I was raised in a nice, quiet, remote part of Long Island, New York, in a little town called Shelter Island. It was very quaint and mostly for second-home owners and the elite. I went there at age 8 and lived there until age 15, visit- ing during most of my life, as my grandparents owned a home there. Little did I know how much this place would affect my life, still having an impact upon me today. You see, I was drinking the hard water from a well system that was loaded with heavy metals, namely mercury and lead. By the age of 19, after years of consuming the local water, vegetation and seafood, I found myself in a crisis stabilization unit under the care of a doctor in Florida, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. I was given various kinds of drugs for treat- ment—something was obviously wrong with my central nervous system and brain. Back in 1989, there was little yet known about chelation therapy and the removal of heavy metals from the body and brain tissues. I met a holistic physician in Boston at the age of 23 who told me I did not have bipolar disor- der, but a Lithium toxicity, because I had been on Lithium since age 19. He recommended a cleansing program based on the genotype diet and suggested I take alfalfa tablets, stop consuming all wheat, dairy, shellfish, sugar, alco- hol and tobacco, and drink only distilled water. In addition, he gave me an herbal powder containing slippery elm, oat bran, ginger and senna to heal my digestion track. Over the years, I kept in touch with this doctor, mostly for support and consultation. In 2000, he retired in Livingston, MT. Last year, in June of 2011, I came to see him again and thanked him for all of the won- derful work he did with me throughout the years. I found myself staying in Livingston to undergo a series of chelation treatments as I was still toxic in lead, mercury, cadmium, gadolinium and 16 other heavy metals! From what I understand today, cadmi- um is one of the most toxic of metals, which is accumulated in the body in many forms, in par- ticular from tobacco use. (I’ve had a 43-year addiction to nico- tine from first-hand and second- hand smoke.) I went through treatment at Absaroka Natural Medicine with Dr. Seth Stenseth, a natur- opathic physician here in town. (I also sought services from Dr. Karen Stenseth for hormonal issues.) I was on the fast track to recovery. I have had 17 treat- ments and found tremendous health benefits in my mind and body. The most impacting result was the fact that I got both my long-term and short-term memory back, along with many other cognitive abilities. My brain cells could now communicate without interference with the heavy metals and were working much better. To recap briefly about the for- mer “bipolar” diagnosis. Yes, there have been many psychological struggles in my family of origin involving domestic violence and other forms of abuse. The times I had to go in to an inpatient psychiatric center were due to repressed traumatic memories that were surfacing and because my father didn’t want to face the fact that he mistreated me when he was drinking alcohol. He labeled me as the one with the problems; hence, I took on the “sick role” instead of him. In addition, I learned how to be verbally abu- sive based on the poor role model- ing of my abusive father.
