Indus- tries like iron smelting and cotton spinning were sw€pt along early by the 'Revolution', but its inlluences on others took longer and came about in diflerenl wavs. The production of lirne was one aclivity slow to change, remaining for most ol the eighteenth and n neteenth cen- turies mainly a small'scale business, with little technical innovation. However, a process indus, trialisation did occur Recent work at one imporlant hme producrng s,te In lhe Pennines provides a microcosm ol developments which atlected the industry in the late nineteenth and earv twentielh centuries. In May and June 1989 the sile ol the Langclifte Umeslone Ouarry and kilns, near Settle in North Yorkshire, was the subiect of an archaeo- logical suNey in advance of pro@sds to develop the site as a tourist attraction. The survey was carried out by the Lancaster University Archaeological Unil on behalf of the Ribblesdale Trust, according to a briel outlined by Robert White of the Yorkshire Dales Nallonal Park. The aims of the survey were to provide a detailed inventory and survey ol remains on the site, and lo construct a preliminary account ol its development using physical, documentary and oral evidence. lhe use of lime grew rapidly during the Induskial Revolulion. 11 was lhe major ingre- dient of mortar lor building, il was used widely as a lenilizer, and it had a crucial role as a flux in iron production. Olher uses were in tanntng. bleaching, disinfeclion, glass manulaclure and paper making. Fhere is linb published work to establish the hislorical developmenl ol trme burning, either in the Pennines or nationally. However Arthu Raistrick, in Old Yorkshire Dales, suggested that the lime industry of the region rellected general trends For the medie, val period he identified the existence of temporary kilns lor building, and scattered and intermittently op€rated kilns lor agricultural use lmprovements in agriculture in lhe sixteenth to eighleenth cenluries led to expansion ot the lime industry However, Raistrick suggested that the scallered paltern of lime burning in the Dales remained much lhe same into the nineteenth century. wrth the imoortant addttion of clusters ot 'selling' kilns where limestone was adjacent to coal supplies In the Senle area. there seems lo have been a well establashed lime industry by the mid nrneleenlh century, producing lime mainly lor local consumption. But Revolutionary' changes came as an rmmedrale consequence oi the construction ol the Seltle and Carlisle Railway, whrch connected lhe area with large external markets. The Langcliffe quarries and works, three miles north of Settle next lo the newly constructed southern section of the ra lway (SD 824 663) we'e one prod"ct of l1e expansro'r The Langcllffe compex cons sted oi two neigh- bouring but independent limeworks, both ot whrcl^ began i. '372-3. tra,lsponr.rg a ge quantrties of qlcklme lo Bradiord and Shef- lield on the new railway The larger of the two was the Craven Lime Company, lormed by the long'standing partnership ol John Clark and Michael Wilson, lhe smaller was lhe company of Thomas Murgalroyd. Murgatroyd buill a traditionally designed, if massively scaled, set ot three draw krlns lor burning lhe lime. However the Craven Company decrded on an even more rassive Hotfman type kiln which today is a Scheduled Ancient Monumenl The kilns survive substan- tially intact together with the base ol a later, verlical sleel hiln and assocraled quaflres. transporl systems and ancillary buildings. The Murgatroyd works had closed by 1907 but the Craven works were in production until 1939. Alter the war the site passed throLrgh several ownerships belore becoming a rubbish dump.
