IntroductionThe Association of Irish Choirs (AOIC) is delighted to launch this event guide for 2015. AOIC has been working on ways to promote choral singing and create greater possibilities for collaboration between choirs from all over. There are so many talented and vibrant choral groups and individuals working in Ireland. We can so often, as a community of singers and choirs, become focused on our next concert, event or competition. Sometimes this means missing out on what else might be going on and the possibilities for collaboration that may be presented. In a new initiative, AOIC is setting out regional meetings for AOIC member representatives in the coming months and is looking to hear the views of choirs on choral activity in Ireland. In undertaking these meetings the AOIC hopes to gain a greater understanding of singers and conductors needs and be able to plan in response to this.

The meetings will take place initially as follows: Thursday, 19th March at 6.30pm (Dublin), Thursday 26th March at 6.30pm (Cork), Thursday 23rd April at 6.30pm (Galway), Tuesday 28th April at 6.30pm (Limerick), Thursday 7th May at 6.30pm (Athlone), and Thursday 14th May at 6.30pm (Donegal). Further meetings will be arranged based on demand and with geographic considerations in mind. These meetings will be an opportunity to hear about future AOIC plans and also to start the process of forming regional AOIC committees.

It is a great pleasure to set out some of our member events in this guide and we hope that you will be enthused to support one another through attending some of these. Similarly, we hope you will eagerly engage with AOIC via our website and our diary listings as well as with our newer services. There are now a range of online tutorial videos and factsheets available to members in the ‘Member’s Area’ of the website. We will also see the introduction of online webinars for members so that they can be involved from wherever they may be. All that you need is to register for the webinar and have a computer with internet connection. Conductors can engage with AOIC by taking part in our internationally esteemed Choral Conducting Summer School under the dynamic leadership of Artistic Director, Bernie Sherlock. This will run at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance from the 9th – 14th August 2015. AOIC is also continuing to engage with the work of conductors of junior and youth choirs this year through our on-going partnership with Music Generation.

The Irish Youth Choir goes from strength to strength and, after 32 years, 2014 saw the devel-opment of the first national training choir for 14-17 year olds, the Irish Youth Training Choir (IYTC). IYTC will continue this year at the University of Limerick (25th – 28th June) and is a development ground for the work of the main Irish Youth Choir for 18 – 28 year olds. The Irish Youth Chamber Choir has just released an exceptional debut EP recording titled Rise up my love, now on sale at www.ergodos.ie.

AOIC strives to campaign on behalf of choirs, choral music educators and conductors in Ireland. We invite all to engage with AOIC through meetings and events during 2015 to help build on al-ready thriving choral activity in Ireland. AOIC wishes the very best to all of our members in 2015. We are always here for queries or comments at [email protected] or by phone at 061 234823 and look forward to hearing from you.

Association of Irish ChoirsEnhancing life through choral musicFounded in 1980, the Association of Irish Choirs (AOIC) supports and promotes excellence in choral music in Ireland. This is accomplished through a range of programmes and activities designed to respond to the needs of our members, the wider choral community and the public. AOIC also provides information and advice to choirs, singers, conductors and music educators.

Our activities include• Developing and promoting choral music in Ireland• Offering mentoring and master class opportunities to conductors • Running the Annual International Choral Conducting Summer School• Giving training and supports to primary and secondary school teachers• Organising singing days and workshops for schools and choirs nationally• Managing a library lending scheme of 14,000 pieces of Irish and other music• Providing information and advice to choirs• Managing the Irish Youth Choir , Irish Youth Training Choir and Irish Youth

Chamber Choir

For a nominal annual fee members can take advantage of reduced rates for all AOIC courses (including the Annual International Choral Conducting Summer School), borrow from our extensive sheet music library which can be accessed online and be part of an organisation dedicated to their choral and musical requirements!

governance• Downloadable fact sheets and guidelines on AOIC site• Access to choral risers for a nominal fee• Discounts in many sheet music shops• Special membership discounts with Thornton Pianos • A selection of AOIC publications• Access to videos by a variety of choral practitioners on www.aoic.ie members area

Association of Irish Choirs (AOIC) is committed to making sure that members of the Association are engaged with the organisation as well as with other choirs in their localities. Recently we have asked our members to nominate a representative to stay in contact with the Association for future services and training possibilities and to help the AOIC to better connect with our membership through the provision of further feedback opportunities for our members. AOIC would like to gain a greater understanding of member needs through this process.

On more specific duties, AOIC sees the creation of provincial committees in its future development as the choral sector in Ireland can become fragmented with choirs working understandably towards their own concerts and events and so we are hoping through this initiative to connect choirs to a greater degree with each other and with AOIC.

Feel free to contact AOIC for further information on membership or nominating a choir representative on 061 234 823 or [email protected].

Over the IYC annual summer course singers have the opportunity to audition for the Irish Youth Chamber Choir. Those selected from these auditions continue to perform some of the most incredible choral music from around the world to a standard of excellence throughout the year.

They have performed with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Choir Ireland, Elbow at Electric Picnic, and at the BBC Proms with the National Youth Choir and National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

National Choral Singing Week National Choral Singing Week in association with Mental Health Ireland will take place from 4th to 10th October 2015.

Choral events will be organised all over the country by choirs, schools and other groups to mark World Mental Health Week and to highlight the fact that choral singing is good for your mental health!

Group singing has been scientifically proven to lower stress, relieve anxiety, and elevate endorphins. The release of these endorphins can leave you feeling completely rejuvenated.

Please get involved by sending AOIC your events - it can be a rehearsal, a performance or a coffee morning with singing as part of it! Please get in contact with us if you’d like your event added (email: [email protected]).
