tank is high. Here, an immediate danger for the worker‘s life and health is apparent.

Tank CleaningTanks are exposed to corrosive substances from inside and diverse environmental influences from the outside. They require different storage approvals, thus have to be cleaned and maintained regularly.
