Blueprint

• Several composite scores are formed from different combinations of the ASVAB test scores.• Three composite or “Career Exploration

Scores” which help students with career exploration.

Page 4: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

Blueprint

• These test scores are reported to the student and their counselors on an ASVAB summary sheet.

• They compare the students to others whom are in the same grade.

Page 5: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

Blueprint

• The report shows grade specific, gender specific, and combined standard scores and score bands for all eight test and three Career Exploration Scores.

• Students also get a percentile based interpretation of those scores. In which they get an explanation on the score sheet of what it actually means.

Test Analysis

• At the start of the practice test it reminds test takers about strategies to use during the exam.

• Each section of the ASVAB test battery assesses a variety of test questions.• There is a pattern for each of these

questions which begin with general knowledge questions and then progresses into more difficult questions.

Scoring the ASVAB

• Is a Norm Reference Scored Test.• It test: General Science (GS), Arithmetic

Reasoning (AR), Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Auto & Shop (AS), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Mechanical Comprehension (MC), Electronics Information (EI), Assembling Objects (AS).

• Armed Forces Qualification Test score or “AFQT score.”

Page 10: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

AFQT score

• AFQT score is a "percentile," not a "percent correct."

• AFQT score of 50, that does not mean that 50% of the answers correct. It means he/she scored better than 50 percent of the individuals who took the test.

Scoring the ASVAB

In 1980, a study, known as the "Profile of American Youth," was conducted by the Department of Defense, giving the ASVAB to a total of 11,914 individuals, ranging in age from 16 to 23, from July to October 1980.

Page 12: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

Scoring the ASVAB

• The ASVAB was “re-normed” using the 1997 Profile of American Youth, a national probability sample of 18 to 23 year olds who took the ASVAB in 1997.

• The change (new scoring) went into effect July 1, 2004.

Page 13: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

ASVAB Raw Score

• AFQT score is determined by four areas WK, PC, AR, and MK

• 1st step is to determine Verbal Expression by adding WK+PC=VE

• 2nd step 2VE+AR+MK=RAW SCORE

• Raw score is converted into the percentile score.

Page 14: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

Requirements

• Army requires a AFQT score of at least 31.

• Navy and Air Force require a AFQT of at least 35.

• AFQT scores are valid for 2 years.

Composite or Line Scores

Military job qualification is determined based on "Composite Scores," which are made up of individual ASVAB sub-test scores.

Page 16: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

Air Force MAGE Score

• Mechanical Aptitude Score - Determined from General Science (GS), Mechanical Comprehension (MC), and Auto/Shop (AS).

• Administrative Aptitude Score - Numerical Operations (NO), Coding Speed (CS), and Verbal Expression (VE). (Note: With the elimination of NO and CS from the ASVAB, a "dummy score" is now inserted there, so the Administrative Score is actually determined directly from the VE Score).

• General Aptitude Score - Determined from Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and and Verbal Expression (VE).

• Electronics Aptitude Score - Determined from General Science (GS), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), and Electronics Information (EI).

Page 17: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

Army Composite Scores

• Clerical (CL) - Determined from Verbal Expression (VE), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), and Mathematics Knowledge (MK).

• Combat (CO) - Determined from Verbal Expression (VE), Coding Speed (CS), Auto & Shop (AS) and Mechanical Comprehension (MC). Note: Because CS has been removed from the ASVAB, a "dummy score" is inserted for this area.

• Electronics (EL) - Determined from General Science (GS), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK) and Electronic Information (EI).

• Field Artillery (FA) - Determined from Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Coding Speed (CS), Mathematics Knowledge (MK) and Mechanical Comprehension (MC). Note: Because CS has been removed from the ASVAB, a "dummy score" is inserted for this area.

• General Maintenance (GM) - Determined from General Science (GS), Auto & Shop (AS), Mathematics Knowledge (MK) and Electronics Information (EI).

• General Technical (GT) - Determined from Verbal Expression (VE) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR).

• Mechanical Maintenance (MM) - Determined from Numerical Operations (NO), Auto & Shop (AS), Mechanical Comprehension (MC) and Electronic Information (EI). Note: Because NO has been removed from the ASVAB, a "dummy score" is inserted for this area.

• Operators and Food (OF) - Determined from Verbal Expression (VE), Numerical Operations (NO), Auto & Shop (AS) and Mechanical Comprehension (MC). Note: Because NO has been removed from the ASVAB, a "dummy score" is inserted for this area.

• Surveillance and Communications (SC) - Determined from Verbal Expression (VE), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Auto & Shop (AS) and Mechanical Comprehension (MC).

• Skilled Technical (ST) - Determined from General Science (GS), Verbal Expression (VE), Mechanical Comprehension (MC) and Mathematics Knowledge (MK).

Marine Corps Composite Score

• Clerical (CL)- No Marine Corps enlisted job uses this composite anymore. In 2002, all enlisted MOS's which had a requirement for a CL composite score were converted to GT scores.

• Electronics Repair, Missile Repair, Electronics & Communications (EL) - Determined from General Science (GS), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematics Knowledge (MK) and Electronic Information (EI).

• General Maintenance, Construction, Utility and Chemical Maintenance (MM) - Determined from General Science (GS), Auto & Shop (AS), Mathematics Knowledge (MK) and Electronics Information (EI).

• General Technical, Special and Officer Programs (GT) – Determined from Verbal Expression (VE) and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR).

Navy & Coast Guard

• The Navy and the Coast Guard use direct ASVAB line scores for job qualification determination.

Page 20: ASVAB . Blueprint What does this test actually test over? The Eight Areas of the ASVAB General Science Arithmetic

Army Job Qualifications

• 11B – Infantryman: minimum line score of 90 in CO.

• CO = (VE)+(CS)+(AS)+(MC). Note: Because CS has been removed from the ASVAB, a "dummy score" is inserted for this area.

• 96B – Intelligence Analyst: minimum line score of 105 in ST.

• ST = (GS)+(VE)+(MC)+(MK).
