The story of the Good Samaritan is so familiar that we almost take it for granted. Of course

we want to be the Good Samaritan!

It is easy to see the priest and the Levite as villains, walking by on the other side, but they

followed the customs of class and the precautions of safety on a dangerous road. When

someone has car trouble or asks me for change on the side of the street, I calculate my time

and money, weigh the risks, and decide whether I can spare the time, money and risk to

    help.

The Good Samaritan is willing to care even at a cost to himself. He takes the risk of being

victimized, gives his time and his money, and perhaps most importantly defies social and

class customs to do so. Mercy does not offer love that is convenient, expected or easy; it

offers loving care when it is unconventional, over the top or even costly.

God has planted this law of mercy inside us: “It is in your mouth and in your heart for you to

without counting the cost. May we be more faithful to God’s laws than the external rules and

    customs which become our excuses.

  • A message from the Archdiocese of Sydney

Abuse is a crime. The appropriate people to deal with a crime are the police. If you – or anyone you know – have been abused, please contact the police. Alternatively, you can contact the Safeguarding and Ministerial Integrity Office at (02) 9390 5810 or [email protected].

You may also want to speak to your Parish Priest, who will be able to provide support and guidance. The Archdiocese has a legal obligation to report crimes to the police,

Social Justice Group Refugee Week Invitation This Saturday - 13th July - After 5pm vigil mass the Social Justice Group is hosting a light supper and art exhibition to support the Asylum Seekers Centre.

Hassan Sabbagh is an Australian Iraqi refugee who fled Saddam’s brutal regime in 1999 and made his way to Australia. His paintings reflect his life in may ways - simple yet intricate, each tells a story from a past that is both epic and outrageous. A self taught painter, Hassan has captured the beauty and perspective of different forms of ar-chitecture. Subjects range from the markets of old Iraq to a series of paintings depicting Sydney in the 1930s. His attention to details astounds. A small exhibition of Hassan’s art will be held upstairs from the parish office. A light supper of delicious Australian and Middle Eastern delights will be provided. Money raised will go to the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown, who currently provide more than 200 meals a month to refugees, a well as medical care, English lessons, legal oversight and school packs to those with few financial resources. Entry is by gold coin donation and Hassan is donating a percentage of profit from all paintings
