1905

Georg Knorr founds Knorr-Bremse GmbH

in Berlin.

1918 – 1926

Knorr-Bremse sets new technological

standards for freight trains with its pneu-

matic brakes. Knorr-Bremse becomes

Europe’s biggest manufacturer of brake

systems for rail vehicles.

1922

Development of pneumatic brake system

for commercial vehicles begins.

1931 – 1939

The Hildebrand-Knorr brake system (HIK

brake) sweeps the market and becomes

the standard system in 17 different coun-

tries. By 1939, 90% of all German trucks

from 7 t – 16 t are equipped with Knorr-

Bremse brakes.

1945

The Knorr-Bremse plant in Berlin is con-

fiscated and dismantled at the end of the

2nd World War.

1945 – 1953

ing equipment resumes in the western

part of Germany. Company headquarters

move to Munich.

1960 – 1980

Knorr-Bremse plays a leading role in

the development of braking technology

for rail and commercial vehicles. Knorr-

Bremse establishes the new UIC standard

with its KE control valve.

1985

Heinz Hermann Thiele acquires the ma-

jority of the shares previously held by

Dr. Jens von Bandemer and gradually

becomes sole owner of Knorr-Bremse.

Together with the company‘s inter-

national orientation, the focus on the

two divisions, Rail Vehicle Systems and

Commercial Vehicle Systems, that Thiele

initiated make Knorr-Bremse the world‘s

leading manufacturer of braking systems

in both sectors.

1996

Series production of pneumatic disc

brakes for commercial vehicles begins.

1999

The commercial vehicle brakes division

of Robert Bosch GmbH is integrated into

Knorr-Bremse, complementing the com-

pany‘s activities in the field of electronic

brake control.

2002

Knorr-Bremse Rail Vehicle Systems is the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems for mass transit and long-distance rail networks. Knorr-Bremse braking systems are used in high-speed trains as well as locomotives, multiple units, subways, street cars and freight vehicles. At the end of 2010, the Rail Vehicle Systems division employed over 9,500 people and achieved annual sales of 2.02 billion euros.

Rail VehicleSystems

Safety, customer benefits, innovationSystems from Knorr-Bremse are used

around the globe and provide more

safety and comfort in rail traffic. Knorr-

Bremse offers individual solutions for

every type of vehicle and every area of

application worldwide. Braking systems

for the OEM market have undergone

extensive development with a series of

innovations for increased customer ben-

efits and the market position was further

developed.

New products in 2010 include the

further developed metro brake control

system EP2002, which considerably

simplifies the spatial integration of the

brake controls in the vehicle, and the

soundproofed oil-free piston compres-

sor. Integrating the oil-free piston com-

pressor into a sound capsule is Knorr-

Bremse’s intelligent solution to satisfy

ever more stringent sound emission

requirements. Moreover, the capsule

provides increased protection against

dirt and water and in addition protects

against rock and ice fall.

Along with braking systems, innovative

train entrance systems from IFE, plat-

form screen doors from Westinghouse

Platform Screen Doors, air condition-

ing systems from the subsidiary Merak,

and driving simulators from Sydac are

other specialties in the range of services

from the Knorr-Bremse Group. The Rail

Vehicles product portfolio also includes

sanding units, modern driver assistance

systems, and auxiliary equipment such

as derailment detectors.

Knorr-Bremse Commercial Vehicle Systems offers its customers braking systems for trucks, buses, trailers, and agricultural machinery. In the area of chassis systems, Knorr-Bremse is a leader in both electronic controls and driver assistance systems, as well as in air treatment, and makes a significant contribution to safety on the road. Additional pro-duct areas are power train systems, and torsional vibration dampers for diesel engines. With over 6,500 employees, the division achieved sales of 1.70 billion euros in 2010.

Safety and efficiency through innovation

As a manufacturer of safety-related bra-

king systems, Knorr-Bremse is called on to

make a crucial contribution to traffic safety.

Electronic systems play an ever larger role

here. Knorr-Bremse is strongly committed

to the development of driver assistance

systems and is the first manufacturer to

offer an electronic stability program (ESP)

for tractor vehicles along with the ESP for

articulated trains and the roll stability pro-

gram (RSP) for trailers.

The next level of development is so-called

forward-looking systems, which incorpo-

rate environmental data based on radar,

video, or ultrasound in their processes,

thus effectively supporting the driver. In

the Autonomous Emergency Brake System

(AEBS), for example, a radar sensor conti-

nually measures the distance to the vehi-

cle in front. If the distance decreases too

quickly, the system can intervene in the

brake controls and help to avoid accidents.

As part of the current market demand

regarding the use of modern hybrid

technologies in commercial vehicles,

Knorr-Bremse began the serial production

of screw compressors for hybrid buses

in the spring of 2010. Furthermore, the

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

has been applied to operation in Europe.

TPMS monitors tire pressure, continually

The high level of commitment and motivation of its employees also ensured that Knorr-Bremse could continue to strengthen its position in the global market in 2010. After the necessary personnel adjustment measures in 2009, especially in the Commercial Vehicles division – caused by the impact of the global economic crisis – the number of employees Group-wide again increased in 2010.

At the end of 2010, the Knorr-Bremse

Group recorded a growth of 1,845 emplo-

yees from the previous year, to a total of

16,277 employees. Thus, there were 12.8%

more employees in the year under report

than in 2009. With 3,235 employees (pre-

vious year: 3,071), just under one fifth of

employees were in Germany.

Knorr-Bremse stands for excellence, globally recognized products, processes, and services. The personnel policy supports this through systematic and targeted personnel development measures. The company offers its employees extensive and targeted development opportunities both in the professional and personal area, thus resul-ting in a high number of highly qualified and motivated employees.

ManagementEvolution Program (MEP)Successfully established twelve years ago,

Knorr-Bremse’s Management Evolution

Program (MEP) gives new hires the op-

portunity to participate in three important

projects as trainees, gaining valuable

insights into operations in different parts

of the Group. The combination of direct

project responsibility and special training

courses helps to develop the trainees’ hard

and soft skills in a professional context. In

the year under review, strong growth in

the Asia region led to the inclusion of two

Chinese and one Indian participant in the

program for the first time. Knorr-Bremse

has given priority to the continued inter-

nationalization of the MEP.

TalentManagementA comprehensive talent management

program develops qualified successors

for key management positions and offers

high potentials attractive career opportu-

nities within the Group. The International

Development Center and International

Development Programs modules for juni-

ked during 2010. The Development Cen-

ter, which is held several times each year,

allows Knorr-Bremse to identify individual

strengths and areas for improvement and

to define targeted and systematic profes-
