25.05.16 Dear Colleague, Here is the weekly News Bulletin from your Estates & Capital Development Team Projects/Announcements – CAMPUS July Major Maintenance and Building Closures We need to close the Main Building including both Wings to facilitate the maintenance of the Electrical and Mechanical infrastructure. The building will be closed at 10pm on Friday 1st July and will reopen again at 6am on Monday 4th July 2016. The majority of the works will be within the basement service areas of the Main Building, however there will be a rolling loss of power throughout the Main Building and Wings during the weekend. During this period there will not be power for lighting, lifts, safety alarms etc. hence our decision to close the building in the interest of safety. This will not affect the university main server rooms (however some wiring closets will be affected). The Student Union and EBRI building will also be closed on Saturday 2 nd July. On the days where it is indicated that the building will be closed, access will only be provided to those who have obtained prior authorisation. If you require special access (e.g. to attend to experiments, etc.) you will need to obtain permission in advance from both your Head of School/Department and the Deputy Director of Estates - Engineering and Sustainability, Estates & Capital Developments. If you have permission to access the Main Building and the Wings, the lifts must not be used. The maintenance works have been coordinated with the Schools’ Technical Managers to minimize disruption to experiments/laboratory equipment. Should you require further information please contact:- 1

Dear Colleague,

Projects/Announcements – CAMPUS

July Major Maintenance and Building Closures

We need to close the Main Building including both Wings to facilitate the maintenance of the Electrical and Mechanical infrastructure.

The Student Union and EBRI building will also be closed on Saturday 2nd July.

Should you require further information please contact:-

Restriction on Bicycles Being Brought into Campus Buildings

A new gated cycle compound is being installed next to the South Wing (to the right of the ‘Out of Hours’ exit), which will have capacity for 14 bicycles. This should be operational by mid-June. This will have a digital lock, and the code will be made available to AstBUG members only. Further improvements are being made to the showers in the lower ground of the Main Building, as well as a bicycle pump being fitted by the new and protected shelter. There is already a secure cycle compound next to the EBRI building for anyone to use (capacity of 16) – all you need to do is sign up to be an AstBUG member by getting in touch with the Environment Team or Tim Hooton. Please get in touch if you wish to become an AstBUG member and/or you would like the access code for either of these cycle compounds. Any AstBUG member can also purchase a D Lock from Security at a discounted rate of £10. Works around the South Wing area To install the new cycle compound, we will be repositioning the existing motorcycle shelter to Potter Street. As of 23rd May, the motorbike shelter (Picture 1) next to the out of hours exit needs to be kept free of any motorbikes and cycles. Motorbikes can be parked in the covered shelter (picture 2) or in an alternative location until the shelter reopens in Potter Street (estimated date 31st May) – please see motorbike parking on the map below for options. We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused during these works – please e-mail [email protected] if you have any queries about this.During 31st May and 7th-8th June the stairs from Aston Street down to the shelters will be closed off due to works.

Asbestos surveys: progress update

ECD maintain records of all of Asbestos Containing Materials that are located throughout the site; in addition, we inspect these on an annual basis in order to update our risk register. The works are being carried out by qualified surveyors from Bradley Environmental. They are only required to do a visual inspection and as such there is no danger to any occupants of the buildings or rooms. The surveyors are wearing Bradley Environmental corporate workwear incorporating their company logo and have an AU authorisation to work pass on display. The surveyors have been advised of an appropriate protocol to be applied when entering occupied/unoccupied areas including offices.

This year inspections have started on Monday 11th April 16, however, this work has taken longer than expected. This is mainly due to the fact that the company are now using tablets to record the information directly to the server, as opposed to transferring hand written information. As this is the first time the new system has been used here, there was an increased file transfer time. Subsequent inspections will be quicker as only small changes in detail will need to be transferred.
