https://careers.astrazeneca.com/data-sciences-and-ai-graduate-programme

At AstraZeneca, we are deploying Data Science and AI across the

drug discovery phases to discover new connections between data,

provide novel insights, accelerate scientific understanding, and

increase productivity. As a Data Scientist and AI Graduate you will

help our scientists make their data ‘AI-ready’, and integrate the latest

AI advances into all our drug development programmes.

Your two-year programme begins with an

introduction to drug discovery, and how we

harness the potential of Data Science,

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

You’ll then select two eight-month

placements where you’ll apply your

developing skills and experience to help us

overcome challenges in some of our active

research projects.

Throughout the programme you’ll work

alongside our experts, and take advantage of

our close collaborations with leading

Post Programme

What motivates me most about the Data

Science & AI programme is the notion of

developing and applying AI in scientifically

interesting and challenging setting. Since

joining in December 2018, I have developed an

MRI segmentation tool that increases

efficiency of reporting data to project teams.

Currently, I am using clinical data to build a

system to recommend the right diagnostic test

to the right patient. It is a genuine pleasure to

work on projects that can have a direct impact

on both the business and lives of patients.

The working environment is very stimulating.

Every day, I feel inspired to work a bit harder,

(code faster), and most importantly, I’m

encouraged to think outside the box to solve

problems. Innovation is not just an empty word

at AstraZeneca!

The programme also offers many opportunities

to develop valuable interpersonal and business

skills. Insights gained from development

modules, workshops and conversations with

mentors and colleagues have changed many of

my previous misconceptions about the

pharmaceutical industry and made me see my

goals and career in a different light.

My experience so far has been amazing and I

am excited to learn much more.

Technology Graduate Leadership Programme

At AstraZeneca IT, we are at the forefront of discovering and driving

digital health and workplace automation to ensure our teams can

continue to develop more and more life-changing medicines.

We are leading the development of life-saving science and

innovative techniques and medicines, and IT plays a huge part in

this innovation.

Our three-year programme comprises three

rotations, each lasting eight months,

followed by a year-long placement in a role

that aligns to your passion, interest and

skillset, and our business objectives, whilst

ensuring we offer you continued

development and challenges.

Throughout the programme you will be fully

supported by our dedicated teams. You will

have a line manager, a mentor and a buddy, to

help you get the most out of the programme,

developing life-changing skills and gaining

valuable experiences.

We’re looking for great people who share our

passion for technology led science. You should

be driven, determined and hard-working,

resilient, flexible, adaptable and creative. You

must have a passion for data science and the

impact IT can have.

We want future focussed thinkers who will

challenge the status quo, and want to make a

meaningful difference to patients’ lives.

It’s inspiring to be able to identify and apply

cutting edge technologies which help

accelerate our efforts to push the boundaries of

science to develop life changing medicines

The variety of the programme has been

amazing. I’ve developed a competitive

Intelligence Portal that scanned across

therapy areas and clinical trials to enable us to

identify opportunities. I’ve used Machine

Learning to solve complex business problems

such as dissolving language barriers and

understanding the perceived emotion of

patients by analysing their facial expressions.

It was incredibly rewarding to work on a

project that has a direct impact on our

patients. In my final rotation I built a supply

chain forecasting system which predicts drug

demand and ensures sufficient stock is

available to fulfil orders.

On completing the programme I was

promoted into an Innovation Technologist

position, and more recently a Senior

Innovation Technologist role. My work involves

identifying and analysing emerging technology

trends that can be applied to develop

solutions for the challenges facing

AstraZeneca. I leverage technologies and

concepts from Machine Learning, DevOps,

DataOps, Big Data, Block Chain, Augmented

Reality, Virtual Reality Chatbots and IOT to

rapidly collect requirements, then build and

deliver proof of concepts that demonstrate the

impact of these solutions.

AstraZeneca’s Operations Global Graduate

Associates Programme not only helped me

learn the business, it has inspired me to

find my passion.

As college graduation grew near and my job

hunt began, I was overwhelmed with how

vast the supply chain opportunities were and

unsure of what path my career would take.

The only thing I knew for certain was that I

wanted to find a home within a company

that made a meaningful difference in the

lives of those it touched.

Joining AstraZeneca’s Operations Global

Graduate Associates Programme has been

one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I was drawn in by AstraZeneca’s invigorating

culture and the programme’s structure,

which created a comfortable and inspiring

learning environment to begin my career.

Each placement had a well-defined balance

of business acumen and leadership soft-

skills to develop. Through each transition, I

received support and coaching from great

leaders who mirror the companies’ values

and focus on talent development.

Completing an international assignment in

Sweden and working for a transnational

business has enabled me to develop a

strong sense of cultural awareness.

The diverse experiences, cultures and

mentorships of the programme has enabled

me to realize the path I want my career to

follow. Coming to work at AstraZeneca every

day makes me proud to make a meaningful

difference in patients’ lives, and I am grateful

that the programme has helped shape me

into a strong leader.

The practical and leadership experiences I

gained have given me the core skills I need to

lead cross-functional projects which have a

direct impact upon patient lives.

I was unsure whether to pursue a PhD or

career in industry on completing my MChem

with Medicinal Chemistry. It was the breadth of

opportunities available on the Pharmaceutical

Technology & Development (PT&D) Graduate

Programme that convinced me it was the right

next step. The programme exposed me to the

variety of opportunities available to a chemist

outside of the lab and gave me the insight I

needed to identify where I wanted to

specialise.

Through the programme I learned about a

range of topics but what most inspired me was

digital health, artificial intelligence and the

enormous value digital solutions could bring to

patients when used alongside traditional

therapeutics.

Since completing the Pharmaceutical

Technology & Development (PT&D) Graduate

Programme I’ve progressed into my current

position as an Implementation Manager – R&D

Digital. This draws on all of my experiences at

AstraZeneca and University. The global

networks I established through the programme

and the development opportunities it offered

have been invaluable to supporting the

development of my career.

Degree/Qualifications:

Master’s in Biomedicine, Uppsala University

Year of Entry:

2017

By experiencing AstraZeneca’s scientific

excellence in exciting areas of innovative

science I’ve developed invaluable skills

and found my passion.

I was born in Germany, and acquired my

Bachelor’s of Science in Molecular Medicine from

the University of Tübingen. I then moved to

Sweden to obtain my Master’s in Biomedicine

from Uppsala University. I wanted to continue to

develop my research skills in an environment

where I could make a difference, so I was drawn

to AstraZeneca’s R&D Graduate Programme.

The variety of experiences I have had as an R&D

Graduate has been incredible. I met and

collaborated with many colleagues, a lot of them

known experts in their field, and researchers at

the world famous Eli and Edythe L. Broad Institute

of MIT and Harvard. I’ve worked together with

AstraZeneca colleagues to set up and implement

the first protocols for a robotic instrument which

was part of the first fully automated sequencing

project on the Gothenburg site. This work will

accelerate and enhance the ability of the Next

Generation Sequencing (NGS) Team to process

an increased amount of samples. I received

specialist training and I’m now a ’superuser’ for

the instrument, enabling me to train other

AstraZeneca researchers and develop new

applications.

I’ve also been the Secretary and then Treasurer of

AZinspire, the internal early career network,

creating networking opportunities for our members

on site, working with schools to help promote

science, and organising a family day for children

of staff where we helped introduce them to some

exciting cool science.

It’s been an amazing start to my career!
