Welcome to the 14th Annual Design on the Delaware at NeoCon East Conference!

We are constantly evolving Design on the Delaware to provide our attendees with a conference experience that rivals the AIA National Convention but at a fraction of the cost. As always, we are providing the high level multi-disciplined programming that you are used to, but we’ve added a few extras that we think will really up the ante.

In the second year of our partnership with NeoCon East, the premier design expo and conference for commercial interiors on the East Coast, Design on the Delaware attendees will enjoy complimentary access to NeoCon East Keynote sessions as well as free pass to walk the amazing tradeshow floor filled with hundreds of vendors. This year’s NeoCon East Keynotes feature Marc Kushner, Co-Founder and CEO of Architizer & Partner of New York Architecture Firm HWKN and Ayse Birsel, Co-Founder Of Birsel + Seck, an Innovative Design Studio in New York. We hope you’ll have a chance to take advantage of this great partnership and extend your knowledge and your network!

New this year, there will be much more activity at the Center for Architecture and Design. Following the model we created for AIA Convention 2016, there will be a lot going on at the Center. Design on the Delaware conference attendees will receive free coffee and breakfast in the morning, lunch in our expo lounge, free wifi, and social events in the evenings. As an added bonus, you’ll be able to register at both the Center and the Pennsylvania Convention Center, whichever makes the most sense for your schedule.

We hope you enjoy the 2016 Design on the Delaware at NeoCon East and can take advantage of the new format by carving out some time to visit us at the Center for Architecture and Design. If you haven’t seen the space since the renovations were completed, you really must check it out!

November 9, 8:00 - 9:00 amHoward Neukrug, PE, BCEE, Hon. D.WRE Principal, CASE Environmental LLC Mr. Neukrug is a national expert, lecturer and inspirational leader in integrated water systems; urban planning and sustainability; utility operations; water policy; and green infrastructure. He is the creator of Philadelphia’s $2.5 Billion “Green City, Clean Waters” program which has revolutionized how American cities approach land and water management for sustainability and resiliency. He is the former Commissioner and CEO of Philadelphia

Water, where he was responsible for all aspects of utility operations, environmental compliance, engineering, financing, budgeting, capital and strategic planning, customer service, human resources, and legal and policy decisions for its $1 Billion water/wastewater/stormwater system. He is currently a Senior Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania where he is establishing a Regional and Global Water Policy Center and is a Principal with CASE Environmental LLC where he provides consulting services to cities and utilities in civil engineering, urban planning, sustainability, organizational development, strategic planning and trends and innovations in the global water industry. He is an advisor to the US EPA and the National Science Foundation and an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches courses on “The Water Industry in the 21st Century,” “Water, Science and Politics,” and “Sustainable Cities.”

November 10, 8:00 - 9:00 amRobin Guenther, FAIA, LEED FellowPrincipal, Perkins + Will Robin Guenther, FAIA, LEED Fellow, is Principal of Perkins+Will and Senior Advisor to the non-profit Health Care Without Harm. Robin works at the intersection of health care architecture, health, and sustainable policy and participates in a wide range of leading edge advocacy initiatives while continuing to practice.

Healthcare Design magazine named her the “#1 Most Influential Designer in Healthcare” in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, Fast Company included her as one of the “100 most creative people in business.” She was a TEDMED 2014 speaker and keynoted the 2014 AIA National Convention.

She co-coordinated the Green Guide for Health Care, served on the LEED for Healthcare committee, and co-authored “Sustainable Healthcare Architecture.” She was a founding member of the Health Product Declaration Collaborative, and co-authored the 2014 US Dept of Health and Human Services Sustainable and Resilient Healthcare Infrastructure Toolkit.

This panel led discussion will provide an overview and introduction to architectural and engineering ethics. It will cover state registration and licensing laws. It will also cover conflict of interest, pay-to-play and discuss case-studies.

Mr. Davies’ practice focuses on the representation of engi-neers, architects, and other design professionals, as well as manufacturers of complex products.

Mr. Potter serves as general counsel to AIA Pennsylvania and is frequently called upon to provide seminars for design professionals on loss prevention, standard form construction contract documents, and construction litigation.

Tom Normile, PEKeast & Hood Co.

Mr. Normile is a principal of Keast & Hood where for the last twenty years he has led the structural design work on a diverse array of projects. He has served as president of the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Concrete Institute, director of the Delaware Valley Association of Structural Engineers, and treasurer of the Carpenters’ Company of the City and County of Philadelphia.

Michael Prifti, FAIABLT Architects

Mr. Prifti is an architect of significant diversity with architectural experience in new construction and adaptive re-use projects for development clients, with single-purpose and mixed-use programs. In addition to his role as Managing Principal for BLTa, Mr. Prifti is actively involved in AIA, and is a trustee of the AIA Trust. He has held numerous roles including those within the National Ethics Council.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Design on the Delaware at NeoCon East will offer 3 general sessions, 33 programs and 17 tours. Course topics include design, high performance buildings, professional practice, building technology, green schools, planning, preservation, landscapes, urban and suburban planning, codes and zoning, and more. All programs and tours will offer AIA CES/CEU credits. To receive credits or a letter verifying attendance, you must sign in at each course attended and enter your AIA member number. If you do not sign in, you will not receive credit.If you are not a member of AIA, please indicate your profession, member number if applicable, and provide your email address. Anyone who doesn’t provide this information will be charged a $35 processing fee.


CONTINUING EDUCATION

ARCHITECTS: All sessions provide AIA/CES Continuing Education Hours. Most states with continuing education requirements accept AIA registered courses. Please note that Delaware requires all courses be HSW approved. For more information on requirements in all states, go to http://www.aia.org/education/ces/mcerequirements.

ENGINEERS: Pennsylvania requires engineers to earn CEU credits. Credit determination is the responsibility of the licensee. The expectations of LED lighting have grown as the improvements in technology allow for smaller lighting fixtures. How can the U.S. bring nature, creativity, and risk-taking back to the play spaces we’re designing? The Community Design Collaborative and the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC) sought creative answers to that question through the Play Space initiative. We’ll talk about why it’s important to focus on play space now, discuss the results of a yearlong efforts to bring together the diverse stakeholders of play space, and present the winners of the Play Space Design Competition.

The new criteria of the Red List, Embodied Carbon Footprint, and Living Economy Sourcing at first can seem like a daunting task. To help educate designers, contractors, and developers, Re-Vision has develop a material research methodology that explains how to set your team up for success when tackling this subject. We will show you this six step method and applying it to the design process to see how it can fit into a project schedule.

As energy codes become more stringent, project teams are required to design buildings with lower energy use thresholds. Owners are increasingly demanding justification for architectural designs and challenging designers to make buildings more efficient and cost-effective to operate. Often, energy modeling is done too late in design, or performed during construction to assist in post-validating the design. But, significant savings can be found, both in energy and construction costs, by right-sizing the enclosure and glazing design with the mechanical systems. These lessons will be illustrated through several examples of buildings completed in the Philadelphia Navy Yard within the past few years. With perspectives from the architect, mechanical engineer, and building owner, this presentation demonstrates methodologies for implementing rapid-response modeling early in the design process and takes an iterative approach to modeling design feedback.

The Bell Laboratories building was one of Eero Saarinen’s last major commissions. The original building was constructed between 1959 and 1962 and later expanded in 1966 and 1982 by Roche and Dinkaloo. It served the needs of the Bell Laboratories division of Bell Telephone, and its successor companies, until it was put up for sale by Alcatel-Lucent in 2006. The two-million square foot building remained empty and unused until 2013 when it was purchased by Somerset Development who as part of their planned adaptive reuse, has worked to get the building listed as an historic landmark.

The adaptive reuse of prominent abandoned facilities has positively contributed to the sustainability and vitality of industrial landmarks. In this session we will look at the adaptive reuse of two landmarks of different scales that have equally provided positive impact on both a local and regional level. The Bethlehem Steel plant was a powerful symbol of America’s manufacturing leadership in the Industrial Revolution. Integral to the historic function of the plant, the newly repurposed elevated rail named the Hoover-Mason Trestle creates a dynamic opportunity for the community to once again stand at the foot of the majestic and iconic blast furnaces. The transformation of the historic High Pressure Fire Service Building at the foot of the Ben Franklin Bridge into the new headquarters for FringeArts represents a keystone in Philadelphia’s efforts to revitalize its waterfront. The blending of the reuse of this infrastructural building with a new dynamic interactive arts program represents an innovative continuation of the city’s significant industrial legacy.

East Market – 1100 Market Street Phase 1 is an 18 story mixed used building with centralized underground parking and loading located in Center City Philadelphia. 1100 Market Street is part of a larger overall complex that spans a full city block. Unique to this project is the Pedestrian walkway, through the middle of the site, Chestnut Walk that will link Market Street to Ludlow Street. 15 levels of residential units with an indoor/outdoor amenity level available to all residents sits atop 2 levels of retail. Currently under construction, the building consists of steel framing with composite concrete decks up through Level 003 and switches to Precast concrete hollow core plank up through the rest of the building. Once completed, the east portion of 1100 Market will consist of 321 residential units with nearly 60,000 sf of retail space. Walking tour, tour will meet at City Hall, North Portal.

First stop is the Italian Market, a unique neighborhood. This hybrid project occupies the cusp between warehouse mercantile buildings and typical 15’ wide rowhomes. This Zero Energy Ready/ Passive House single family home is perched atop a former warehouse, now the owner’s “man-cave” automobile hobby shop. The new warehouse roof provides a raised platform with front and rear deck (yards) and boast a 25’ wide double height glazed façade (a rarity in Philadelphia) creating a dramatic living room with balconied media room. A sculptured sunshade structure animates the façade. This element alone has an interesting journey from design to fabrication. Second stop is the Rittenhouse historic district. This 1845 Late Victorian style 4-story mid-block rowhome building has 4 units. One unit to remain occupied during renovations. The fronts on Pine Street façade is composed of dense, high-quality brick with thin butter joints and marble trim: the rear elevations on Waverly Street, a service alley, are exposed lower quality brick, with standard mortar joints.The project seeks to drastically reduce the entire building’s energy profile and carbon footprint. The ground floor office will be converted into a bi-level apartment for the owners. The upper apartments will be upgraded with new mechanical systems, new bathrooms and the 2nd flr with a new kitchen. Passive House (PH) certified simulated double-hung windows will grace the front and PH casements in the rear. The project is setting precedents with the Philadelphia Historical Commission in several areas. Walking tour, tour will leave from the Center for Architecture and Design.

The CHOP Schuylkill Phase I Project is located at 2716 South Street, Philadelphia, PA. The project is designed by Ballinger and is a Joint Venture between L.F. Driscoll Co., LLC and Tishman Construction. At 703,000 SF, the project includes the construction of a new Class A Office Tower to be used by The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for Clinical Research and Administrative Office programs. The first two floors of the Tower include the main lobby space, conference rooms, food service facility, and seating areas to accommodate building occupants and conference attendees. The project also includes the construction of a pedestrian bridge to span from the promenade plaza over the CSX tracks to the Schuylkill River trail. Hat, vest, safety glasses and appropriate footwear are required. Extras may be available. Waiver form is required upon arrival. Walking tour, tour will meet meet at CHOP Schuylkill Tower.
