It’s getting cold outside, but our third graders are turning up the heat this autumn at Lake Forest East Elementary. Stu-

dents have learned how to analyze liter-ary text and have been able to deter-mine how text features and text struc-tures are utilized in informational text. Students have also been developing their ability to write a complete para-graph, including a topic sentence, at least three supporting details with ex-planations, and a conclusion. They’ve done this in the context of writing per-sonal narratives. Our mathematicians established a solid

foundation by reviewing number sense at the beginning of the year and quickly began learning how to multiply and divide. This is a major focus of third grade math. Make sure to pick up a pack of multiplication fact cards to help build fact fluency. With the holidays coming up, it would be fantastic to get your child in the kitchen to bake. Why? Practicing using measuring cups and measuring spoons will help prepare them for our upcom-ing fractions unit. Third grade super citizens have been learning what it takes to be a good citizen via our civics unit

while continuing to study geography on a daily basis. Our little scientists have also been studying human body concepts with hands-on science activi-ties. This unit will culminate with a field trip to the Franklin Institute in November. Contact your child’s teach-er if you’re interested in being a chaper-one. We look forward to seeing you for our first round of parent conferences coming up on November 21st. Stay warm and see you soon!

excited every day to see whether our mealworms are in the pupa stage and if our painted lady butterflies have ar-rived. We would like to thank parents for sending in box tops and different sup-plies. They are greatly appreciated. Please don’t forget to sign your stu-dent’s planner nightly and initial. We are looking forward to another great month with your children.

It’s so hard to believe that we are in the middle of October already. Second graders have been working so hard the past 7 weeks. They are adjusting well to the routines. In Reading we are in the middle of Non-Fiction Text Features. In Writing we are continuing our Narrative Writ-ing Pieces. In Math we are working on different strategies for solving addition and sub-traction problems. In Science we are in the middle of our Insect Unit. We are

Computer Lab So far, across all grade levels, we have been reviewing the major com-ponents of our computer systems. From hardware to software, it is always important to have a good understanding of the technology tools that the students will be using. Students have also been practicing their basic keyboarding and mouse skills. For the month of October, the students have been engaging in software programs that make use of those keyboard and mouse skills. As

Library News In the Library, kindergarten students have begun checking out library books. Kindergar-ten and 1st graders are exploring Halloween books. 2nd and 3rd graders have just finished learning about fiction books in the library and are beginning the Nonfiction unit. Reminder to parents: Library books should be kept in the child’s backpack while at home. After closing a book, the book should be placed back in the backpack so that books make it back to school every day and so that they stay safe while at home. “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents”—Emilie Buschwald

they continue using the key-board they will begin to under-stand proper finger placement on the Home Row Keys. Stu-dents will also be practicing navi-gation of Microsoft Word for text processing and Tux Paint for digital design.

Kindergarten has had a wonderful start to the new school year. After wiping away a few tears, the children are now well adjusted and having fun as we learn! We have also been very fortu-nate in having the addition of Mrs. Michelle Gilbert to our Kindergarten Team. October finds us continuing our begin-ning journey into reading and writing. We also had a wonderful time on our first field trips to Wicked R Ranch and the firehouse. We will soon be enjoy-ing our first PBS Celebration, along with our Kindergarten Harvest Festival Activity Rotation. November will be just as exciting as we prepare for our Thanksgiving Lunch

Feast. We will also participate in our Fire Safety Day, where we can see and explore many fire and safety things. Our academics include learning to count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s, reading our sight words, learning about Con-cepts of Print by identifying how we read and the parts of a book. We also have delved into the study of trees, rules and community helpers. Our writing is blossoming as we learn to write a sentence using our inventive spelling and adding proper capital let-ters and punctuation. Wow! We sure are busy! In December, the excitement will con-tinue. In language arts we will be delv-ing into books by looking at the Essen-

tial Story Parts of every story, beginning with studying the characters and set-tings and then discussing how to retell a story. We will also be learning many new Sight Words, how to sound out words, and then use these in our writ-ings. In math we are learning to under-stand our numbers from 11 to 20. Science and Social Studies will include our learning about many different Win-ter Holidays. During this study we will be spending some very fun and exciting times as we create crafts, learn songs, and listen to stories. Additionally, we are preparing for our beautiful Holiday Concert and can’t wait to show off our wonderful singing voices. Kindergarten is the place for Holiday Fun!!

We are now well into the cold and flu season. Please remind your chil-dren to wash their hands frequent-ly, as this is the best way to keep all of us healthy this winter.

one to please look at your children’s schedule and make sure they bring sneakers (rubber sole and a way to tight-en the shoe, no slip ons or boots!) on their scheduled P.E. day. The students go outside almost every day for recess so it’s a good idea to send them in athletic shoes every day. I would also like to encourage everyone to get some exer-cise and promote a healthy lifestyle to our children.

P. E. News The start of a new school year is always exciting for both teachers and students. Much like last year the focus is on mak-ing the most of the time we have to-gether and keeping the students as physically active as possible. The school year will consist of many differ-ent units. The units that will be cov-ered are rock climbing, fitness testing, chasing and fleeing, lifelong fitness goals and hand eye coordination to name a few. I would encourage every-

Counselor’s Corner Welcome back to another great school year! If your child ever gets off to a rough start in the morning and you feel it might impact their learning, feel free to contact us. We are here to help your child be successful at school.

We are still looking for mentors to volunteer once a week to be paired with a child to read, practice spelling words or just play a game. There are many children that could use a positive role model in their lives. If you are interested in help-ing make a difference please contact Mrs. Parker at 335-5261.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed on Saturday, November 5th.

1st Grade News It has been a very busy beginning of the year! At school we have been reading lots and lots of sto-ries. Some characters we have come to know are David, Chrysan-themum, and the three little das-sies. The students have been thinking and talking about the key details in stories and using them to retell these stories. Parents can support growth in reading by ask-ing your children questions about the stories you read together. Lis-tening to first graders learning to read is very exciting! Our children have also been work-ing with addition and subtraction and are learning many new strate-gies to solve problems. Using part-part-whole models, ten frames and number lines, and mental math strategies like counting up help us become expert problem solvers.

Be sure to ask your child how they figured out some of the problems in their math work. Some of these strategies may be new to you, but your child can teach you what they have learned and that will help them think about and learn more from their work too! Our budding scientists have been observing and describing the weather since school began. They have created wind speed flags, thermometer models, rain gauges, and cloud charts. These tools make a great weather watcher tool-kit! We are now beginning our next unit about wind. This is our engineering challenging when stu-dents are challenged to design creations that use the wind. For a special treat on October 28th, we visited Loblolly Acres for pumpkin picking fun. Students

met many barnyard animals, went on a hayride into the forest, lis-tened to some spooky stories, and slid down a slippery slide. We had a fantastic fall day. The first grade teachers would like to thank the parents for sending in supplies, being super chaperones, and providing your help and sup-port at this busy time of year. We are truly enjoying this fun group of first graders!
