Religious Freedom Week
June 22nd - June29th
People of faith are committed to serving others in God’s love in healthcare, child welfare, migration and refugee resettlement, education, and more. Religious freedom pro-tects the space in which we can con-tinue to serve. Religious Freedom Week begins June 22nd, the Feast of Sts. Thomas More & John Fisher. Join Catholics across the country to pray and act for the freedom to serve faithfully and with integrity.
June 22nd
Pray: Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, for the protection of religious freedom in America and around the world.
Reflect: On this feast of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, we remem-ber these saints who were martyred in 1535 for standing up for the sanc-tity of marriage and the freedom of the Church in opposition to Eng-land's King Henry VIII. In our coun-try today, the Church faces challeng-es to her freedom to serve in healthcare, child welfare services, and education. While we seek to be faithful to Christ by serving our neighbors, ignoring conscience can-not be the condition placed on peo-ple of faith for service in the public square. Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher show us what faithful service looks like. They loved and served their country. Yet they rightly recognized that they were being forced to choose between the Church and the king. They were faithful to the Church. May their ex-ample continue to illuminate the path for us, as we seek to faithfully serve our Church and country.
Act: What do conscience and religious freedom mean to you?
June 23rd
Pray: May chil-dren waiting to be placed in a loving home, and the caregiv-ers who selfless-ly serve those children; find strength & sup-port from the Church.
Reflect: The opioid crisis is put-ting a strain on the foster care sys-tem. Yet while more children are waiting to be placed in families, faith-based child welfare providers are being targeted for closures because of their religious convictions. Catho-lic Charities in Illinois provided these services. They excelled at recruiting families to serve as foster parents because they could go directly into churches and invite Catholics to serve in this way. The number of children in need is going up. The number of families willing to take the children into their homes is going down. And in places like Illinois, Massachusetts, California, and D.C., the service providers who have a track record of excellence in recruit-ing and assisting foster families are being shut down. Intolerance for reli-gious views has real consequences, and in this case, it is vulnerable chil-dren who have suffered. Let's pray and act to keep kids first.
Act: The federal Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act (H.R. 1881 / S. 811) would protect the religious liberty of child welfare service pro-viders, including adoption and foster care agencies. Similar legislation has been introduced and passed in several states. Contact your U.S. senators and representatives and ask them to cosponsor the federal Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act. Check out the USCCB Action Alert Center. and your state Catho-lic conference or diocesan website for legislative updates!
June 24th
Pray: May the Holy Spirit give us the courage to bear witness to the truth of the gospel, even in the face of social and legal pressure.
Reflect: All baptized Chris-tians are called to share the joy of the gospel with others. When most of our co-workers, neighbors, and even family mem-bers don’t share our faith and per-haps do not practice any faith at all, we might be timid or afraid to talk about our faith. But in a culture filled with so much junk, people are hun-gry for solid food. When we encoun-ter Jesus Christ, we come to know the bread of life, the truth in which the restless hearts of our age can rest. We love our neighbors by helping them to encounter Jesus.
Act: As Pope Francis teaches, "The Holy Spirit also grants the courage to proclaim the newness of the Gos-pel with boldness (parrhesía) in eve-ry time and place, even when it meets with opposition" (Evangelii gaudium, 259). Let's take this week to exercise our freedom by sharing our faith in Jesus Christ or to talk about religious freedom with others. Try it today!

Parishes grow only when people are welcomed, heard, pope says By Cindy Wooden
Catholic News Service
ROME (CNS) -- After
months of study and discus-
sion, the parishes of the Di-
ocese of Rome have recog-
nized "a general and healthy
exhaustion" with doing the
same things over and over,
touching the lives of fewer
and fewer people as time
goes on, Pope Francis said.
Changing the way parishes
-- and their priests and in-
volved laity -- operate will
not be easy, the pope said,
but members of the diocese
must set out to follow the
Lord more closely, deal with
the reality in their neighbor-
hoods and learn how to
show everyone living within
the parish boundaries that
they are recognized and
loved.
Pope Francis addressed
some 1,700 diocesan lead-
ers, both clergy and laity,
May 14 at the Basilica of St.
John Lateran, the cathedral
of the diocese of Rome.
In the process of identify-
ing the "spiritual illnesses" of
the diocese, the pope said,
the priests and parish lead-
ers made it clear that they
are tired of being content
with what they have been
doing for years.
A renewed outreach, the
pope said, must begin by
"learning to discern where
God already is present in
very ordinary forms of holi-
ness and communion with
him."
There are people in the
parishes, he said, who
might not know their cate-
chism, but they see the
basic interactions in their
lives through a lens of faith
and hope.
Calling for a "revolution of
tenderness" in parishes and
the diocese, Pope Francis
said that while "guiding a
Christian community is the
specific task of the ordained
minister- the pastor-pastoral
care is based in baptism
and blossoms from brother-
hood and is not the task on-
ly of the pastor and priests,
but of all the baptized."
The pope's speech marked
his formal reception of a di-
ocesan report on "spiritual
illnesses" afflicting the city.
Through a process that be-
gan in Lent, parishes identi-
fied the main challenges as
"the economy of exclusion,
selfish laziness, comfortable
individualism, wars among
us, sterile pessimism and
spiritual worldliness," ac-
cording to a statement from
the diocese.
The priest who summa-
rized the findings at the
evening meeting told the
pope that a lack of educa-
tion in the faith was identi-
fied by many of the groups;
that lack was seen regard-
ing basic church teachings
but also regarding how the
Gospel and its values could
be brought to bear on mod-
ern problems.
Pope Francis told them the
process of identifying the
problems had two benefits:
a recognition of "the truth
about our condition as being
in need, sick," but, at the
same time, a recognition
that even if people have
failed, God is still present
and is calling his people to
come together and to move
forward.
"Our parishes," he said,
"must be capable of gener-
ating a people, that is, of
offering and creating rela-
tionships where people feel
that they are known, recog-
nized, welcomed, listened
to, loved -- in other words,
not anonymous parts of a
whole."
To move forward, he said,
Catholic communities must
look at "the slaveries -the
illnesses-that have ended
up making us sterile."
Often, he said, parishes
are slaves to doing things
the ways they always have
been done and to investing
time and energy in projects
and programs that no longer
meet the needs of the
people.
"We must listen without
fear to the thirst for God and
to the cry that rises from the
people of Rome, asking our-
selves how that cry express-
es the need for salvation, for
God," he said. "How many
of the things that emerged
from your studies express
that cry, the invocation that
God show himself and help
us escape the impression
that our life is useless and
almost robbed by the frenzy
of things that must be done
and by time that keeps slip-
ping through our hands?”
Too often, he said, evan-
gelization also is stifled by
“faith Understood only as
things to do and not as a
liberation that renews us at
every step.”
