I am delighted to welcome you to one of the highlights on the local and national entertainment calendar, the 65th Wexford Fringe Festival.

Offering an eclectic mix of over 300 events across 17 days, the 2017 Wexford Fringe Festival delivers a programme of events which both reflects and enhances the town’s global reputation as a kaleidoscopic hub of cultural activity.

Once the spectacular fireworks display catapults the Wexford Fringe Festival into life, audiences of all ages will be treated to cabaret, comedy, dance, film, theatre, puppetry, music and the visual arts from Thursday October 19th to Sunday November 5th 2017.

Wexford Chamber is delighted to be involved in a festival, which has not only gone from strength to strength in terms of entertaining the masses, but through its continued growth and innovation, the Wexford Fringe Festival has become a tourist attraction in its own right and continues to make a significant contribution to the local economy.

In what is generally considered to be an off-peak period in other parts of the country, the Wexford Fringe Festival is also warmly welcomed by retailers, as it provides a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between summer and Christmas trade.

On behalf of Wexford Chamber and Wexford Fringe, I hope that you enjoy everything that the festival has to offer and together, let’s make Wexford Fringe 2017 the best one yet!

WEST GATE HERITAGE CENTREThis tower once guarded the western entrance to the Selskar monastic precincts. It was built c.1300 by Sir Stephen Devereux. Like the other town gates, it consisted of a toll-taking area, cells for offenders and accommodation for guards.

SELSKAR ABBEYThis is one of the oldest sites of worship in Wexford. An abbey was built on the site by Alexander Roche who, upon returning from the Crusades, was informed of the decision of his true love to enter a convent believing him dead. The abbey, the tower of which still stands, was the site of synods and parliaments over the centuries. The roofless church is of much later construction.

CORNMARKETThe prehistoric market place building dates back to 1775. As the name suggests this was once the central market place of the town with its lower floor an open selling area. It has been a market area, dance venue, concert hall and Municipal offices. The Cornmarket is now home to Wexford Arts Centre and the new Wexford County Library close by in Mallin Street.

THE BULL RINGThe Bullring got its present name from the medieval sport of Bull-baiting, introduced to the town by The Butchers’ Guild. From 1621 until 1770, bulls were baited twice a year and their hides presented to the Mayor. During the 1798 rebellion, the Bullring became an open-air factory, making and repairing pikes and other weapons for the insurgents. The Bullring has been the venue of many political rallies and protests: Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell, John Edward Redmond and Eamonn de Valera are among the many political figures who have addressed audiences in this historic square at the heart of Wexford. The Pikeman statue, sculpted in bronze by Oliver Sheppard, commemorates Wexford’s brave but failed rebellion of 1798. It was unveiled in an elaborate ceremony attended by 30,000 people in 1905. In 2009, conservation works to the Pikeman statue took place.A re-construction of the Bullring was carried out as a 1798 bicentenary project and was officially opened by President Mary McAleese on 31st May, 1998. A ‘Tree of Liberty”, an Oak, was planted in the centre of the Bullring. Embedded in the

ground behind the Pikeman statue is a ‘time capsule’ taking the form of a metal cylinder containing items reflective of Wexford life in the bicentenary year. The limestone setts which sit on either side of the monument feature inscriptions relating to 1798, while bollards in the shape of cannonballs line the area. Extensive conservation and repair work to the Market Place in the Bull Ring was carried out in 2008.

THE REDMOND MONUMENTThis monument commemorating the Redmond Family dominates Redmond Square at the Northern end of Wexford Town. The Redmond family was prominent in the business, social and political life of Wexford in the 19th century. They represented the town and county in Parliament, and also instigated the reclamation of great tracts of land including the very ground upon which Redmond Square stands. In 2007, following conservation and cleaning works to the monument, floodlighting was put in place to highlight the monument at night.Redmond Square, with its obelisk near the railway station, commemorates the elder John Edward Redmond (1806-1865) who was Liberal MP for the city of Wexford. The inscription reads: “My heart is with the city of Wexford. Nothing can extinguish that love but the cold soil of the grave.”Nearby a memorial commemorates the Wexford men who lost their lives in World War One.

COUNTY HALLThe imposing facade of the former headquarters of Wexford County Council was originally a gaol, built in 1812, with walls twenty feet high enclosing 58 cells and 16 exercising yards. Public executions took place on a green in front of the gaol until 1860. A memorial garden to the men executed during Irelands Civil War (1922-1923) is sited in the gaol’s graveyard.

WEXFORD QUAYSAs with all port towns, the quays are a focal point of Wexford. Over the past thousand years they have extended from their original shoreline close to the present North Main Street. In September 2000, this progression continued with an extension width of 25 metres.A central decked area reminiscent of the old woodenworks of the 1870’s provides a pleasant area to stroll. An inner cobbled area with seating, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the view of the River Slaney. Today Wexford Quay is home to a fleet of commercial mussel harvesters.

HISTORY OF WEXFORDIn a country steeped in myth and legend, Wexford’s history is no exception. Well known Wexford Writer and Historian Nicholas Furlong and Wexford County Council remind us of our rich heritage and hopes to prompt us into reading further about the history of our beautiful town.

CRESCENT QUAYThe Crescent Quay of today is the former ‘Deep Pool’ of Wexford. It was here that deep water ships berthed. The present stone front which dates back to the early 1800’s extended the length of the quays until the railway arrived in 1880, and threw its viaduct across the mouth of the Crescent to carry the main line to the Rosslare-Europort.The bronze statue facing out to sea at Crescent Quay is that of Commodore John Barry, “Father of the American Navy”. Barry was born some miles outside Wexford town. The statue was a gift of the American people in 1956. U.S. Presidents Eisinhower and Kennedy are among the dignitaries who have laid wreaths here. In the days of sail up to one hundred vessels brought cargoes of superb Co. Wexford malting barley across the Mediterranean, through the Black Sea as far as Odessa and Galati on the Danube.Behind John Barry is the Old Ballast Office. It was from this building for many decades, that the Wexford Harbour Commissioners oversaw the smooth running of the busy port which traded with many parts of the world. A reminder of our nautical past is to be found in the quay bollards and the window sills to the side of the building where sailors sharpening their knives made unintentional sculptures in the soft stone.

THE BALLAST BANKThe unusual rock foundation island which can be seen from the quays is the ballast bank. It was a place where ships entering or leaving the port could take on or off-load their ballast of sand or stones which they needed to remain stable at sea while travelling without cargo.

THE MAIN STREETWexford’s Main Street, the principal shopping area, is a unique reminder of Wexford’s heritage. Its narrow, irregular paths developed from market trails between the Gaelic municipality to the north and the Norse to the south. It gives local people and visitors a taste of the friendly intimacy of this ancient town.

ST IBERIUS CHURCH, MAIN STREETSaint Iberius Church of Ireland is situated on the site of the early Christian missionary Iubhars’ church. The name Iberius is used in other forms such as Saint Ibar or St. Ivers. The present building is of a 1760 style and contains memorials to several notable Wexford people.

THE NATIONAL OPERA HOUSEThis venue in High Street is the headquarters of the world renowned international Wexford Festival Opera. The original theatre opened in January 1832. In 2006, it closed its doors to undergo a major reconstruction which took just over 2 years to complete. On Friday 5th, September 2008. The National Opera House was officially opened by An Taoiseach, Brian

Cowen. This was a historic moment for Wexford and for Ireland. This impressive, landmark building (and Ireland’s first custom-built Opera House) was designed and project-managed by the Office of Public Works. This skyline-changing building hosts a multitude of events all year round of theatre, dance, concerts and other events in addition to the Wexford Festival Opera.

TWIN CHURCHESDominating the skyline of Wexford, are the Twin Churches (the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Rowe Street and The Church of the Assumption, Bride Street). These two churches built between 1851 and 1858 just after the Great Famine are a monument to the devotion of Wexford people and the determination of Father James Roche who saw them to completion. An interesting feature at the main door of both churches is the cobbled mosaic showing relevant names and dates.

FRANCISCAN FRIARYThe Franciscans are the longest established religious order in Wexford, having first come c.1240. Since then they have attended to the spiritual needs of the town through good times and bad. For many years, theirs was the only Catholic Church. It was outside the walls of Wexford town. Friars were among the victims of Cromwellian soldiers in 1649. The grounds of the Church were the venue of huge Temperance rallies in the 1840’s. One of the features of the Friary Church is the effigy of the young boy St. Adjutor, Roman martyr. This lifelike figure shows the wounds inflicted by the youth’s father. It is a much visited shrine.

THE KNIGHTS HOSPITALLERS, ST. JOHNS GATE STREETThe remains of the Knights Hospital and Church of that militant Church Order contains the graves of interesting Wexford citizens, including the tomb of John Edward Redmond M.P. the leader of the Irish Nationalist Party in Westminster and his family. Nearby is the birthplace of the great revivalist of the Irish Ireland movement Robert Brennan, later head of Ireland’s Diplomatic Corps in wartime Washington. His memorial is framed by the old town wall in Abbey Street. His daughter was the famed writer, Maeve Brennan of the New Yorker. Redmond Park, Spawell Road, is a delightful park dedicated to the memory of Major William Redmond where a fine memorial was completed on the centenary of his death in 1917 in World War One.

CONCERT: GALA CONCERT

‘The poet of all circles and the idol of his own’- the words are Lord Byron’s, inscribed

on the tall Celtic cross erected above Thomas Moore’s grave one hundred years ago. Byron adored the Irish Melodies: he told Moore ‘I have them by heart… they are my matins and vespers. He was celebrated for singing and accompanying songs such as ‘The Minstrel Boy’, ‘Believe Me’, and particularly, ‘The Last Rose of Summer’ which quickly became the anthem of every great soprano of the day. As a result of their popularity, the Irish Melodies were continually updated; some, such as Frank Lambert’s ‘She s Far from the Land’ became even more famous than the original.

The Gala Concert is one of the highlights of the Wexford Festival Opera and features a collection of favourite party pieces from

members of the Festival company. All performers generously donate their time and talent for the Gala Concert, and all proceeds go toward supporting Wexford Festival Opera. Early booking is advised.

OPERA; MEDEALuigi Cherubini (1760-1842)As the New Grove Dictionary of Opera explains, ‘In its unmitigated horror, this

opera has a few equals. Its savage fury ties it closely to its Greek ancestry.’ It is all the more astonishing, then, to remember that it was written a mere six years after Die Zauberflöte. Cherubini, who composed over 30 operas as well as large quantities of church and chamber music, was himself fully cosmopolitan and stands apart from the other Italian composers of his day.

SHORTWORK; RIGOLETTOGiuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)Dating from the very middle of Verdi’s middle period, and occupying first place

in the famous early 1850’s trilogy that includes Il Trovatore and La Traviata, Rigoletto is one of the best known of all Verdi’s operas. Indeed, it is the first of his operas to have remained popular and firmly in the repertoire without interruption, since its premiere at La Fenice in Venice in 1851 to the present day. There were, nevertheless, impediments to early performances, both from the official censors and self-censorious audiences, appalled by what they saw as ‘immorality’ and ‘obscene triviality’ of the Victor Hugo play on which Verdi and his librettist Francesco Maria Piave based their masterpiece. It is also essentially an intimate drama, something that lends itself to the adaptations also required in a pared-down performance such as that presented here in the ShortWorks series. The Festival ShortWorks are made possible by the generous support of The Lord Magan of Castletown.

Andrew Synnott (1970-)

‘A play that will make you laugh and make you cry…’

Finghin Collins

Risurrezione tells of the young aristocrat, Nekhlyudov, who while serving on a jury

recognises the prostitute Katerina Maslova as the young girl he once seduced, and how he rejects his former life and follows her to Siberia, trying to undo the past wrongs. Tolstoy’s complex critique of Russian society was particularly unsparing in its gaze on the Orthodox Church, so much so that it led to the writer’s formal excommunication. Ironically, given the adaptations that have been made of his work for the lyric stage, Tolstoy hated opera because he thought it superficial. Alfano’s opera concentrates on the drama of personal relationships, and Risurrezione quickly became a hit in operatic capitals from Paris to Chicago.

World premiere of two new short operas based on stories (Counterparts and The Boarding House) from Dubliners by James

Joyce, which are given a fresh new treatment in this operatic double-bill. Just over 100 years after they were first published, composer Andrew Synnott and librettist Arthur Riordan combine perfectly to capture the world of the original stories and bring Joyce’s unique characters vividly to life. This double-bill is scored for piano, string quartet and a cast of six singers. The music is both contemporary and entertaining, affectionately offering a new way to experience Joyce’s celebrated and popular stories of his native Dublin. The Festival ShortWorks are made possible by the generous support of The Lord Magan of Castletown.

Theatre Royal Productions presents Sing Street star Don Wycherley in the touching and entertaining My Real Life by Eoin Colfer directed by Ben Barnes.Wexford man Noel has advanced MS and decides to end it all. While waiting for his overdose to take effect he records an increasingly rambling message full of humour and small-town anecdotes for his best friend. Noel has apologies to make and messages to send. He has love in his heart and he wants to declare it even if it’s already too late. Noel spends what is possibly the last hour of his life re-living the highs and lows of the past forty years and, surprisingly perhaps, it’s not all doom and gloom.

The very popular Lunchtime Recitals provide an insight into the artistic personality of some of the principal singers of the Festival and are a way to ‘meet’ them in an informal setting. In the beautiful and acoustically excellent eighteenth-century church of St Iberius in the centre of Wexford, audiences appreciate the musical versatility of solo singers who perform a wide variety of music from across the repertoire, including operatic arias, lieder, oratorio, concert and popular songs. One of the delights of attending a Lunchtime Recital is that the programme is not advertised beforehand, so everyone shares the same degree of anticipation and expectation. Unsurprisingly, the Lunchtime Recitals sell out very quickly.

One of Ireland’s most successful musicians, Dubliner Finghin Collins was born in 1977

and studied piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with John O’Conor and the Geneva Conservatoire with Dominique Merlet. Winner of the RTÉ Musician of the Future Competition in 1994 and the Classical Category at the National Entertainment Awards in Ireland in 1998, Finghin went on to achieve major international success by taking first prize at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland in 1999. Since then he has developed a flourishing international career that takes him all over Europe, the United States and the Far East.In 2016 Finghin made his debuts in Turkey, China and Australia as well as performing throughout Europe. In March 2017, he performed a recital as part of the National Concert Hall’s International Concert Series to mark its 40th birthday. He will make his debut at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival USA in August 2017, performing with counter-tenor David Daniels.

LECTURE; DR TOM WALSH LECTURE

LECTURE; OPERAS OF THE PAST, MIRRORS OF OUR PRESENT

The 2017 Dr Tom Walsh Lecture will be given by Fiona Shaw, Irish actress and

theatre and opera director, known for her role as Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter films and her role as Marnie Stonebrook in season four of the HBO series True Blood (2011). She has worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, twice winning the Olivier Award for Best Actress; for various roles including Electra in 1990, and for Machinal in 1994. She won the 1997 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance for The Waste Land. Her other stage work includes playing the title role in Medea, both in the West End and on Broadway (2001-02). She was awarded an Honorary CBE in 2001.Born in County Cork, Miss Shaw trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and was part of a ‘new wave’ of actors to emerge from the Academy. Tea and coffee will be served after the Lecture.

Presented by Sylvia L’Écuyer (associate professor of musicology in the Faculty of Music of the University of Montreal; broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, where from 1996 to 2000 she was director of music; producer of the Opera Saturday for Ici Musique). Often inspired by the works of the greatest poets and playwrights, operas expose us to another perspective of our humanity. Gods and nymphs, dukes and queens, warriors and courtesans are inspired by the same passions and defeated by the same foibles as we are. Today the stage directors feel the urge to make the message clear, shedding crowns and gowns, and updating the drama to contemporary circumstances. At which point do these adaptations betray the true nature of the work?

SHORTWORK; LA SCA LA DI SETA Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) While some of Rossini’s operas count

among the best loved in the repertoire, there are still many corners of his output worthy of exploring at a festival devoted to operatic rarities. In the context of this year’s programme, he can be seen both as coming from a generation or two before that of Foroni and from a generation or two after that of Cherubini, both Italians who sought their fortunes abroad. Rossini was not as quick as Cherubini to head to Paris, then the worlds operatic capital, but he eventually did so- indeed, like Cherubini (and Chopin), he was buried at the Pere Lachaise Cemetary, though his remains would later be taken home to his native Pesaro. La Scala di seta belongs firmly to his early Italian years, and indeed is a key work in his development, even if it is only more recently that its jewel-like qualities have come to be fully appreciated. The Festival ShortWorks are made possible by the generous support of The Lord Magan of Castletown.

OPERA; MARGHERITAJacopo Foroni (1824-1858)Following the success of Cristina, regina di Svezia at Wexford in 2013. Margherita is a delightful comedy in which a soldier and

his betrothed are kept apart by confusion, duels, mistaken identity, treachery and jealousy. Roberto wishes to marry Margherita, but she is in love with Ernesto. Ernesto and Margherita decide to marry the day after he discovers his battalion is shipping out. Ernesto’s Colonel is attacked and Ernesto is blamed. All seems lost until the Count clears everything up. Ernesto and Margherita are reunited to marry.

Colm Tóibín speaking about his latest novel, House of Names

House of Names, Colm Tóibín’s ninth novel, is a retelling of The Oresteia through the voices of its principal characters – Clytemnestra and her children, Orestes and Electra – but gives us so much more that isn’t in the original dramatic trilogy. Of this novel, Alex Preston of The Guardian has said: “Tóibín is like a great actor, taking the framework provided by the events of the play and providing psychology, motivation, nuance, humanity.”

MUSICI IRELAND

KEVIN LAWLOR QUARTET - MUSIC OF JOHN COLTRANE

A stunning Chamber concert featuring the Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford’s phantasy for horn and strings as well as Mozart’s horn quintet. Musici Ireland is celebrating their 5th anniversary this year and return to wexford after a highly successful concert series in The National Concert Hall, Dublin.Jocelyn Lightfoot is one of the premier French Horn Players of her generation, working with all the major London orchestras. She is currently appearing as principal horn in the Wexford Festival Opera Orchestra.

John Coltrane is one of the most iconic figures jazz has ever produced and had an

almost instantly recognizable tone and sound on tenor saxophone. He came to major attention as part of the Miles Davis Quintet that would go on to record Kind of Blue before a legendary 6 month residency in Carnegie Hall with Thelonious Monk. He forged a career with a relentless searching for a new approach to improvising, culminating in his own legendary Quartet. His music took on a more spiritual approach with albums such as Love Supreme with his music eventually becoming quite controversial before his death in 1967. Kevin Lawlor Quartet will be performing music from his early career as well as pieces from Blue Train, Giant Steps and other great Trane albums. Kevin Lawlor – drums. Adam Nolan - tenor saxophone. Pat Molitor – piano. Andrew Csibi - double bass.

By Orla Barry, in association with Wexford Festival Opera. With a year’s production of wool generated on her farm and two

GUINNESS SINGING AND SWINGING PUBS COMPETITION 2017The Guinness Singing and Swinging Pubs competition is now in its 65th year. This competition has come a long way since it first started in 1952, and it hasn’t lost an ounce of its unique character in those 65 years. The people who contribute and compete in the Guinness Wexford Singing and Swinging Pubs competition have managed to nurture the event through time. They have also worked hard to ensure the original competitiveness and atmosphere still exists today.

People travel from all over the world to soak up the atmosphere and indulge in the ever expanding talent that Wexford has to offer. Apart from the fact that this is an Over 18s Event, there are no written

rules beyond an appropriate time period. We invite you to visit some, or all, of the pubs and hotels taking part to see if you agree with the adjudicator’s decision. The main sections in the competition are Singing, Swinging, Variety and Traditional Style.

Why not decide for yourself when you attend a show what type of house you are in. Crowd participation is a very important element and whether you are in your local pub or visiting for the Festival, you can be as much a part of it as the singers and the musicians. On behalf of Diageo Ireland can I wish all the competitors the best of luck in the competition. I would also like to thank the people of Wexford and all the very welcome visitors for their support over the last 65 years. Let’s make the 65th year the best ever.Enjoy the Guinness Singing and Swinging Pubs competition 2017.

- Brian Cantwell - Diageo Ireland

ADJUDICATION AND PRIZESThe adjudicator will visit each of the pubs and judge their performances over a period of 30 minutes. Following tradition, a Diageo Ireland representative will post the results in the Bull Ring around 11.45pm on Thursday 2nd November.

Prizes will be presented over the weekend of Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th November where the winning pubs will organise a re-run of their shows on those nights.

For the most up to date times and venues for the Guinness Singing and Swinging Pubs Competition 2017 log on to www.wexfordfringe.ie.

BRAVURA 2017: An exhibition of work in clay, metal and on paper by Anne Butler, Mike Byrne, Sarah Jenkins, Lara Scobie, Christiane Wilhelm and Stephen Yusko.

Exhibition of ‘The Siege of Wexford’ panel from the Ros Tapestry. The town of Wexford was promised to Fitzstephens during negotiations with MacMurrough. But Wexford town resisted as it was an independent Viking city state, only paying token dues to the Kings of Leinster. Following an unsuccessful siege and attempt to take the town by force, Dermot finally had to send his bishop to agree a settlement with the Norse men. The Ros Tapestry is one of the largest tapestries in Europe. Each embroidered panel depicts a different event in the Norman history of Ireland’s Ancient East.
