introductionThis second edition of Nebraska At-a-Glance ranks Nebraska in a variety of metrics – from economics to education to taxes. It is designed to provide policymakers and the public with a snapshot of Nebraska compared to other states.

We hope this report can be used as a quick reference or starting point as you delve deeper into policy areas important to you, your districts, and the State of Nebraska. To assure uniformity across states, the data used in this report comes from the U.S. Bureau of the Census and other national databanks.

Nebaska At-a-Glance is issued biennially. It is our goal to make this report as useful as possible. To that end, policymakers, staffers, and the public are encouraged to provide feedback on how this report can be improved in the future.

DATA & SOURCESThe tables, graphs, and maps in this report use the most current data available for all 50 states, and in some cases, the District of Columbia. Often, per capita or percentage figures are used to account for population differences between states. Source information is located at the bottom of each page, including a link to the raw data. When a ranking was determined using multiple data sets, both sources are listed.

States are always ranked from highest to lowest value, without regard to subject matter. Thus, a higher ranking is not always preferable to a lower ranking. Two states with the same value are generally given the same ranking. However, values are displayed only to a certain decimal place, so states may appear to have the same value, but different rankings because their real values differ. For each table, the 50-state average was calculated using a weighted average formula. Unless otherwise noted, rates are determined using the population of adults 18 years old and older.

This year, the rankings feature an arrow indicating whether Nebraska’s rank increased or decreased from the 2013 edition of Nebraska At-a-Glance. Most rankings also include a bar graph comparing Nebraska to the national average and a line graph showing Nebraska over time. Some rankings include a map illustrating how states rank in comparison to each other. Bulleted text includes supplemental information about the subject, including definitions, additional rankings, and more detailed data.
