The Medical Centres of the University HospitalThe University Hospital as an EmployerCompany Profile
In addition to their responsibilities for patient care, staff at the University Hospital are active in research and teaching. In many areas of basic and clinical research the doctors and scientists of the University Hospital are cutting-edge specialists nationally and internationally.
The hospital also works closely with Regensburg University’s Faculty of Medicine. In science, research and teaching, the hospital and its individ-ual clinical and theoretical departments work hand in hand.
At present around 2000 students are matricu-lated for medicine and dentistry. They frequently attain the highest grades in the state medical ex-
ams. This attests the success of the Faculty of Medicine in one of its key aims: to provide high-quality teaching and train competent medical specialists for the health-care sector.
Regensburg University Hospital (Universitäts-klinikum Regensburg: UKR) is the only facility in North East Bavaria to be classified in the top cate-gory as defined by German hospital planning laws, providing the highest level of care, and as such it serves a population of two million inhabitants in
the region. Every year around 35,000 in-patients and 136,000 out-patients are treated. With a case-mix-index of 1.95, Regens-burg University Hospital is providing care for patients with particularly serious ill-nesses and injuries.
Some 833 beds and 52 day-clinic treatment units are available for patient care, and a staff of more than 4400, including around 740 doc-tors and over 1700 nurses, are on hand. The University Hospital is devided into 28 in- and out- patient departments. They cover all the major spe-cialist fields of medicine and dentistry.
Since the admission of the first in-patients in 1992, Regensburg Uni-versity Hospital has been continually expanded. A strategic plan ensures reg-ular maintenance, mod-ernization, and new build-ing works, to provide the best possible environment for patient care, research and teaching.

Our aim is patient satisfaction. We offer the best medical treatment and care, in a personal atmo-sphere.
As a medical centre of excellence, Regens-burg University Hospital (Universitätsklinikum Regensburg: UKR) offers a wide spectrum of services for medical provision locally and na-tionally. The interaction of health care, rese-arch and teaching guarantees the best possible treatment according to the latest scientific knowledge. From A for appendicitis to Z for zygomatic pain, specialists for every medical need and from every medical discipline are represented. All de-partments host a wide range of sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic services for all ail-ments, whether mild or acute. But we also lay equal importance on addressing the individual views and wishes of patients and their families. We are com-mitted to an improvement of the quality of life, the health and the overall satisfaction of the patients in our care. This requires a culture of professiona-lism, responsibility and sensitivity from all our doc-tors and nurses.
The University Hospital is a leading centre for stu-dent instruction. This is confirmed by regular top rankings in the national statistics for medical ex-ams.
The Faculty of Medicine owes its high standards to the excellent work and great commitment of the lecturers. They are supported by well-developed structures. For example, the Faculty runs a special-ist unit for medical didactics, financed by grants from the Bavarian Ministry of Science. The facul-ty also runs the Student Training Centre (StATUR), in which students of medicine and dentistry can hone and deepen their practical skills. In co-oper-ation with other faculties in the university, the Fac-ulty of Medicine offers the degree courses “Molec-ular Medicine”, “Computational Science” and “Ex-perimental and Clinical Neurosciences”. Together with the University Hospital, it plays a key role in two degree courses at neighbouring technical uni-versities: “Medical Information Technology” at the OTH (Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule) Re-gensburg and “Medical Engineering” at the OTH Amberg-Weiden. These new courses of study meet the changing needs of a modern health-care sys-tem, satisfying the demand for new career models in medicine.
The first-rate international quality of research at the Regensburg University Hospital is attested by a wide range of research projects.
The research foci of Regensburg University’s Fac-ulty of Medicine lie in the fields of immunothera-py, tumour research and transplantation medi-cine. These are financed by numerous grants and funding programmes. The Faculty receives funding from the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft: DFG) for example for research clusters, clinical research groups and participation in special research areas. Other proj-ects are financed by state and EU funding bodies. A modern infrastructure facilitates cooperative in-terdisciplinary research projects. With the opening of the Regensburg Centre for Interventional Immu-nology (RCI) and the establishment of a Fraunhofer project group a basis was laid for research beyond the university. Fostering the new generation of sci-entists is a principal aim.
