AsThoughtarchitecture from concept to built form

Our main goal is to describe the design process, the architectural solutions and the detailing choices of a built work in a chronological order. The dream – that is also the ambition – is to tune at the best the structure of this on-line manual and to spread around its template in order to amplify the power of collecting and publishing in a such huge way that in a few years we could arrive at the largest open source and most browsed utility for architectural students not only in Europe.

History of Commission: Our clients were living in a two-family townhouse we designed some ten years ago, when they

asked us to design their new home. This was of course flattering, but also made us aware of the

importance of pointing out that their new house should surprise them, and probably be quite dif

ferent from the one they were living in. The site they had purchased was subdivided from a large

osv....

Main architectural ideas: A building always has a set of tasks it tries to tackle, thus a set of ideas are developed to

transform these tasks into architectural form and space. The pressure from the surrounding

houses and the problem of accessing the house were the most important osv.....

both in their early forties, as the first to succeed Sverre Fehn, were awarded the Grosch Medal1, this

choice confirmed a change of generation in Norwegian architecture. Due to the timeless architechtural

quality of their work, and because their best work is regarded internationally as an extension of “The

Nordic Tradition”, Jensen and Skodvin make an interesting topic when discussing representatives of

this generational change. Yet, in this article I am rather looking for ”differences”: What characterizes the

changing role of the architect in the Nordic welfare states, what position does this new generation take

in relation to architectural tradition, what is their modus operandi, and how are we to discuss the quality

of the work?

Jensen & Skodvin Architects (JSA) are embraced by those in custody of good taste in architecture. At

the same time, much of their work resonates well with the general public, and is “popular” in the true and

best sense of the word. They are, as such, “A Model Practice”. Their projects diverge from the general

trend of young Norwegian architecture, but in a distinctive manner they provide answers to problems

facing an entire generation.
